Absolutely. I hope its grainy to fuck, I hate it when they mess with films to "clean them up". Fuck them up, more like :/

The original film makers were probably like, "Ugh, I wish we could get rid of this horrible grainy effect - I hope they find some way to cure us of this ailment in the future." Look at us now.

Edit: Not the makers of Aliens. The makers of the original films. Y'know, overall. Ah, screw it.

I finally got around to seeing The Dark Knight BD last night, absolutely amazing picture quality. Probably the best BD I have ever seen.

Late to the party I know, but it was so good even my friends wanted to repeat some scenes.

I assume you're referring to the IMAX stuff, which is pristine. The stuff shot on 35mm isnt anywheres near reference quality for the format.

Disney announced that the Nausicaä Blu-Ray will have Japanese, English, French, German, Korean, Cantonese Chinese, and Mandarin Chinese audio and Japanese, English, French, Korean, and Chinese subtitles. Good news for the Ghibli fans that don't want to wait for it to be released here in America.

Great news indeed. I am going to pick up all the Japanese Blu-rays for my Ghibli releases. Having both the English and Cantonese tracks makes it a no-brainer (I prefer the Cantonese dub for Laputa since I watched it originally in that dub as a child actually). :)
I hope the extras are subtitled in English as well though.

20th Century Fox has just announced plans to release more of its major catalog titles on Blu-ray (and DVD) this year, as part of its 75th anniversary celebration. Specifically, the studio has confirmed that its 3rd and 4th quarter Blu-ray slates will officially include The Alien Anthology box set (all four films restored in a new 6-disc set packed with extras - including everything from the Quadrilogy DVD box and new content as well), The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 35th Anniversary Edition (including new special features), The Sound of Music: 45th Anniversary Edition (restored with 7.1 lossless audio, and new features), William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (with a new HD transfer and BD-Live features), Moulin Rouge! (also a HD transfer with BD-Live content) and The Last of the Mohicans (in an all-new director's "definitive cut" with new features including an interview with star Daniel Day Lewis).

An industry report from the UK:

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/38503/Q1-Blu-ray-up-50-year-on-year

Q1 Blu-ray sales were up 69% over last year, driving a 10% growth in the home video market. Article says that BD sales now account for an average of 20% of a title's sales...which seems pretty high to me (?)

Top 10 BDs in the UK in Q1:

1. The Hurt Locker (Elevation Sales)
2. Up (Walt Disney)
3. 2012 (Sony Pictures)
4. The Twilight Saga - New Moon (E1)
5. District 9 (Sony Pictures)
6. This Is It (Sony Pictures)
7. Toy Story (Walt Disney)
8. The Taking Of Pelham 123 (Sony Pictures)
9. Inglourious Basterds (Universal Pictures)
10. Toy Story 2 (Walt Disney)

Walt Disney Studios Japan has announced the details of its July 14 Blu-ray Disc release of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind film on Monday. The Blu-ray Disc will contain soundtracks in Japanese, English, French, German, Korean, Cantonese Chinese, and Mandarin Chinese. (The Japanese track will be in linear PCM 2.0ch, while the other tracks will be in Dolby Digital 2.0ch.)

No 5.1 means no buy.

Why? The movie was made waaaaay before 5.1, so any surround mix would be a matrixed faux mix any way. You're getting to hear the movie the way it was intended, and uncompressed at that.

The movie was made in mono. I'd still want a new 5.1 soundmix as a secondary track. Hopefully it happens for the US release.

Pinocchio was originally recorded in mono but Disney was kind enough to remix it in 7.1 DTS for the Blu-ray release. I expect the same for all anime.

Do any of you guys know of any websites where I can be 100% assured that I can buy Let The Right One In with theatrical subtitles? Amazon only says it may have theatrical subs.

I just watched the trailer for it and my interest is peaked. Looks like a fun movie.

Oh shit, when Moulin Rouge hits BD I will finally want to upgrade my sound system to support lossless HD codecs. No way I'm listening to that glorious soundtrack in standard DTS when a lossless track is on the disc :D

Can anyone recc. a good documentary on blu ray?

edit: I should specify I'd prefer no nature stuff.

Also any chance that The Qatsi trilogy ever gets a blu ray release?

HD BritGAF might be interested to know the LOTR trilogy is £30 on Amazon.

tempting, but spending my money on disney this weekend as it the last weekend of BOGOF. also gonna get Star Trek season 3

Good lord I cannot wait for the Last of the Mohicans definitive cut blu ray! Such an amazing score and well Daniel Day Lewis is phenomenal in it. Just recently sold off my dvd copy too so this is music to my ears!

Plus in an anime, there is obviously no direct recording, so everything is composed with different layers anyway. This is no "matrixing" if you have many tracks that can be independently mixed. That's exactly like that that modern 5.1 tracks are done actually.

Matrixing would be to simulate 5.1 from a merged mono soundtrack.

And "matrixed faux mix" doesn't mean anything as every surround mix are artificially recreated in studio. There is no way to record a direct "real" surround sound on a movie stage.

maybe the sense of entitlement was funny.

In this economy, I expect to get the most out of my $. I am personally tired of the double dipping. If Disney can add 7.1 to their classic movies, why not the rest of the movie/anime industry?
