Just got a Blu-Ray drive for my computer, and I am wondering which movies to buy first. Never owned Blu-Ray.

I'm looking after great movies, that look great(shows the difference from DVD), and preferebly with good extras.

I would also like to know about good shows and trilogy boxsets.

Is The Matrix and bourne trilogy boxsets worth getting?
My very favorite BD set is Rome. Amazing show if you haven't seen it, and the box itself, plus the quality of the discs, is spectacular.

I would say Bourne trilogy is worth getting. I don't own the Matrix trilogy but I've heard its good too.

For a recommendation I would say Band of Brothers is a must own. The Pacific is great as well.

Blade Runner, 2001 and Close Encounters of the Third Kind look amazing for when they were made.

Just about any animated movie looks great. Especially Pixar movies. Dreamworks too

Criterion movies always looks good too.

Edit: Deadwood comes out on blu-ray in 2 weeks (I think). And as the person above me said, Rome is great as well.

I did some Christmas shopping for myself and kids this week and went Blu-crazy.

Moulin Rouge
Bridge on the River Kwai
Charade
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Sound of Music
Toy Story 3
Mater's Tall Tales
Ramona and Beezus

Blu-ray collection is now at 245, with HD DVDs and DVDs adding another 987 movies to the shelves.

Blade Runner BRD is incredible. Looks like it was shot last year, fantastic PQ. I'd also recommend pretty much all the Pixar & Disney animated stuff along with How to Train your Dragon & Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

You also can't go wrong with Fight Club, Seven, Casino Royale and Planet Earth.

buying a tv tommorow and i wanna buy a good bluray that walmart would have as eye candy for it. is planet earth still sold in stores?

I dunno but you could probably find Life if you couldn't find Planet Earth since its a newer release. But you wanna get the Planet Earth or Life that's narrated by David Attenborough.

Avatar, Baraka and Wall-E are all incredible show pieces for the format.

Minority Report and 2001 are also very awesome.

All those movies look absolutely *incredible*.

Some other movies with eye poppin' HD visuals:

How the West Was Won
The Searchers
King Kong
No Country For Old Men
The General (84 year old, and it looks *so* much better in HD compared to DVD)

Way late to the party, but this deserves another shout-out:

Beauty and the Beast bluray looks fucking MAGICAL. We only threw it in for the first ten minutes, and skimmed for some of our favorite scenes, but god DAMN. Looks and sounds stunning.

Can't wait for Fantasia, Aladdin and the Lion King.

To think I nearly dropped $80 CDN for the DVD gift set with these two a few years ago. Here they are now in bluray splendor for $30. Sold.

Is there any reason there's no bd of the last Curb Your Enthusiasm season? I know it was shot in hd...

Christmas Carol 3D Blu-ray is great. B3D's must buy this Christmas I think.

First time I have seen the movie as well and I really enjoyed it.
More 'mature' than I expected really but still a family movie.

I have a question about this. I am not clear on this 3D stuff TBH. Can I play this on my PS3 (3d playable upgrade recently) + plain HDTV (non 3D) and still see this in 3d with glasses? I am getting confused with titles specific to HD sets etc. Or do I need a 3d set?

You need a 3DTV. Some old releases have the anaglyphic red/blue 3D that works on any TV, but every one I've seen pretty much sucks. Coraline comes to mind.

Edit: The 3D sucks, not the movie.

Is anyone else having problems with the Scott Pilgrim blu-ray? It's freezes and skips about 3 seconds during the Patel fight.

I enjoyed the movie as well. The marketing did the film a great disservice. It's quite literate and "grown up." Carrey turns in a great performance. The 3D was awesome in theaters.

3D was very good. Not a single in your face moment I can remember and good inwards depth. Seeing Scrooge walking up a stairwell with a candle looked just like I had drilled a hole in my wall and witnessing a cg world beyond it.

It's only 4 discs. If it was a 2-disc blu-ray it would list it at the top of the packaging like Toy Story 3 did. Also, I think 4 discs is enough. They are already bigger than my other movies on my shelf and 5 discs might get it in their mind that they can charge more which I wouldn't like.

They did a great service with that package. They could just have a single 3D Blu-ray and call it a day (outdated 2D BD players can still read a 3D Blu-ray as a normal 2D film using just one of the angles).

I'm watching mine on an 80gb PS3. I haven't tested it on another PS3 or blu-ray player though.

It did it a couple of times during my first screening of the movie on my PS3 80 Gb. The menu also popped during one scene, but I've watched it two more times since (Yes, I'm addicted to this movie okay) and it played fine.

I added About Scmidt along with the Matrix Collection....:lol

Edit: woxel1 thanks for the info! I'll check my disc when it comes in to see if I have this problem.

I did the same at first, have never seen it. Then I saw Austin Powers Collection for about 22$ after the coupon so thought it would make a nice Xmas gift.

Glad to help! :D And thanks for the glitch info, will check it out.

Gotta love Disney. Even though they are priced higher (or at least don't lose their price), there's a reason they sell so well ... Disney GETS it. Reference quality audio/video transfers, tons of extras, and multiple formats for the ride.

pretty nice price for alien boxset on amazon right now

alien anthology bluray set + last of the mohicans DC bluray = $65

Oh man, how much cheaper can the Alien Boxset really get during the Black Friday week? That's pretty much $32.50 for it, and I don't see it getting any cheaper ANY time soon on it's own.

....I'm about to jump on that deal.

EDIT:

Or $13 per movie if you really want to get down to it.
