So Best Buy has the LE version of Lawrence of Arabia on sale for $10 this week. I've wanted to see this movie for a long time now, and I was just going to hold off for a BR release, but god knows when the hell that's going to happen, so I'm thinking about just getting the DVD, which will probably be better packaged than the BR anyway...

faceoff review is up (UK version), should please fans but has zero extras.
Bear in mind that the UK version is cut, so you might want to hold out for the Paramount US release. It removes all the footage of John Travolta's character (playing Nic Cage's character...my head hurts) playing with the butterfly knife because the ratings body in the UK is sensitive about knife violence. I posted this in the comments to the review and someone said that there's a German version which is in English and uncut if you want to import.

Some say that they are showing the movies in the new 120Hz TVs as the reason why they look different, but I also believe that the clips showing are doctored, they look like live footage and not real movie clips.

It wasn't a 120Hz since they were selling it for 2,000. I can understand if that's what it will look like on 120Hz TVs, but those videos are doctored in some form.

I purchased my 46in 71 series samsung with 120Hz for $2000. The 40 in version is selling for well under.

The videos aren't doctored. The effect with the 3D and video look is the motion processing in certain 120Hz sets (AMP in Samsungs called something else in Sonys). The sets interpolate and insert additional frames into the 24fps original. Despite some pretty serious artifacts with certain sources and higher levels, the processing is pretty amazing. Fantastic for 30fps games as well.

9 mil. Blu Discs Sold To Date; 3 million Already This Year

Blu-ray Disc sales continue to pick up steam, with total U.S. sales since inception (about a year-and-a-half-ago) hitting 9 million units through March 16, according to HMR research.
In just 11 weeks this year, BD unit sales have hit 3 million units, seemingly putting the format on pace to easily hit at least 15 million units for 2008.
After averaging weekly sales ranging from 200,000 - 300,000 the past two months or so, sales spiked up to 319,000 units, driven by Miramax's release of "No Country For Old Men."

That's... not really very impressive. Nice growth vs. prior performance and all, but it's still just a tiny speck in the sales radar compared to DVD.
I guess we shouldnt care until 5 years from now when there starts to be some parity between the two formats? Or you could just take it for what it is, evidence that blu-ray is slowly gaining ground, much like DVD slowly gained ground on VHS.

??? :lol

It's clearly gaining traction despite the nay-sayers.

Eh, when DVD released its first major summer blockbuster (the Matrix) day-and-date with the VHS release, it sold a million copies in about a week. Blu-ray's had several releases of huge box office hits (Pirates 3, Spider-Man 3, Ratatouille) day-and-date with the DVDs, and those haven't come anywhere close. The transition looks to be much slower.

Ok and DVD came out what 97? 98? the Matrix came out in theaters in 1999 and was on DVD two whole years after dvd players came out. Not to mention it didnt have to fight against another format.
And it looks to be much slower because you dont remember DVD and you havent looked at the data stating that blu-ray is progressing faster than DVD did at the same points in their lives.

:lol I love people with utterly no sense of history. That's outpacing DVD at a similar point in its life. And obviously at that point in DVD's life, it was 'a tiny speck in sales' compared to VHS.

DivX? I know the sales of that were never any real challenger to DVD, but it did have some heavyweight proponents that were very publicly withholding DVD releases in hopes DivX would succeed. Disney, Spielberg, and Lucas all fell under this category, IIRC. Paramount straggled behind in starting up their DVD support, too.

I guess it's more that doesn't seem to be progressing as smoothly keeping in mind the much greater studio support it has. DVD in the beginning pretty much just had WB, Universal, and... that one company that published a handful of titles for other studios... Paradigm?

Aside from missing Paramount for a few months, all Blu's had as a real major holdout is Uni.

What evidence do you have that Spielberg and Lucas wanted to support Divx? WTF

I dunno, I just heard that thrown around a few times in the video store I worked at around that time. May have been hearsay and conjecture, but the point remains that it was lent credibility because they were slow to finally jump on the DVD bandwagon.

Has any solid info been released yet about The Longest Day on Blu-ray? I'm hoping it gets at least as good a treatment as Patton because it's one of my all-time favorite classic old-school war films.

I just need announcement of Kelly's Heroes and Where Eagles Dare on Blu-ray soon too, and I'll be a very happy boy.

Just got The Matador, Harsh Times and Feast in yesterday for 8.97 each. I watched Feast last night, because I didn't think the missus would be interested. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone... and that is coming from someone coming in with low expectations. The image quality is very iffy, and script is terrible (even for a parody of horror films).

Planning to watch Matador and Harsh Times sometime next week, but from what I could see of Matador, it looks excellent and funny as hell.

Anyone want to trade for my copy of Feast? (lol)

I also got Feast today along with the Matador and Clerks II today in the mail. I only bought Feast becasue it got a pretty good review from HDD, and becasue it was only $9... Funny, out of all the 3 movies Feast is the only one with a HD audio track, did it at least sound good?

Unfortunately, I was watching it late at night, while everyone was asleep. So really didn't crank the audio. From what I could tell the audio is good and does provide a few jump moments. Perhaps the move will grow on me. I think it's something you should watch in a big group, as the gross out moments would then be very funny and outrageous, rather than just disgusting. I love splatstick comedies like Dead Alive and Evil Dead, but couldn't get into this one.

Only a matter of time before we can buy Star Wars on Blu Ray.

I'd rather have the extended editions of Lord of the rings trilogy, which will probably come sooner to blu-ray than star wars.

Any Gaffers had a chance to watch Bonnie And Clyde BR yet?

I've never even seen the film, but I'm considering giving it a blind buy.

I love that flick, would definitely like it on BD.
Its not on BD.
I actually watched the show project greenlight or whatever it is? Was interested in seeing how the movie came out since the director was so lazy(or at least portrayed as such on TV).

Just finished watching Shoot Em' Up. There aren't enough :|s in the world to describe how retarded this movie is. Why did I buy it...

I thought the same and then someone here readjusted my perspective with one word: satire.

Watched it a second time with my girlfriend and found some appreciation for it when I didn't take it so seriously.

Besides, Monica Bellucci in HD = OM NOM NOM

Yep, HD DVD, that's why it was only $8.97.

Actually, I thought the direction wasn't as nearly lazy as the writing.

it looks like film - which is amazing really. it even looks better than most of the prints i've seen of in school/theaters. the BD meat heads will hate the transfer i guess and the mono sound.

I would have hit the def chick... but yeah, I didn't care for the movie. Luckily I got it for free from Toshiba. :)

Want to do a trade for it or are you willing to sell it? I really liked that movie but never got around to buying it. Do you have a BD player yet?

Cool, thanks. The mono track doesn't bother me much, since I don't have much of a sound system right now anyways.

Everything I've read about the video has been pretty positive, and the general reviews of the movie itself are really high, so it looks like I'll be picking this up. I'm curious to see how the "book" case looks too.

I hate those effects. They make movies stop looking like movies, and more like sitcoms. Its just unreal. Don't interpolate anything. Just play the original movie back at a nice multiple of the original framerate to avoid judder or flicker, thank you.

Just got my 4671 in the mail this week and the thing is a MONSTER... Its a great TV and that AMP is great even on the lowest setting. I originally thought that the "Fake 3D Soap Opera" look was just with Blurays, so I was going to buy a PS3 right away, but that effect is on almost everything, if you have the setting on. I am happy with it...

Thanks to everyone who helped me when I had the same question about this earlier in the thread.

Edit for poster above me.... You can turn the setting off if you dont like it...

I couldn't stand the effect on film sources when I first got the TV. Your eyes adjust to it however, and with the processing set to low, the effect becomes subtle enough that all it does is smooth out motion and lend a little 3D pop to the image. People like to demo these sets with the processing set to high which never looks right.

Glad you're enjoying the set Malleymal. Make sure you check out Ratatouille. Sunshine was quite a stunner too.

Pretty obvious what movies HD fans like...

It was a tough battle, but in the end Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment's "Enchanted" narrowly triumphed over the Warner blockbuster "I Am Legend" to nail down the No. 1 spot on the national DVD sales chart for the week ending March 23.
...
"Legend" was the week's top Blu-ray Disc seller, moving four times as many copies as "Enchanted" -- not surprising, given that the next-generation format is still in the early adopter stage, a demographic of mostly young adult men.
Seeing as I Am Legend BD is still #2 on Amazon and still outselling the DVD version there, I'm thinking the BD/DVD ratio may be the closest ever.

Also, IAL is on the way from Netflix for me, so my track record has been pretty damn good lately with them (Enchanted before this).

BB Online has been ridiculously good at sending me newer movies as well. I received I Robot and Zodiac last week and they're sending me Beowulf this week. I remember last year I couldn't get newer movies at all, sometimes until 3-4 months after they came out. I'm guessing both services beefed up their HD stock significantly. The difference this year to last year is just dramatic.

Heh, the sad thing is, even though I didn't see it yet, I have very little doubt Enchanted is a much better film, regardless of what gender or age you are. It's just such a great feel-good movie the likes of which hasn't been seen since maybe Sound of Music. Amazing looking too, I have never seen 2D animation look this good.

Yea I am looking to get all off those animated movies once i pick up that PS3, Do you have any systems hooked up to your tv? Do you change your settings any??

Movie availability on Netflix has taken a dive for me recently. I've got BD *and* DVD stuff listed as very long wait that just doesn't seem like it should still be that popular. Stargate: Ark of Truth on DVD is very long wait, really?

And LOL at Netflix site redesign popping up a few days after largely unexplained outage...guess we know what the reason for that is now.
