Two questions:

1. What's the current status on a potential Lost in Translation BR? Announced? Given a Release Date? Still not announced?

2. What's the deal with Pixar releases? So far we've got the shorts, Cars, and Ratatouille on BR- (with Wall-E presumably coming later this year) when will the rest hit?

Finding Nemo was expected to be released this fall, but from what I understand, it was pushed back to spring 2009 for some unknown reason. Though this is upsetting, it has been rumored that another Pixar catalog title will be released this fall right beside the DVD/ Blu-ray release of Wall-E. I'm expecting The Incredibles, but it could the Monsters Inc since its also an Andrew Stanton film and it hasn't seen a release since its original in 2002.

I would expect the Toy Story's to arrive in either 2009 or 2010. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will be re-released in 3-D in 2009 and 2010, with Toy Story 3 following soon after on June 18, 2010. Most likely a Toy Story Trilogy set. Hannah Montana is being released this August with a 3D viewing mode, so I think we can expect the same treatment from the Toy Story movies as well after their theatrical run.

I don't know about the rest... they are likely resting in the "Disney Vault." If so, then its like a 5 to 10 year wait between re-issues.

they don't air the original anymore I believe. Nor is it on DVD as far as I can tell. It was an extra on the first run of the dvd release and removed then after.

Has anyone seen Protege on BD ?
Is the movie any good and is the video quality good ?
I've seen Protoge in standard definition, but the Hong Kong DVD's image quality was pretty freaking high as is (thanks Netflix). I can't imagine the Blu-Ray not looking good.

The movie itself is pretty good. Its easily the best performance I've yet seen of Andy Lau, and the film gets really interesting when it gets down into the nuts and bolts of the heroin trade.

*weeps* Such a great place to order import HD movies from...

"All good things must come to an end and that time is near for Xploited Cinema! It has been years since we started selling DVDs to the best customers around the world, but we've made a decision to move on. Xploited Cinema will still be around, but we will stop carrying new products and stop stocking catalog titles.

It was a tough decision since through the years everyone here has given 110% of themselves, but it's time to slow down, rest and shift gears to new endeavors. Are we "going out of business"? Not necessarily since we will continue to ship orders in the same efficient manner we always have, but in the short term leading into the long term we will be carrying less new releases and not re-ordering older catalog titles.

Mid July will be the time when you will be noticing no new titles added to the website and older titles taken off the website once we sell out. All current pre-orders will be processed and shipped as normal. Over time you will notice older titles disappearing from the website. We recommend getting what you want now since all titles will not be re-ordered as we run low in stock or sell out.

I would like to thank all of the customers that have stuck around with us since the early 2000s. For years I have corresponded with many of you via emails and have met many of you face to face at conventions. I can wholeheartedly say that we have the best and most loyal customers a business could ever imagine.

As i mentioned before this hasn't been an easy decision since I've given as much as i could to make Xploited Cinema a successful DVD retailing website, but I just can't keep doing this for the rest of my life. We will be around in some capacity for who knows how long dealing with the day in day out activities we have always been doing. The only main change noticed will be the elimination of stocking new releases and older catalog titles. Orders will be processed in the same timely manner as in the past and order and item related questions will be answered promptly.

From the bottom of my heart I would once again like to thank everyone who has been an Xploited Cinema customer through the years!

20th anniversary edition

An extended version of the film released on March 22, 2002, included altered special effects. Certain shots of E.T. had bothered Spielberg since 1982, as he did not have enough time to make the animatronics fully work. Computer-generated imagery (CGI) was used to modify several shots, including ones of E.T. running in the opening sequence. Spielberg also used CGI to add elements to the spaceship. Scenes shot for but not part of the original version played.[63] The following shots were included for the first time: E.T. taking a bath, and Gertie telling Mary that Elliott went to the forest. Spielberg did not add Harrison Ford's scene, feeling that would reshape the film too drastically. Having become a father, Spielberg was more sensitive about the scene where gun-wielding federal agents threaten Elliott and his escaping friends; he digitally replaced the guns with walkie-talkies.[6]

At the premiere, John Williams conducted a live performance of the score while the film release grossed $35 million domestically, and brought the film's total worldwide gross to $792 million since 1982.[38] The 20th Anniversary edition was released on a two-disc DVD on December 9, 2002, and was also packaged in a collector's edition with the original version.[64] The changes to the film, in particular the switch from shotguns to walkie-talkies, were criticized as political correctness. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wondered, "Remember those guns the feds carried? Thanks to the miracle of digital, they're now brandishing walkie-talkies.... Is this what two decades have done to free speech?"[65] Chris Hewitt of Empire wrote, "[T]he changes are surprisingly low-key...while ILM's CGI E.T. is used sparingly as a complement to Carlo Rambaldi's extraordinary puppet."[66] South Park parodied many of the changes in the 2002 episode "Free Hat".[67]

How is that going to work? (unless they opt for the ridiculous red/blue 3D glasses system)

Ironically Spielberg is far more adamant about the old version of ET not being available than Lucas is with the old Star Wars versions. :lol
From what I remember, changes to E.T are minor though, and do not affect the movie in any real way. Whereas, Lucas' edits to the original SW trilogy ranged from just puzzling to outright disrespectful, like replacing Sebastian Shaw at the end of RotJ with Hayden Christensen.

oh gawd, two more days until BB in hi-def. Curious if anyone is getting the standard over the special edition?

Do all of them come with the coupon? In Canada too?

I'm getting the standard edition. I like to watch extra's but I'm not a fan of most collectibles. Just ordered from Amazon. Thanks for the heads up on that price!

I think I'm going to watch Batman Begins on HDDVD several times before Dark Knight.

And I allready by my 11:40 PM tickets so I get to see it 20 minutes earlier than any of you! (unless you live on the East coast :( )

Chronicles of Riddick

Saw this awhile back on dvd - didn't really think much of it - just finished watching this on HD-dvd and colour me impressed. There's a subtletly and classiness to the plot that I didn't get the first go. I might possibly think this is better than the first movie. The CGI, plot, pacing and execution were all superb. The whole thing looked great on HD and I really appreciated Jack/Kiera and Riddicks relationship in this. Tandie Newton was stunning. The ending is still pretty dark and awesome. Watching this, I kept thinking, what happened to Vin Diesel's career? He's great.

Bluray ain't going anywhere until the public can get a good player for under $200 and a good > 30" HDTV for under $600. They need to have an upgradable, good quality player at $150, with discs at $20.

This $400 player/$35 disc crap is limiting adoption. This is basic economics.

It's strange that you hit the nail on the head, and didn't even know it.

Players can be had at Wal-Mart for $300 to $350. And movies at $15-$29.99.

That is not the reason Blu-Ray isn't "taking off". DVD's were at the SAME PRICES when they started to sky rocket in sales.

The problem is the entry price of an HDTV. More specifically, a large HDTV. Sure, folks can buy 27-36" HDTV's for about $700, but you won't notice the difference (most consumers at least) between a DVD and Blu-Ray disc, especially since most of those sets are bottom of the barrel.

When a consumer can buy a 50" for $1,000, adoption may begin to raise, but until HDTV sets come down in price, adoption is going to continue to be stagnant.

It has nothing to do with the death of HD-DVD, the price of players, or the price of movies.

Fuck, I would have thought the folks buying $60 games, $250 Gamecubes would be 'clue' enough to let you know that the price of players / movies isn't the issue. It's the TV sets required to watch them in 'true form'.

Received my copy of Black Narcissus from Amazon UK over the weekend and am very happy with the disc. The extras are unfortunately in PAL SD and thus unplayable on a region-A player, but there's only a 20-odd minute featurette and a trailer, so it isn't a huge loss. The image, of course, was the entire reason I wanted this one and it definitely isn't a disappointment. Lightyears beyond the embarassing R1 Criterion (bleah, lawls and ugh) and a nice step up from my older R2 remaster and the expensive French set, there's a lovely three-dimensional appearance to most of the film, excellent facial and architectural detail, and the matte painted backdrops are gorgeous without ever looking "fake" like I feared they might. No noticable DNR, either, which is a relief. Viva la film grain! This is how a 60-year old movie should be seen and I'll happily upgrade when more like this come along.

The quality obviously loses something being photographed as opposed to a direct capture (which you can see in their full-resolution glory here, here and here) but it's a truly beautiful transfer and really does the whole production justice. Bring on the Red Shoes now!

I thought the gift set had the same Blu-Ray disc with the same extras? Only difference was the collector box, postcards, lithowhatever and movie ticket.

Thats why i'm passing on it. Not paying double for the same movie and some postcards Best Buy was handing out for free with the original movie. I mean for cripes sake Warner Bros., you give the DVD box set a batman usb drive and not the BR gift set?? What the hell?

It does come with the same extras. I was just saying that if there were more features I would consider it, but I'm with you on the postcard stuff; I don't care.

Have you compared HDTV adoption to Blu Ray adoption rates to see if your theory holds any weight? You're so rudely dismissive of my theory, so I assume you have some data to back up yours.

Ya know I saw the posts on the last few pages of some people that to be honest come off as bitter(if they are or arent i dont care), talking about how blu fans claimed blu-ray would take off and sky rocket they second hd dvd folded.

I was thinking of responding, but then i remembered i dont care. If you want to argue about that shit take it to a new thread.
This thread is for high def movies and sometimes Q&A on players and receivers/speakers.

And no im not trying to single anyone out. Whether you made the comments or started responding to them, take it to another thread.

For those of you who still have HD DVD (I also have BR), Future Shop has Planet Earth for $24.99! I picked it up yesterday, excellent deal.

This reminds me of the "with all due respect" stuff in Talladega Nights. You JUST SAID that you think those folks come off as bitter (and I know you included me in that). Trying to then frame the conversation away from that after making that comment is disingenuous. I can't let that fly. And I even agree that this isn't the thread for it. Which is why I typed the original post that started the replies last THURSDAY and hadn't addressed the subject again until today, despite opportunities to do so. The fact that you typed your reply after I responded like four days later also makes your bias obvious. I just wanted to point those out. And the fact is that I'm not bitter for pointing out what I did. This isn't consoles, and my track record in this thread is crystal clear.

That said, and with all due respect (:lol ), I agree that we should move on from that topic since there is nothing to really discuss. Until the next BD sales article comes up. Because I tend to think that discussing BD format sales is still somewhat relevant, just not worth it if it devolves into what the previous thread was.

Your right I did type it right after your response, because after i read what you wrote i went back and saw what the con had wrote. I didnt read the thread much over the 4th, notice i dont have a single post in here since july 3rd till today. If you feel singled out, fine. If you dont like being called bitter fine, but to bring it up like the way you and others did kind of like "haha nothing has happened" to seem as though you and others are bitter. I'm just calling it like i see it.
I dont care if your bitter or not, just fuckin' take it to another thread. >.<

Im also refraining from responded to a certain someones post about how batman begins has the same transfer on hd dvd and blu-ray. We all know why he did it, thankfully no one has bothered responding.

I didn't even understand that. I don't remember anybody saying (or caring) about a new transfer, fraankly.

It's quite early to talk about Blu-Ray sales jumps when there hasn't been a holiday and the economy is in the dumps, by the way. Let's see how all those predictions for the year's numbers go.

edit:

Nevermind, let's move on. I have Persepolis and Into the Wild from BB. I'll give impressions once I see them. And let it be noted that it was this GAF thread that pushed me to get Persepolis, cause I'd never even heard of it, so I am going to hold GAF board members personally responsible if my wife and I hate it!!! :lol

Word. I'll be behind you with the pitchfork and torch in hand if it disappoints.

Got Independence day today 'cause it was only 20 bucks from FOX's normal overpriced prices.
Also batman begins special edition is in the mail, cant wait. Have never seen it.

Between having the PS3 for only 2 weeks now and all the Dark Knight hype, I cannot friggin' wait to pick up Batman Begins tomorrow. Oh it will be a glorious day indeed!

That was a decent movie (a little stupid in parts though. Furyia? really?) but otherwise a decent story, especially the bad guy. It's too bad I always see the one actor as "that horse guy from LotR" because otherwise he sold me on the part.

comments like that in gaming would be fightin' words, and I'm not even sure they aren't here.

I also picked up Persepolis last week. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet but I might tonight.

Are you talking about me there, pal? Please, enlighten me on my motives. I own the X-Box 360 HD DVD player, and a PS3 for BDs, and I own about the same amount of films for each format, and pretty much find them to be of equal calibre, except Bluray gets the edge for obviously winning the format war.

So please dont try and paint me as a troll of either format, when its the farthest from what I am. I bought both players for the MOVIES, not because I gave a shit about what format "won". The simple fact is that it only made sense that WB would use the exact same encode, as the existing one is fine, and less than 2 years old. As such, it was easy for me to predict thats exactly what they would do.

No i wasnt talking about you, dont get your knickers in a wad.

Mana brought it up one post before you, doing nothing but bolding the section about the transfer.

yeah, like the Spider-Man 3 one offered before that movie was released. Just a preview with trailers. Usual BS, you know? At any rate, it's a free case in the end. Now if only I could find some of the cases WB/Fox uses to replace some cracked ones.

HDNet Movies' airing of their Hitchcock marathon the other week was AMAZING. Caught Rear Window, Vertigo, and Psycho. While the grain was still present an it was considerably softer than a modern release, the clarity of detail and saturation of color was still much improved over the DVDs.

Apologies for dredging up an old comment, but Universal announced new 2-disc DVD editions of these three Hitchcock films today (along with a big Touch of Evil set) with no high-def versions to be found. Pretty disappointing considering the HD transfers obviously exist and are in use elsewhere. I suspect it's going to be next year at the earliest before we see any real effort in catalog titles from Universal...
