AVSForum thread with pics of properly done Dutch release of Gladiator

The difference is obvious. Looks as good as, if not better than, the amazing Braveheart Blu-ray. Why is it so hard to get it right the first time?

Damn.

Makes the first release even more unforgiveable

edit: This isn't just a remaster, they've altered the color grading pretty heavily in a lot of scenes

I've got sealed copies of all the OOP Criterion Blu-rays (Third Man, Pierrot Le Fou, Man Who Fell To Earth). Trouble is they're sealed because I haven't watched them yet and now I'm reluctant to :(

If you open one, choose The Third Man. Personally I would open them all. Movies are meant to be watched first, collected second. If you have two copies of each I understand keeping one sealed.

This fall will be deadly on my wallet.
Just from what I know is coming out-

Alien box
Evil Dead
Seven Samurai
House (Obayashi)
Rocky Horror
Mars Attacks
The Skeleton Key
Hatchet
Se7en
Twilight Zone s1
Ghost Hound Complete
Killzone
King Kong
Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings complete
Beauty and the Beast
The Exorcist
Peanuts Holiday collection
30 Days of Night: Dark Days
Christmas Classics (Rankin and Bass)
Psycho 50th Anniversary
Goonies
Fantasia

I will open them. I'm working my way through my unwatched Criterions at the moment and will when I get to them. I bought them with the intention of collecting them to be watched, and if they're worth something at the end of that, so much the better.

My friend sold his copy of The Third Man for £40 opened (you pay about £18-20 to get them over here) so it's not like they lose all value anyway.

Also, holy shit at the new Gladiator version. Paging anyone who defended the Sapphire release.

*metric fuckton of special features and alternate versions

Hey.

Hey George? George Lucas? You know that Star Wars series you got? Just waiting to be released on Blu Ray?

Take some fucking notes.

From TheDigitalBits, Paramount is apparantly going to have a replacement program in place for the new, improved Gladiator disc.

Paramount Home Entertainment said:
We are implementing a limited exchange program. This program is only for those consumers that may have preferential issues with some of the technical DVNR (digital video noise reduction) and EE (edge enhancement) choices made in the original source transfer, and so would prefer to exchange it for one that addresses those preferences in a different manner.

While the version that we originally distributed was of the highest quality, some enthusiasts may prefer to view it without the Edge Enhancement and DVNR implemented as standard process in bringing the film to hi-def. This new master resolves those issues.

Awesome.

An early announcement to retailers indicates that, confirming earlier rumors, Vivendi Visual Entertainment is set to release the Weinstein Company production Grindhouse on a Special Edition Blu-ray on October 5 (perfect for a Halloween viewing party with friends). No release details are available at this moment, other than it will be a two-disc edition and that list price has been set at a very affordable $19.97.

Sadly, preorder price has shot up on amazon.com ($27.99), though amazon.ca has it for $14.49!

Finally got around to picking up and watching Yojimbo (haven't watched Sanjuro yet).
God damn it is an amazing transfer, I so can not wait for Seven Samurai now.

Lionsgate President and Co-Chief Operating Officer Steve Beeks and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola announced today that Lionsgate and American Zoetrope have entered into a multi-year home entertainment distribution agreement (including Blu-ray). The first title released as part of the deal was Coppola latest film, Tetro; the next one will be the renowned and award-winning war film Apocalypse Now, scheduled for Blu-ray release on October 19.

With new transfers supervised directly by Coppola, Apocalypse Now will come out in two deluxe editions: the 2-Film Set, and the 3-disc Full Disclosure Edition. The 2-Film Set will include both Apocalypse Now - The 1979 Cut and Apocalypse Now Redux and will also include over nine hours of special features. The Full Disclosure Edition will add the seminal making-of documentary Hearts of Darkness, a 48-page collectible booklet and storyboard, photo and marketing archives.
3 disc set sounds most excellent. Both cuts AND Hearts of Darkness

I wonder if they've realized how lame it is to arbitrarily crop a ~2.35:1 film to ~2:1(?) for home video. Good news, though. I watched Hearts of Darkness as well as the last DVD they put out of A.N. a couple of months ago and was surprised by how good the film looked and sounded. Hopefully they won't fuck up the HD release.

Update on the Gladiator Blu-ray situation

TheDigitalBits said:
Paramount has now informed us that the new revised Blu-ray with the vastly improved HD transfer will have a YELLOW UPC symbol on the packaging, as was the case with Saving Private Ryan. So that's how you'll recognize it in stores.

Again, the Paramount customer service number to call to arrange the exchange in the States is: 323-956-3010. A few of you have reported trouble getting through, or that the voicemail box is often full, so please just be patient and try again over the next few days. They're getting a LOT of calls as you can imagine, so they're pretty slammed. You can also try this e-mail address: phe_customerservice@paramount.com. Just be aware that they're getting lots of e-mails too, so it's going to take time for them to get back to you.

When does the updated version hit stores in the USA?
It won't have a set release date, it's being shipped to retailers as a sort of replacement SKU, similar to what happened to Saving Private Ryan due to its audio problems. The only info I could see about when is that all future shipments of the Blu-ray will be the new disc, so I'd say a month at the latest.

Thanks for the info. :D

So glad I didn't go for the first Gladiator release after reading all of this. Any news of when the yellow-sticker awesome version will be hitting North America?

The framing of Apocalypse Now has been the object of a long controversy. The film was shot on Super Technovision (anamorphic 35mm), which has a projected aspect ratio of 2.35:1 (actually, 2.39:1). However, all of the DVD releases of the movie have been in a modified aspect ratio of 2.00:1. Back in 1999, two of the producers of the movie confirmed that it was cinematographer Vittorio Storaro's decision that "for home video + broadcast, he would transfer the film with a slightly modified framing: 2.0:1." Hence, this BD release of Apocalypse Now is the first release (including the LaserDisc) to sport the original theatrical aspect ratio.

FYI, the Remastered Gladiator is already being found in stores.

Its apparently missing the "2 disc set" remark on the lower right hand corner

Shitload of Blus on sale for 7.99 - 9.99 at Best Buy

Thanks for the heads up! I went over to Best Buy earlier in the week and picked up An American Werewolf in London for ten bucks, and may drop back by to snag Lord of War for eight.

First review of Psycho from the UK; Universal's US release should be using the same transfer, so for once it seems they'll release a catalog title without botching it.

The dense grain structure is completely intact throughout the VC-1 1.85:1 encode, blacks are deep and lush, and whites are sharp, resulting in a beautifully-nuanced image that belies the film's age – and which none of the previous DVD incarnations of the film can remotely compete with.

Kudos must go to the audio boffins at French outfit Audionamix who reverse-engineered the original monophonic stem to create multiple tracks that could be mixed and steered to create a 5.1 soundscape – their work is surprisingly effective. Of course, purists can view the movie with its original audio presentation (in a two-channel mono DTS-HD MA) but more intriguing is the 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundmix.

Would anyone mind checking something quick on their Kick-Ass Blu-ray for me?

On mine, at the 1:06:xx point in the movie when Red Mist
bursts through his father's office door and yells "They're all dead!" after the warehouse fire scene
, there's some heavy digital distortion when he says the word "dead" and a little on his next line,
"Everybody in the warehouses is dead!"
.

It sounds kind of like it's played a little fast and is echoing over itself. Kind of hard to explain, but it's I figure digital distortion should be enough to go by. I'm playing the disc on a 60GB PS3 fat.

I tried looking around online to see if anyone had the same issue and all I found was some unrelated playback problems.

Thanks in advance if anyone doesn't mind taking a minute to check theirs.

Found the new remastered version at my local Best Buy today. They had both on the shelf, which tells me the old ones weren't recalled.

I can confirm that the previous reports of the new one having a yellow UPC were incorrect, but the missing "2 Disc Set" is one way to identify the new one. I also noticed that there was no security sticker on it either, which I read was the other way to identify it.

It looks awesome, truly what it should have been first time around.
