Am I the only one disappointed in Avatar?

I don't care for the film, but figured with it's use of bright colours it'd really pop on BRD. It all just looks kind of bland, really. Regardless of whether 16:9 is the intended aspect ratio or not, I find it really claustrophobic, as well.

A real disappointment.

As a movie, Avatar is just average. It's the same story we've seen countless times before. It's Dances with Wolves.... in Space!

As a visual treat though it's huge.

lol @ highdefdigest's Avatar review. Video section of the review bashes the 16:9 ratio decision until the very last paragraph where he is like "the transfer is awesome though".

His messing around with the ratio does kind of undermine the whole 'integrity of the art' argument as well.

"I don't like how this ratio has been meddled with... so I'm going to meddle with it by changing it to a ratio that neither the standard theatrical nor the IMAX version used. Oh BTW, the video quality is good."

I have heard their os going to be a re-release of Avatar with extra features and longer running time. Is this true, as I will hold off buying it now.

yeah, 4 disc in November. So glad I bought this Blu though. The best looking one I have.

Nobody has ever watched an extra feature.

You should only be holding out for it if you want 3D, which was the only decent thing about the film.

umm.. this is pretty stupid. Myself and a number of people I know watch extra features very often. VERY often. On a movie like Avatar or any difficult to make movie special features are usually extremely interesting, especially in a BonusView format. Now I'll be the first to admit that most people I know would be fine with the movie only editions.. obviously. But there is definitely a market out there for the special features of well put together releases.

Now for current movies, a special feature version should be a given.. For catalog releases that have already seen extensive versions released to DVD, it would definitely have to be new material. There will always be exceptions for me... Like I bought Apollo 13 despite the original DVD release containing more features. But the upgrade in audio and video are easily worth $16. Otherwise yeah... for a classic movie if there aren't any special edition upgrades over the DVD release the audio/video content better be a pretty massive upgrade.

they are only there to make you feel like you are getting more for your money. The only one i have ever watched was the star wars dvd.

Most people dont bother with the features.

I got Saving Private Ryan today. Watched a few scenes and it looks really good; more Braveheart than Gladiator as far as the Sapphire Series goes.

There's a comparison to the DVD on DVD Beaver.

wow huge detail and color timing difference. sooo bought.

Perhaps you missed the early days of the blu vs red thing where one of the biggest things that people flipped out about were the lack of extras and special features on early blu ray disks.
I will say that quality trumps quantity though.
I think you do not quite understand the term "most".
The words you are looking for is "I" or perhaps "some people"

People want the ability to have features, but most(as in most people i have ever spoken to on this issue) never use them but want them.

Optimum Home Entertainment has revealed that it will release six titles on Blu-ray in September as part of the StudioCanal Collection: Le cercle rouge (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1970); Delicatessen (Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, 1991), The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967), Mulholland Drive (David Lynch, 2001), The Pianist (Roman Polanski, 2002) and The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949).

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has set July 6 as the Blu-ray release date for the 1963 Jason and the Argonauts, featuring visual effects by Ray Harryhausen.

qft. I've probably watched the bonus features on DVDs once or twice... besides Star Wars. I've lost count of how many times I've popped in "Empire of Dreams." It's not often that bonus features are done right imo...

I love extra features. I almost always learn something interesting in the commentaries. Most of the video features are often fluff but not always, I love Disney's video features they do awesome home video releases.

thought it fitting for content:

We're also stuck with blurry, juddery, slow-panning 24fps movies forever because (thanks to 60fps home video) people associate high framerates with camcorders and cheap sitcoms, and thus think good framerates look 'fake'.

1080i sports says otherwise.

In 2004 the common LCD PC monitor resolution was 1280x1024. Not only is that not more than 1080p it's also a funky 5:4 aspect ratio. And let's not even get into how the vast majority of PC LCD monitors are TN panels.

Why is a 17 inch monitor we bought in 2004 being compared to a new 1080p tv? Is there not an obvious difference? Do you REALLY think it is in any way comparable, or how about the cell phone line...what's the point of that?

So you knew what high resolutions meant before the masses did, that doesn't detract from the fact that a larger screen is kickass.

No need to explain anything. XKCD is terrible all around.

Well, most people I've ever spoken to do watch the extras if they're behind-the-scenes or similar. One thing that I know a lot of people like that I don't get into is commentaries though. If I'm going to watch the episode / movie again, I'd watch it without commentary.

Yup.

Also, 24fps for life.

I am currently watching the 28 Days Later Blu Ray, it is quite possibly the worst conversion I have ever seen. The scene where Jim is watching home videos of his parents is atrocious.

To be fair, I wasn't expecting to be blown away by the video on this release. The majority of the film was shot using a European model Canon XL-1s standard-definition camcorder at 720x576 resolution (thanks to Grubert for the info), a decision on the part of the filmmakers to give the film a rough-around-the-edges visual style. As such, it’s unrealistic to expect that '28 Days Later' would look as sharp as other high-def releases. I did, however, hope to see at least some benefit from this Blu-ray transfer.

Ugh, stupid.

That's funny, I love commentary tracks.

..but only if they're good (this is rare). Werner Herzog has some incredible commentaries on a bunch of his films. Records it himself, even. I also love the commentary on the Criterion releases of Kurosawa's stuff.

Any chance the Canadian releases of City of God and Lost in Translation will play on a US player?

Amazon is selling Kingdom of Heaven, the director's cut, for 11 bucks today.

I've heard good things about the director's cut.. First bluray I've bought without seeing the actual movie first.

Kingdom of Heaven DC is my favourite movie of all time. Incredible cast and its a great shame that the vast majority of people would have only watched the inferior theatrical cut. The BD is also very nice quality wise.

Is there a blu-ray release already, I've had the HD-DVD release for awhile

i would love to know if anyone knows anything about a lost in translation blu-ray release for europe (well england), utterly adore the film.

Let's hope Lost in Translation gets a new transfer for BD. From what I read the HD DVD transfer wasn't too hot.

Also I should warn those considering the Kingdom of Heaven DC Blu-ray that it's barebones and doesn't have the extras of the four disc DVD release. I know some don't care for extras and blah blah but I'm just putting it out there.

I think the quality of the Avatar transfer more than makes up for the lack of 3D. It is incredible - the detail alone gives the image so much depth imo. It's surpassed King Kong as the best Blu-ray disc I own.

Anyone knows if the UK version of Avatar if region free?
From what I read the US version is, but I'd like to be sure the UK is as well before I'll buy.
