New Predator Blu-Ray edition is coming out at the end of June

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003L16FAE/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Hope it has a new transfer

Amazon Canada have the disc labeled as "Predator - Extended Edition" http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B003HNNS0Q/

Wonder if that is just wrong info, or if this new Blu-Ray will have a new cut of the film...?

Good lookin out, this is my fav movie of all-time. Not sure it needed another blu-ray release as the one out now looks great, and is only lacking in special features. Some of the blu-ray videophile forums are saying info is out there that its been remastered and contains never before seen footage.

Im not expecting much, since the timing seems like its just a cash grab to capitalize on whatever hype is out there for the new Predators movie that opens in early July, but count me in anyway as a rabid fan.

Surprised the nostalgia squad didn't catch this announcement:

Rent them imo -- I can't think of too many films I bought or would buy at full price these days with so many ways to get them for less by waiting a little. :p

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Alfred Hitchcock's horror classic Psycho for release on Blu-ray on October 19, in a "meticulously restored" 50th Anniversary Edition, with a new 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack (the original mono audio track will be included as well). Watching my new Criterion copy of M......I'm so glad they're starting to roll their older movies out on Blu, it looks amazing.

Watched a Karate Kid marathon.. Easily up there with like Poltergeist and Big Trouble in Little China in terms of transfers... EXCELLENT 80s transfers with nice film grain and a real "cinema-like" image. Haven't dug into the bonus features of the first movie yet, but the list is really nice. Bonus features on part 2 are a joke pretty much.

Still, a solid release and IMHO at $28 for the two pack on Amazon, and absolute steal, especially considering you get probably one of the top 10 80s movies of all time.

I just found out that Futureshop in Canada will be offering an exclusive steelbook edition of The Book of Eli. I wonder if one of my awesome GAF chums north of the border would be kind enough to pick one up for me? :D

The only negative is that their Blu Rays are no longer as cheap as they used to be. I remember being able to buy a Criterion Blu for $21 not too long ago. Now they all seem to be at or around $30. It's a shame.

Looks like Saving Private Ryan has been recalled:

From The Digital Bits:

PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT RECALLING SAVING PRIVATE RYAN SAPPHIRE SERIES BLU-RAY DISCS

Replacement Product to be Available at Retail by Tuesday, May 18

HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 12, 2010) - Paramount Home Entertainment today announced that it is recalling the Sapphire Series Blu-ray edition of Saving Private Ryan recently released in North America, the United Kingdom and the Benelux countries due to an audio synch error that occurred during Technicolor's authoring process. Although Technicolor employs comprehensive quality control measures, in this instance the issue was not detected prior to replication.

"Technicolor has been a valuable partner to Paramount Home Entertainment, and both Paramount and Technicolor are committed to providing the highest quality product to consumers," said Dennis Maguire, President, Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment Worldwide. "Our Sapphire Series was created to present our greatest films with the finest picture and sound quality available. Saving Private Ryan is a five time Academy Award® winning film including Best Director from one of America's most acclaimed filmmakers so we are recalling this edition to ensure that every Blu-ray disc honors Steven Spielberg's vision."

Technicolor has set up the following toll-free numbers for consumers who have already purchased the Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray, which provides details on how they can receive a replacement copy -- US and Canada: 888-370-8621, UK: 08000-852-613. Consumers can also return the Blu-ray to the stores where they purchased the product to receive a replacement. Technicolor expects to have replacement discs available at retail no later than Tuesday, May 18.

Oh, bloody hell. First the Gladiator debacle and now this? The Sapphire Series hasn't exactly gotten off to a great start, has it?

did they fix the gladiator debacle? or are they just ignoring it?

Gah, stop making me want to spend more money!

I'd buy it in a heartbeat though if they included this alternate ending to Part II: http://karatekidending.ytmnd.com/

The "Life" Blu-ray releasing on June 1st in the US, is that narrated by David Attenborough or Oprah?? (please be David Attenborough)

Sooooooo cool.

Anyone in UK, Euro GAF have the AV sync issue with Saving Private Ryan.

The Sapphire Editions seem to be US only AFAIK, the packaging and content of the Euro release mentions nothing of Sapphire series but the press release mentions otherwise.

US & Euro packaging for comparison:

Reminds me of the animated Transformers movie blu-ray that was only released in the U.K. I wonder if it will get a stateside release ever.

I can't see any sync issues on my Saving Private Ryan. I watched the part that people had mentioned and couldn't see anything untoward.

I'll call up and order a replacement, though. Could have problems on later hardware, even if it works on what I've got now.

I just called the number about the replacements for Saving Private Ryan. They said that retailers have been informed so you can get a replacement that way, or there's an email address to send details of where you ordered, your order number and your address. They'll send a fixed copy with a prepaid envelope for the old one middle of next week.

The email I was given is savingprivateryan.recall@technicolor.com, but bear in mind that that was from the UK hotline. A US GAFfer might want to check yours.

In case it hasn't been mentioned, HD over analog is officially dead on BD.

The new AACS adopter agreement states that licensed players manufactured after Dec 31, 2010 must downconvert analog (540p iirc) ... and a complete analog sunset is scheduled for players built after December 31, 2013.

There have been plenty of DVD recalls. It's not a new thing.

The complexity of Blu-ray and the number of hardware configurations and different specs (1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3D, etc) does make it more likely, though, and I've seen plenty of discs that weren't 'broken' skipping or displaying weirdness on certain hardware. A lot of studios just don't seem to spend the money needed on QA.

Cool. So they've cut off people with legacy HDTVs to close a hole that doesn't really matter because pirates can just rip the video in perfect quality straight from the disc. Always thinking of the customer.

that psycho release is awesome... the original Universal release on DVD was one of the early titles in the format that I could use to oooh and ahhhh people still ok with VHS at the time. Will totally double dip on that (actually fine with double dipping on most hitchcock.. North By Northwest was worth every single cent)

man last summer i was at the air port and i noticed colin firth was standing right fucking in front of me in the checkpoint line . i nearly shat myself x_x

Watched all of the Mission Impossible movies over the last few days, and really enjoyed.

PQ wise - the first one sucks real bad, the second is quite nice and the third is great.
Movie wise -

The first one is awesome. Espionage, suspense and mystery.
The second sucks. It's just all action. A really dumbed down version of MI.
The third, which I watched for the first time, was quite a ride. I enjoyed every minute of it, it was like a perfect blend between the first two movies.

You can really tell each one of them was directed by a different person. For better or worst.

I've held off buying it because I shelled out for the DVD special edition. Perhaps I will have to reconsider.
