I've got replacement covers for BSG if you're intersted =) I replaced my bulky set awhile ago but paid more like $6 a case unfortunately.

Well, if they didn't use any of the TV animation they did use the old key frames, soundtracks, and so forth, including editing some sequences shot for shot. I'm not saying it doesn't look nice, mind you, but it's certainly not what you would call all new material.

Well, I already have the Ultimate Toy Box DVD set, so I can watch whenever. But it's hard to resist them on Blu. They're two of my favorite movies ever.

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced 'Minority Report' on Blu-ray. This Steven Spielberg science-fiction thriller, based on a short story by Philip K. Dick and starring Tom Cruise, will be released on a two-disc edition on April 20. A "true 4K master" of the movie had been created in late 2009 by LaserPacific post production company (see blu-ray.com, September 11, 2009).

And another thing, if people start complaining about the film grain used in this movie, I'm going to punch someone in the face. I better not lose beautiful detail to DNR bullshit!

So did anyone pick up that Planet Earth blu ray?
 
I went on a war-movie buying spree. I purchased Full Metal Jacket, Jarhead, and The Hurt Locker on amazon. Hopefully all three will be awesome.
 
Put in the Within Temptation Black Symphony disk to test my new BD player since the PS3 started glitching trying to play BR movies since the last firmware update.

Such an amazing concert to have on blu-ray :D

Still super pissed off about my PS3. :(

PM Sent. I have found the 14mm versions, but the Vernon 6 disc cases are 21mm. Can not find the 21mm versions anywhere and I have zero skills with PS and GIMP. I tried to resize the 14mm versions I found on AVSForums, but it ended in tragedy.
 
Minority Report on Blu-ray? Finally!

It's about time we got some more Spielberg in any high-definition format. Up to now, it's only been, what, CE3K and Indy 4?

Here's hoping for some Jaws sooner or later.

It doesn't hurt that I also quite enjoyed the film in question. I haven't seen it in a couple of years, but now I guess I'll wait until April.
 
La Dolce Vita is coming later in the year, along with De Sica's Shoeshine and Visconti's Bellissima, La Terra Trema, and Ossessione.

It's sad to see how little classic fare is available in the US compared to the wonderful selection that's out in the UK and France, but at least some companies besides Criterion are starting to trickle things out. The more the better.

Warner Brothers will bring popular classic films to Blu-ray High-Def in 2010, along with several others from their general back catalog (including two-film "double feature" editions).

I'm probably the only one who cares, but seeing What's Up, Doc? on the slate is a nie surprise. Don't let Streisand put you off: this is a phenomenally bonkers comedy.

Seriously. It's not rocket science when they're bringing the theatrical versions out this year and there are two new movies in the series in the pipeline. They do actually want people to buy the upcoming BD set so they're not going to supersede it in a couple of months.
 
Minority Report is one of my favourite films so I am so happy that's it's getting a release. If some monkey goes near the DNR button I may kill someone though.

The remastering of Minority Report

In 2009, 'Minority Report' was re-mastered at 4K resolution using the original negative, under direct supervision of the Poland-born cinematographer. According to LaserPacific's Senior Colorist Lou Levinson, "when Janusz Kaminski saw certain scenes in the movie, he was astonished to see details that he had never seen before. Working at 4K is as close as you can get today to seeing exactly what is on the original negative" (source: LaserPacific).

Levinson was able to tweak not only the color but also the grain levels from shot to shot if necessary. He explains, "Janusz Kaminski is a cinematographer who uses the texture and grain of film as an integral part of the image. He was excited to be able to have the control over each shot that you get with a digital process, particularly the ability to adjust the grain level."

The grading process began with Levinson matching an answer print. The answer print consisted of individual reels that Steven Spielberg had selected as best representing how he wanted the movie to be seen. At that point, Janusz Kaminski came in to work with Levinson. The grading was done while viewing the 4K files rather than a lower resolution proxy.

Steven Spielberg was also closely involved in the remastering and the resulting HDCAM-SR master represents how the creative team want the movie to be seen by viewers today.

The HD master used for making the Blu-Ray release was created directly from the color-graded, dust-busted 4K files. Going directly from 4K to HD resolution eliminates any filtering or resizing artifacts that can result from intermediate steps.

Ones I'm definitely getting. Others are maybes, but these are definite.

And I'm aware how weird that list looks, having Ace Ventura next to Doctor Zhivago and Ben-Hur.
 
Universal is releasing a new Battlestar Galactica boxset on Blu-Ray and DVD that has new packaging and The Plan. It might be worth waiting to for pictures of the packaging before importing the European set.

Today Universal has announced a new repackaged re-issue of Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Series. Studio material about the new releases say that this version of "The Complete Series also includes the unrated, extended feature-length movie, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan." Pictures of the new "unlimited" packaging aren't available just yet, but the studio descriptions say the DVD will be in "Slim Snap Cases with an Outer Box" and the high-def Blu-ray version will be "Digipaks with an Outer Box".

Also of interest is the new lower cost. Despite the addition of The Plan to the disc count, the more standardized packaging is significantly reducing the prices on the new versions. The DVDs previously had been $279.98 SRP on the limited-package set, but the new box will bring the price down to $199.98 SRP. The story is similar on the Blu-ray side: instead of the old $349.98 SRP price tag, the new high-def release in the low-key package is just $299.98 SRP. No on-disc content has been removed, from what we've seen so far; they've added The Plan and simplified the packaging.

Do movies use Dolby TrueHD anymore?

I keep reading new reviews and notice that from block buster to budget release, DTS HD-MA is the norm now, even from studios I remember using TrueHD all the time.

Is there a reason? What was the last release to have it?

Just interesting, I wonder what Dolby thinks.
Maybe I'm wrong though.

DTS HD has built-in compatibility with regular DTS (aka DTS Core). DTS HD is also easier to use in Blu-Ray authoring software, especially when it comes to seamless branching.

Some Sony stuff is still TrueHD, as are a lot of Warner releases. Those seem to be wavering, though, and I remember reading that Warner had issues with TrueHD on the interactive commentary stuff, like on Watchmen.

I've heard a number of reasons flying around, but who knows what the facts are. There's the fact that DTS-HD has a standard DTS core in the file for backwards compatibility, whereas TrueHD requires a separate Dolby Digital track on the disc - that could take up more space or be more difficult to author. The aforementioned compatibility problems with TrueHD, which could factor in. Could also just be cheaper or more incentivised to go with DTS.

I've also heard it said that DTS still has a sort of cachet with AV fans from the DVD and even LD days, so that could factor in for some of them.
 
God damn it re: the new BSG set. I should have figured it was coming. It's not so much the inclusion of the plan or the lower price point that bothers me, so much as the redesigned packaging. The packaging for the existing is a complete fucking disaster.

David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic is coming to Blu-ray this April.

Universal is planning to release David Lynch's 'Dune' starring Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, and Sting on high-definition on April 27.

The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and supplements will include: Deleted Scenes with an Introduction by Raffaella De Laurentiis, Designing Dune, Dune FX, Dune Models & Miniatures, Dune Wardrobe Design, and D-Box support.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is still unconfirmed.
