The HD Movie thread

Let's hope Children of Dune comes to blu-ray too. The special effects for Children of Dune were done in HD. Hopefully when the new Dune movie comes out.

So Disney have upped their blu-ray remasters to three a year now? Dumbo is out in the UK soon, and I cannot wait for Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia. Since the very first with Sleeping Beauty every blu-ray release has been absolutely perfect so far.

Because the standard isn't out in the market yet? Middle of summer is when everything seems to release (including 30million+ BD players getting the 3D update). To correct the poster before you, JC has said the 3D BD release is this November (just as he said April 22nd for first 2D edition weeks ago).

Says there no 3D this year, despite Cameron's wishes. Samsung has it's sets out now. The players come in June. What exactly will people use them for?

You fucking kidding me? They expect us to shell out $20 for a "lean and mean" version? Nice way of saying "bare bones."

Do not want.

This.

I don't care about 3D, but without meaty extra features I'm not biting. Someone said it's a 2-disc release but I don't see that mentioned in the original post or indicated on the cover.

Amazon lists two-disc edition.

Its a BR disc + DVD. 2 discs.

All special features will be on the mega edition in the winter. I bet that will be at least 3 discs.

Also, the Blu-Ray will feature 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The same as the IMAX presentation, rather than the cropped 2.35 version that played everywhere else.

ohhh

So choosing between the film now or mega-Blu-ray in the winter?
I choose film. <3

I'm just going for the basic one next month. I liked this quote from the announcement...

Everything that is put on a disc takes up room – the menus, the extras, the trailers and studio promotions – and we got rid of all of that so we could give this movie the best picture and sound possible.
...and while I find it hard to believe that it won't have any promos or even menus - this is Fox, after all - I agree with this. Better have the best AV quality than some featurette that I'll never even watch.

Wasn't there supposed to be a remake that was going to be shitty? Or did that never happen? I was afraid it was that.

Is this the only special edition of Inglourious Basterds available in the US?

Apparently there was a really awesome limited edition in Europe? Any rumors of that one coming to the US? I LOVED the movie, but I want the best edition available. If this is the only version we're getting, though, then I'll go ahead and buy it.

I think there was a target only special edition that included the soundtrack besides that but I that's it AFAIK.

Has anyone bought any of the two-movies-on-one-disc things they have at Best Buy? I saw the Grumpy Old Men/Grumpier Old Men and Miss Congeniality 1/2 packs and was wondering if the quality was any good. The first would be for me, and the second for my wife.

What the fuck, HD GAF? How did this one slip under the radar? Why did no one tell me that Collateral is hitting Bluray on March 30th? Its only my most wanted Bluray since the format was invented!

I would probably care if I had a big ass TV (like 50"+); I doubt the increased bitrate would show much, if any, perceptible difference on my humble 42".

Only if you like pain.

The film is really good. But not the kind that I'd like to watch again.

I couldn't even sit through Collateral when I rented it a while back... I guess I don't have a thing for Michael Mann. Didn't he also make Heat? Another widely acclaimed film of his that I didn't like.

I'm with you. Cinematography is the only thing I have enjoyed in Mann's movies (only seen Collateral and Miami Vice) and I think Dion Beebe was responsible of cinematography in both films so Mann really doesn't have anything to offer me.

Funny, because I distinctly remember not liking the cinematography in both Collateral and Heat. If I remember correctly there were too many tight closeups and many shots felt claustrophobic. I personally like cinematography that is more relaxed and uses wider shots.

In Heat I felt like it was trying hard to get a lot of facial closeups for the "ensemble cast", particularly DeNiro and Pacino. The final action scene felt like it was Pan-and-Scan to me. I don't know if some of the DVD editions had different framing issues, it's possible I guess.

if I were to ding Mann on anything it would be his really terrible soundtrack choices. Hell, even Public Enemies had distractingly solemn and crappy music intruding on the action every so often.

As did Collateral, as did (especially) Miami Vice. Get him a new music guy, please.

The closeups aren't really used to 'show off' the cast.

Best deal ever on Princess & the Frog. At toys r us, there's a deal where you reserve 1 Toy Story movie and get $5 off any disney movie. $15 off if you reserve both Toy Story movies. I think they gave me both discounts. And I used a $10 off coupon from princessandthefrogcoupon.com. It came out to $7.71 total (varies depending on your tax, I'm in Florida), and I have $10 down on TS 1 & 2. They are essentially paying me to take Princess & the Frog.

I didn't care for Heat, I found it pretty dull. Collateral, OTOH, I really enjoyed, though probably not enough to rewatch it.

Octopuses excited by high definition television (HDTV)

Octopuses like to watch high-definition television (HDTV), say scientists.

In experiments evaluating how the cephalopods respond to moving images, they responded far more vigorously to HDTV than standard definition TV.

It appears their eyesight or behaviour is too sophisticated to react to lower quality images, say researchers in The Journal of Experimental Biology.

Knowing that octopuses prefer to watch HDTV gives scientists an important tool that can be used to study elements of their behaviour, such as personality.

Dvdbeaver has a review up for The Baader Meinhoff Complex, good news is that it's region free and the IQ is good. Judging by the official thread a lot of people missed it the first time so do yourself a favour and check it out at the end of the month.

Saw Princess and the Frog last night. The PQ was amazing, to say the least. Loved the movie, a lot of people have been saying it is "average," but I really consider it in the upper echelon of Disney animated films. Certainly better than anything else from Disney in the last ten years. As for the trailers on the disc, someone mentioned one for Fantasia, but I couldn't find it. I did, however, see the one for Beauty and the Beast, which looked fantastic, and there was also one for James and the Giant Peach on Blu-ray. No release date given, but I'd expect that one closer to Halloween.

June 15. Blu-ray will be a BD/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack.

Special features include:

* Maximum Movie Mode
* The Lost Tales (motion comics)
* "Starting Over" featurette
* Attitus Ross soundtrack featurette
* Eli's Journey (I think this is probably the HBO First Look, not 100% sure)
* Additional/Deleted Scenes

why no commentary? :(
They decided to go with Maximum Movie Mode instead of a traditional audio commentary, which is cool because MMM is awesome but it's a director's thing, I don't think I've ever seen a writer be a part of one.

If there's any demand maybe I'll do a Rifftrax :p

Disney tentatively plans to release its new Blu-ray edition of the original Tron! Look for it in November (a month before the theatrical debut of the new Tron Legacy sequel), or so says Jeremy Sheer who administers the Disney Movie Rewards program's Facebook site. He also posts word there that Disney currently has The Lion King set for BD release in October of 2011.

That's great news. Do you have any insight on how that aspect is chosen?

I have a pretty strong HD-DVD collection but don't have a bluray player yet. However, when buying new media I still STRONGLY consider bluray.

If I find a good price on blu I am open to getting it for the future. However, if it includes a digital copy or DVD I consider that purchase a lot stronger regardless of price.

I really hope more new releases start coming with dvd copy (or digital copy at the least.)

All Warner, Disney, and I think Fox new release Blu-rays come with a DVD and Digital Copy for this year at least. Universal has been doing Combo Blu-ray/DVD discs for a few catalogue releases.

Do the digital copies reside somewhere on the disc or does it simply take you to some online source for a download? If the latter, doesn't that mean they can expire in a short amount of time?

Yes, they do expire about a year or so from release. I don't really care for them. Including a DVD is preferred.

I think it's a little bit of a rip-off when they market a BD as a "two-disc special edition", which would lead any reasonable person to expect a second disc of additional features, when in fact the second disc just holds the digital copy. And it's not even HD!

Any chance of a director's cut for this one? Or did the director get to release the film he wanted in the theatres?
