Yeah, I think all of the 90s Disney movies were hand drawn then scanned into computers, for coloring and all that. Excepy maybe the backgrounds? Those might have been handpainted...not sure.

Bill Hunt: Looking at the screenshot comparisons you guys provided between the 2001 master and the new 2010 master, there's a marked difference in the color-timing. Color seems more vibrant now, and contrasts are bolder. Can you talk about that? How those decisions were made and what the differences might be?

Doug Delaney: Sure, I can touch on that and James can chime in. One of the original conversations we began to have when we started looking at doing this work, was using the original transfer in 2001 as a reference – as indicative of the best possible transfer at the time, using that technology, and with a lot of time spent with Vittorio on that original transfer. We also screened – myself, James and Mr. Coppola – the dye-transfer print as well. And we wanted to get back to that in terms of not just aspect ratio, but the contrast and color saturation characteristics of a dye-transfer print in terms of its natural rendition – to be a little bit more, I guess, faithful to that original projection of that dye-transfer print. To get to that point, there was a little bit of negotiation between using both sources as inspiration, I guess is the best way I could put it, between that beautiful dye-transfer print Mr. Coppola had as well as honoring the time and quality of the transfer in '01 that obviously had Vittorio's time put into it. Some scenes tended to carry over very well with regard to the two transfers, and some scenes felt more akin to the dye-transfer print.

Wow @ Beauty and the Beast screens!! I'll never forget how they butchered the DVD transfer with excessive compression, which actually made me skip that release completely.

Did anybody else get in on that Lord of the Rings boxset pricing error at Family Video? Got one for $22.99, but it's on back order. Looks like they're going to honor the mistake, as I got a back order email, and my order status has moved to In Fulfillment.

Wasn't planning on double dipping on these movies...again. But at that price, I'd be a fool not to. :D

Fairly good and it transferred over nicely for the most part imo. I had to turn the brightness a bit on my TV iirc but that may have just been something I on end.

Disney's doing the same as they did with the DVD platinum releases, spreading them out with major releases at Feb/March and the holidays. This scheduling is nothing new. October 2012 is probably the earliest to expect to it.

Disney's home video policies shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's been alive for the last 25 years.

The vault thing has to end after the Blu Ray generation, right? I mean, is it even possible to have a higher quality version of the animated films?

The Godfather is just a pretty dark movie. Watched a decent print of it a few years back, and the first thing that popped out was how dark it all was. Very dense shadows with low detail.
 
Seems like the Avatar Collector's Edition might feature an Extended Edition with 30 additional minutes, in addition to the 16 minute longer one. This footage would be seamlessly branched into the theatrical cut:

AVATAR - SPECIAL EDITION RERELEASE - NEW SCENES: Running time: 16m 5s

AVATAR - EXTENDED EDITION RERELEASE - NEW SCENES: Running time: 30m 36s

Most likely the 16 minutes from the Special Edition + an additional 14 minutes. Question is if those 14 minutes are finished. I would hope so, I could understand including 30+ minutes of unfinished footage, you know to showcase a WIP, but I dont see the point in including 14 unless its done. Either way, that would bring the movie to 192 minutes total.

Probably. As long as Disney keeps stacking that paper, they have no reason to stop.

But from a videophile point of view, could the quality of the animation even get better than Blu ray? I had no problem updating from VHS to DVD, and now DVD to Blu ray. But, at the moment, I can't even imagine why I'd update from Blu Ray to ??? .

I be excited to hear the 30 minute Extended Version was completed footage, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm happy right now for the 16 minute Extension.
 
30 mins sounds great if it truly is all finished footage.

I have a feeling it very well could be since it would be stuff inside the base that wouldn't require nearly as much CG as the jungle stuff.

Oh yeah, and a wonderfully shot dark movie it is. I think the settings were off on my LCD though. It was abnormally hard to make out anything my screen. It was probably just my TV. The conversion of all three films is fine.

When is this ultimate collector special edition coming out again? I might actually be more interested in watching the extras than the actual movie.

If a home video format is released that runs at 4k resolution (generally accepted maximum picture information you can obtain from 35mm film) then there'd be that, but that'd be decades away.

And yes, those Beauty and the Beast shots are godly. I've been looking forward to this one for a long time. That said, astonishing as it is, I think Sleeping Beauty has B&B beat for background detail. That I can even consider such a thought is a testament to how important these Blu Ray remasters are.
 
Does anyone have a 50" inch screen and a film with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio? If so, could you take a photograph of your screen watching the film. Thanks

Diminishing returns. I think even the jump from 720p to 1080p was not very significant. I'd say Blu-ray is the ultimate home standard unless 100' TVs become the norm.

Perhaps, but higher 'resolution' film formats, such as IMAX stock, would very noticeably benefit from a new format a couple of decades down the line; it'd a DVD-to-Blu Ray style of visual jump. As it stands, films recorded on >35mm stock such as Baraka can't be done justice in the home theatre space, but they are few in number.

Hehe, yes it's a projector screen. Viewing at that size really brings out the difference between bluray and HDcableTV, xbox, etc...

BluRay is basically the most amazing awesome thing ever!

Actually, I never did the Tinkerbell offer (didn't want it either, too many things to do that week) but I will be getting BatB at TRU and using the $10 DMR coupon as well as pre-ordering TS3 to save me $20 bucks off the $22.99 TRU sale price anyway. As I stated in a earlier, I have $20 in GC from them that will take the place of the Tinkerbell CG if need be. I will do the same thing with TS3 (probably pre-order Fantasia). At the end of the day BatB and TS3 are going to cost me next to nothing to buy with this deal.

For the person above who asked about Amazon, I don't think they have a deal like this or accept the $10 off coupon but can't you still cancel and take this deal? Sorry man, you should of know this was coming with the TS1+2+PATF for $6 deal. Your best bet now is there is a $10 off Disney deal if you own the previous BatB DVD. All you have to do is send in your proof of purchase. Hope that helps.
