Apologies for dredging up an old comment, but Universal announced new 2-disc DVD editions of these three Hitchcock films today (along with a big Touch of Evil set) with no high-def versions to be found. Pretty disappointing considering the HD transfers obviously exist and are in use elsewhere. I suspect it's going to be next year at the earliest before we see any real effort in catalog titles from Universal...

Sad news indeed. I always think it's bad news nowadays if a release comes out in DVD only.

Into the Wild....................WOW!!!!

Looked and sounded fantastic. This movie was tailor-made for high def with it's varied cinematography. The Alaskan scenes and the scenes in the desserts and while he was canoing all looked top notch. The movie itself was fine, even if I felt frustrated by the main character's mindset.

That movie annoyed me for that exact reason. The main character was just this annoying dude who thought he was God's gift to mankind, better than all others. The word 'elitist' comes to mind. Worse than a hippie. I didn't even make it to the end. I had no interest in seeing him
die like a fool in some old bus in the middle of nowhere.

WTF? You've got it so wrong.

Shit I should have tried to pick up Hancock for free just to see if I could get it.

I got BB and The Simpsons Movie today at Best Buy. Normally I would never buy BD from there but they were competitively priced.

So how does Batman look?

Also, does anyone know how American Psycho looks? A friend of mine borrowed it (I hadn't opened it yet), and loved it so much that I just gave it to him.

I'm going to be watching that scene tonight, and yeah, he'll deserve it. Or if that's too harsh, at least he invited his fate through his actions (lack of proper preparation). He was a thoroughly confused kid who at the same time thought he had it all figured out. The perfect recipe for disaster. I just wish he had met somebody who could've knocked some sense into him, since it's likely that maturity would've eventually brought him around to normalcy. I thought Vince Vaughn's character could've been that person, if he hadn't gotten arrested. :lol

Is Band of Brothers worth watching if you're not American and don't like the glorification of war and soldiers?

I want to get it when it comes out on Blu-Ray (Simon Pegg is meant to be in an episode) but I'm not sure if it'll be my thing.

It is very well made.

I also think its pretty shitty that you would assume Americans intrinsically like the glorification of war.

I didn't intend to make that connection at all. What I was saying is that as I'm not American there will be elements of the battles I'm not familiar with thus I might be missing things. In regards to the glorification of war, there are lots of war films that often paint it in an all to positive light and I'm hoping for something more even-handed.

No but it glorifies the every man of World War II. And illustrates that while war can turn some of us into the most reprehensible of beasts, it can also transform us into the most wise, most honorable and most humble of men on this earth.

It is an absolutely devastating portrait of war.

might seem like a Shallow question...but how is the Action in Band of Bros? Bloody? good choreography?

does it have a constant story arc?

The action is right on par w/ Pvt. Ryan. There are sequences that exceed it actually. Wait til you see when they get to Belgium ... my god. But to answer your question, it is very bloody and the choreography is right in line with the work in Pvt. Ryan - lots of shaky cam but all told very intelligibly in frame.

Band of Brothers is way better than Saving Private Ryan though.

Sorry, I read it completely wrong.

The movie is good, it isnt a ra ra patriotic sort of movie, its very real and gritty.

Oh, of course. But the aesthetic is borrowed wholesale from Saving Private Ryan. I mean, Spielberg was an exec producer on the series.

It's the most dramatic war piece you will probably see in your lifetime. And if anything it doesn't glorify war, it makes it look horrible and some parts really tug at the heartstrings. Every time I get up to the Battle of the Bulge it really makes me greatful I never had to go something like that. Also I think Simon Pegg is in like 10 minutes of the movie. I think he is a jeep driver or something like that?

And here is an awesome trailer someone made to convince you:

The BFI is releasing Salo on Blu-ray as a 2-disc set in September; confirmed to be region-free and they're smartly putting all of the extras (which are SD and PAL) onto a standard DVD, meaning that they'll be playable in the US on a region-free unit instead of being entirely inaccessable if they were on a Blu-ray. The featurettes and whatnot are mostly different from the upcoming Criterion, and the Coil video is a pretty great addition, so if you're a fan this should be a no-brainer.

Disc 1: Main Feature
Fully Complete & Uncut, telecined from original Italian restoration negatives
1.66:1 (1080p, 24fps) / BD25 / PCM mono
Original Italian language version (with optional English subtitles)
English language version (with optional HoH subtitles)
Original Italian trailer (with optional English subtitles)
Coil - Ostia (the Death of Pasolini) The original 1987 track from Coil's celebrated second album, Horse Rotorvator, with a newly created video accompaniment, shot especially for this release, by Peter Christopherson.

Disc 2: Extra Features - A standard definition PAL DVD with the following content:
On set footage and interviews (1974, 25m) – newly created documentary using full colour footage shot in 1974 by acclaimed film journalist and Pasolini expert Gideon Bachmann.
Whoever Says the Truth Shall Die (1981, 58m) Philo Bregstein's classic documentary on the life and death of Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Fade to Black (2001, 25m) – documentary with Mark Kermode exploring the ongoing relevance and power of Pasolini's controversial masterpiece, with Bernardo Bertolucci and other leading directors.
Ostia (1991, 25m, with optional director commentary track) – Julian Cole's short film about the last days of Pasolini, starring Derek Jarman.

Fully illustrated booklet
Newly commissioned essay by Sam Rohdie (Italian film scholar and author on Pasolini)
Sight & Sound article by Gideon Bachmann incorporating his on-set diary
1979 review of the film by Gilbert Adair
James Ferman letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions
Cast and credits for the film
Pasolini biography by Italian film specialist Geoffrey Nowell-Smith
Photographs of Pasolini at work on set

I picked up my copy of Batman Begins on Bluray from my local moviestop and watched it. Pretty sweet and love the 5 minute preview of Dark Knight.

Cancelled my preorder for Gotham Knight and moved it to a preorder for Justice League Season 1 on Blu-ray instead. Also if anyone is interested they are having a special for a select few movies if you trade in any 4 dvds worth 1.50 or more you get the select movie for free on DVD or a credit of about 18 bucks to the blu ray version. I traded in four old dvds and preordered Iron Man on Blu-ray and got 18 bucks towards it. Only have to pay 6 bucks for it when it comes in. Kind of nice if you have some old walmart bargain bin dvds laying around.

Why can't you? No IMAX theaters in your area?
Well, I suppose I could, but the closest one is I-Drive in Orlando which is a nasty tourist area.

I'm REALLY REALLY REALLY thinking I should go though.

Band of Brothers is fucking awesome, and the fact that it is based on real people unlike Pvt Ryan is a bonus.

I'm not totally sold on the BR yet though. Its going to have to be an amazing transfer. The film was shot with a grainy look, plus the regular DVD also has a DTS soundtrack, which was very good.

Given the people behind it, I'm sure it will be near perfect.

Is it just cost preventing them from putting the extras on a region-free Blu-ray disc? I'm missing why what they're doing is "smart".

Even if the extras are on a region-free BR disc, they'll be inaccessable on a US Blu-ray player or PS3 because they're PAL-sourced. For example: my copy of Black Narcissus BR is region-free but the included featurette is in SD PAL. Selecting it results in a screen blink and then you'll be kicked back to the main menu because region-A players can't process the PAL video.

Putting them onto a DVD allows someone with a region-free DVD player (which anyone with sense should own) to watch them.

So I just got finished reading the No Country for Old Men book and I hate to say it but if you didn't quite get the movie, read the book. There's a lot of stuff in the book that is fleshed out a bit more (and that I totally don't see why the Cohen Brothers couldn't have included). It's a difficult read if only for the lack of ' and " in the writing. Speech isn't delineated from the text at all and it's a little hard to follow who said what at times. Still a great read and definitely something to check out if you want to understand the movie more.

which leads me to the whole "you shouldn't have to read the damn book to understand a movie" argument. I mean seriously, you shouldn't.

How is retelling a true, historic story about one of the greatest military units of all time "glorification"?

It's more about the troops and less about the war. It's just a FANTASTIC series and well worth a watch.
