i picked up eastern promises on hd-dvd and watched it last night, great PQ, AQ, such an awesome movie, prolly top 5 of this year, so good

watched Blade Runner the other night on BRD, very nice transfer, so shots are stunning, if you're a fan of the movie, this is a must buy

finally got around to watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, this is prolly absolutely top tier when it comes to PQ, some of the stuff is jaw dropping in here, and truely 3D

they finally shipped it? I thought it'd been delayed.

Isn't this fox though? therefore stupidly region coded even though its an ancient release?

I have a region A player but its sometimes nice to pick up the UK exclusive releases (like face/off, the rock, con air etc)

Yeah it's Fox and region-locked to B. But apparently (source: AVS Forum) the title IS region-free...but, because it's got BD+, it will only work on Region B players anyway:lol

OH MY GOD! Amazon told me I can expect Blade runner on HD-DVD to be delivered by the 29th but I GOT IT TODAY! I am very happy as this is my favorite sci-fi flick of all time. I'll be watching this baby tonight.

No if only the copy of Hot Fuzz I ordered over a month ago would show up from DVDplanet :(

Oh man, Eastern Promises is soooo good. I picked it up today along with Kingdom and Pan's L.

Eastern Promises is a great great movie with a very satisfying ending that takes the movie to a new place.

"There I fixed it!"

I always hated that meme, OTOH I had to weigh in on how much liked the ending.

I watched Curse of the Golden Flower a few nights ago. Really bright and beautiful picture quality. The colors definitely pop, mayhap a bit too much at points; the gold can be a bit blinding. Still an awesome looking disc. The movie itself...stylish and wafer-thin. These epic historical martial arts movies seem to get more underwhelming every year.

Watched the first half hour of the second Pirates movie while wrapping presents. Great PQ, although I liked the look of the daytime scenes more than the nighttime ones. Movie itself is dumb, but gloriously so.

I just got the whole Bourne trilogy as an xmas gift from my mom (told her about the BB sale yesterday). can't wait ro watch.

I thought the movie was rather flat, but the information revealed at the end worked in its favor, boosting my opinion up a bit -- although I felt that several unnecessary minutes should've been trimmed at the very end of the film. While it's a very nice transfer, this isn't one I'll be keeping.

The recently released Tremors HD-DVD looks positively wonderful (with a bit of edge enhancement present, for pickier viewers to complain about) but I do wish Universal could've gone an extra step to add a commentary track or two. Ah well, I've waited this long just to see a quality transfer for the movie, so it's more than adequate.

Just wanted to chime in after watching the Blu-Ray version of Blade Runner last night. :O My only other experience watching the movie is the old craptastic DVD that's been out since near the beginning of DVD and the improvement is astounding. Not everything is a home run but for the most part it was very impressive. A definite must own in my opinion.

?!?!?!?!

I wasn't expecting any miike flicks to hit blu-ray for quite a while.

Just saw The Kingdom HD DVD. Good movie, I'll definitely pick it up at some point. Not a big fan of shaky cam movies, but this one was well paced and visually interesting. The iME special features seemed solid, though I didn't see all of it.

Just got Sunshine and 2001 on BD today (my first two HD movies) and holy shit at Sunshine. I loved it before but this is the way it's meant to be seen, stunning visuals and exceptional music in awesome quality. Totally blew me away, good extras as well (2 commentary tracks, 2 short movies, deleted scenes etc.).

I have yet to stay awake through 2001 though (got further than ever before this time!). :P

So tell me lads; whats the likelyhood of Fight Club coming to Blu-Ray? It's like my favourite ever film and I'd love to see it in High Def.

Signs point to Next Year (2009) for the Tenth Anniversery.

one of the short movies is realy good (dads dead)

@topic
i just ordered blackbook, 28weeks later and into the blu @bluray :D

I picked up Terminator 2 b-r on boxing day. I heard the transfer was good...but didn't realize it was just the regular edition. Is it worth keeping this version? Does the extended edition add very much? I may return it and pick up the extended edition when it inevitably hits b-r.

Decado said:

Yes, it's definitely my preferred version. It gives a lot of explanation to how the Terminator is learning things (and has a lot more character development scenes in general) and it injects a much needed dose of Michael Biehn.

*
Oh and by the way, is The Terminator (1) worth it in HD? How significant are the improvements over the DVD release?

Same applies to The Road Warrior.

I watched up to the intermission of 2001 last night, and man that movie is a revelation in HD. I can't get over what a great job WB did for this release. I feel like I hadn't even seen the movie before last night.

I saw Paprika (Blu Ray) last night. I liked the movie a lot, and it looked pretty much flawless, which I expected. But what surprised me was how active the surround sound was on it. The soundtrack to that movie is excellent, I listened to the track at the end until the credits finished rolling. Never done that before.

Got 3 new movies today using that AVS BB $20 off coupon (must buy 3 blu-rays) and another $20 in rewards certs. Picked up Paprika, Volver, and Letters from Iwo Jima. My BR collection is growing about 10x faster than my dvd one ever did. :lol

pans labrynth looks real good, veru happy with purchase.

re the road warrior: looks great in the daytime scenes, tier 1 stuff. the night scenes are rougher, but most of the movie is set during the day.

Is Batman Begins ever coming to Blu-Ray?

assuming nothing wacky happens with wb, i would guess they are waiting for tdk to release in theatres. its a really good transfer, fwiw.

Just finished watching "Shoot'em Up" Blu-Ray. Action movie nonsense that delivers 100%. A movie that most likely will be overlooked this year by most however. Usually I don't like action films if this sort but with the movie not taking itself seriously at all it complimented the humor with some great visuals and direction in the nonstop action sequences which I haven't seen this entire year in an action flick.

Just finished watching Eastern Promises.

Damn, that was EXCELLENT. I thought History of Violence was good but definitely overrated. I actually think EP is underrated. Loved the story and that had to be one of the most satisfying endings all year.

Definitely a toss up between this and No Country as my favorite 2007 film.

watched Casino Royale last night with the wife. Seen it before at the cinema but this was the first time on bluray. Great disc.

Couple of questions on the movie though that I didn't get. Whats the deal with that CIA guy? Le Chiffre said something but it was never really cleared up - just a bluff to confuse bond? And what about that french guy who was their contact - why was he taken away from the hospital at the end?

The CIA guy is Felix Leiter, a long-term Bond supporting character. As this is a reboot, it's his introduction.

I'm not sure what you mean about LeChiffre, but he was indeed bluffing/lying when he told Bond that Mathis (the French contact) waas a double agent working for LeChiffre. That's also why he got hauled away near the end-- Bond thought he was a bad guy. Of course, that ends up not being true, and the actual double agent is Vesper Lynd.

Casino Royale is a fantastic disc. It was my most wanted BD movie and it certainly delivered. My next HD movie should be Traffic (HD DVD) which I'm not looking forward to, having heard about how horrible the transfer is. :(

So I finally watched Blade Runner all the way through. I loe the movie, and I think everyone ought to get it, but I was a little underwhelmed. It does look better than ever, but it's not always as crisp as a lot of other movies, IMHO. The street scenes and opening shots are all amazing, but a lot of the one-on-one character stuff looks soft. Perhaps that's how it was shot. Also, I didn't see a lot of differences in the Final Cut over the Director's Cut. Certainly nothing major.

In any case, it's still a great movie and deserves to be seen in HD.

I agree. There's some eye-popping stuff in there (like the scenes inside the flying cars with the closeups), while other stuff looks a bit soft. But this is easily the best catalog transfer I've seen (that isn't recent like Matrix). I think that's why it's receiving such praise in the PQ department.

casablanca looks better, and its 60 years old. i think grand prix looks better to, at 40 years old.

bladerunner does look great though.

I haven't seen any of the movies you guys mentioned. :D

I also think the movie itself is overrated and the High Def Digest review is too high.

But yeah, I still think the movie looks fantastic, especially for such a dark movie.

Overrated?!

Nah, I can see why you'd think that. Personally, I think the movie is awesome, although it has a few dated elements and a couple of weak performances.

go get all 3. 2001 is one of the best scifi movies ever, casablanca is citizen **** kinds of good, and grand prix is one of the best sports movies ever (especially if you are an F1 fan)

all 3 fall into my favorite movies list (though bladerunner is ahead of all of them except casablanca)

Actually I don't think that is correct

Vesper isn't really a double agent she needed Bond to win to get the money to give to the group that kidnapped her husband and I think she did it for Mr White who was above LeChiffre and wanted his money back that LeChiffre had lost. Mathis I think was working for LeChiffre (he told him what Bond thought his bluff was baiting him to go all in losing his initial 10million)

Vesper: That counts as a double agent to me. Mathis: I don't think the movie makes it clear either way, but since Vesper was working for the enemy, there's no damning evidence about Mathis. In the book (and sequels) he's a good guy, so I thought that was just a misdirection by LeChiffre.

Good points, anyway he is going to be in 22 so we shall see.

Picked up Payback: Straight Up on Blu-ray (take that, Paramount!). The movie looked phenomenal. Loved the color saturation. Unfortunately, I can't say that I like this version much more than the one released in theaters. Both are about equal.

Watched Resident Evil: Extinction.

PQ is through the roof, as to be expected. It seems every major modern blockbuster has this said these days, but definitely reference quality.

As for the movie... you know if it's for you or not. I enjoyed it, but your mileage WILL vary.

Best Buy has the set on sale for $58.99, and the one I picked it up at had DOZENS of the sets available. Cheaper than Amazon.

As the first PiP BRD title I gave the commentary a quick shot. There was some funkiness. Everything popped up and played fine, but when I turned the commentary off, my receiver (and PS3?) stayed in DD2.0. I didn't check to see if the PS3 stayed in 2.0 with the commentary on outside of commentary sequences though.

Anyway, I had to restart the movie to get 5.1 back on. Will investigate more tonight. I did notice that playback of the PiP on this title seemed a little less jittery than it sometimes seems on my 360 add-on. Don't know if this is the disc technology or the respective players.

Watched Letters from Iwo Jima.

1) This movie is great. Much better than the departed (which I liked too), how this didnt win best picture is beyond me. Just wow.

2) PQ is absolutely great on this movie.

I'm going to go get Flags of our fathers now. I heard it isnt as good as letters, but if its even half this good, I need to own it.
