what the hell is up with a bunch of street dates being pushed back?!

I was hoping to get my hands on 40 year old virgin and knocked up this week, but apparently they are pushed back to next week gah!

I am a bit glad though because next week is epic. those afformentioned movies plus iron man, land of the dead, the thing and the dawn of the dead remake and also the godfather triolgy. I swear to christ I hope I can get all those next week without another delay.

Because of my OTHER hobby (gaming), the only Blu Ray's I'm guaranteed to be buying are Dark Knight and Wall-E. Everything else is going to depend on the great Amazon putting out insane deals.

As good as the movie lineup is, the gaming lineup is awesome as well. LBP, Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Gears 2, Banjo. I'm going to be in trouble.

word. TDK and Wall-E are also my 2 Bluray must buys this winter. Don't really know what else is on the horizon though

Fable II, Fallout 3, Gears 2, LBP, FIFA 09 and PES 09, holy shit. Each and every one of these games could easily eat up hundreds of my hours. Fuck fuck fuck.

Yeah, my movie and game time are both reduced already and to choose between the two is hard. "do I watch a movie, or do I play a game?" Luckily I have $125 budgeted every two weeks (aka every paycheck) to spend on games and/or movies so that's not too much of an issue.

Then again, with my time restraints maybe I should just save that $125 for awhile and get something useful, like a new TV and receiver.

Eh I find i dont have time to play every game right as it comes out, and i dont really care about playing (single player) games while everyone else is, get em on the cheap later then play them.

Will definitely be getting R2 and LBP on launch though.

I thought they were always scheduled for September 30th?

fuuuuuuck, I hope my cross-border Godfather set from amazon will make it in time before the weekend. 4-6 day shipping and today is the fourth day (shipped on Tuesday).

I got The Thing this morning - my first Universal BD, which is weird in itself - and the little booklet on U-Control inside has the Serenity Blu-ray on the front. Has it been confirmed that this is coming yet?

Also I picked up the new issue of Empire today and saw an ad in there for a UK Blu-ray of The Shawshank Redemption, by ITV DVD rather than Warner but with the Sony branding on the box (grey crescent at the bottom), which is out on Monday. I'd heard nothing about this and had no idea, and if it's any good I might just grab that instead of waiting until December to import the US one. Has anyone seen any reviews?

Warner Bros. is upping the ante in the awards-season screener game by going Blu-ray, and Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" could be the big beneficiary.

The studio has sent out a mailer to Academy members, offering them the option of receiving screeners in the Blu-ray format in lieu of watermarked regular DVDs. Nolan, a proponent of Blu-ray, urged the studio to make history with the foray into new technology.

"We really tried to do a lot with the film technically to give audiences a real reason to go see the film in theaters," including shooting sequences in large-format Imax, the "Dark Knight" director said in an interview.

But for Academy members who haven't seen it in theaters, or simply want to view it again, he said, "the Blu-ray version is vastly superior to DVD. You can actually see the things we did in Imax, and it will give Academy members the best possible chance to see what we did technically."

"Dark Knight," which debuted theatrically July 18, doesn't face those problems. Nolan, working with his director of photography Wally Pfister, already has mastered the Blu-ray version for the movie's commercial release on DVD and Blu-ray. Warners hasn't announced a street date yet but the betting is that the discs could hit stores Dec. 9.

For "Knight's" Blu-ray incarnation, the director said he was able to approximate the changing aspect ratios of the film's Imax edition. The sections shot in 35mm will play in a letterboxed format, and for the Imax sequences, the image will expand to fill the entire widescreen. While that doesn't capture the complete Imax image, "it still gives us more of the way it was projected in Imax," Nolan said.

Warners will be holding the usual awards-season screenings of the movie, and the film will be rereleased theatrically in January, but Nolan said that if Oscar voters can't make those, "the Blu-ray version is also an excellent way to see the film."

It's too early to tell how many of the Academy's 6,000-or-so voting members will take advantage of the offer. A couple of Academy members said they tossed the mailer because they don't have Blu-ray players.

If true, I will forgo my rule of not buying anything for myself for the month of December (I hate Christmas) and get this day 1.

Just got my Godfather Blu-ray set today, can't wait to check this puppy out.
First two movies are are incredibly restored considering the state of their original film (third one didn't require much restoration at all apparently). However, you can still notice a small dust speck here and there in all three films. Considering how atrocious were the DVD releases so far, this literally looks like revelation though.

Are they seriously going to do this for the commercial release though? Change the screen area in the middle of the movie back and forth? That seems like a really strange decision.

They did it in the IMAX theater. I don't think it's all that weird for a home release.

They should be able to make a branched version of the film much like Close Encounters so that if people want to see it it will seamlessly include in the film. Should make everybody happy.

to mean that WB had already mailed the discs and I was going to make a pithy comment about how dumpster-diving was going to experience a 200% increase in Hollywood but then I reread it and saw that the mailer in question was just a piece of paper, not the actual disc. :/

It's truly bizarre for a home release. To go from your screen being letterboxed to filled frame and then back again.

One or the other please. Give me a consistant aspect ratio.

Bandai Visual will be releasing Akira on Blu-Ray on February 24th for $49.98. Here's the press release, which includes some technical details. This is overpriced by Blu-Ray standards but mildly sane compared to BV's previous pricing. I am totally stoked and will be buying the hell out of this as soon as possible.

Eww if the aspect ratio keeps changing on the Blu-ray. At least make it an option.

I've seen a few films that have done it on home video - both from Disney, oddly: Enchanted and Brother Bear - and they both did it for stylistic reasons to do with the story. Changing it just because they can is like opening up a Super 35 movie for the "omg black bars!!1" crowd.

They are not changing the aspect ratio it because they can, they are trying to preserve as much of the native aspect ratio and detail of the stock they shot the film with.

Like CajoleJuice said, in Imax theaters the film alternated between 2:40 (35mm) and 1:43 (65mm Imax).

The strange thing is that they did crop the imax sections for regular theaters so the entire film would be 2:40, but for the blu-ray they will keep the 2:40 35mm sections intact but crop the imax sections to 1:78.

I cant wait to hear the reactions from the home theater crowd.

$50? Good grief. I thought the new Bandai being swallowed up by the older Bandai would end these high prices.

At the risk of kicking off one of 'those' debates here, the aspect ratio of the film is 2.40:1. Since the whole thing would have to work in 2.40:1, even the IMAX scenes would have been shot with that in mind, and just because there's more picture there in the IMAX stock doesn't mean they should fuck around with switching aspect ratios in the film just to show it. Much of Lord of the Rings was shot Super 35, but they don't open it up just to show more when they can. If it was the intention for Dark Knight to look like that, why not shoot the non-IMAX stuff in 1.85:1 or whatever so that it looks the same throughout?

I'd like to see the IMAX stuff, but with the branching technology it's quite simple for them to offer an option for a consistent 2.40:1 or the IMAX version that switches between them. Hell, that kind of stuff is possible on standard DVD.

That's the MSRP; nowhere will be selling it for that much. It's about $10 more than is typical for a Blu-ray I think, but even the MSRP on most new DVDs is still like $25.

I agree with the second paragraph for sure. But the bolded part is what they did for IMAX theaters. I'm just surprised I didn't hear so many people seemingly so surprised or outraged when the film was in IMAX theaters that way. But I guess you had your choice in regards to going to an IMAX theater or not. :P

Bottom line, they definitely should have the option in the disc.

You're going to be disappointed anyway, especially with 40-Year-Old Virgin. The master on that one is so processed that it looks like upscaled DVD.

Sounds like best buy was wrong, I have had them on preorder with amazon, and amazon emails you anytime any change is made and i haven't gotten any emails from them about it.

I'll be buying this. It'll hurt, but I'll be doing it.

150 million off the bottom line is pretty damned significant, whatever way you cut it.
Its still 150 million they never should have had in the first place. Its also not likely that they are going to pay it all at once either.
This is of course assuming that the Tolkiens are correct and not making a false accusation.
