Just got through the Potter movies. They all looked very good save the first one which was blurry in parts (and has pretty bad CG).

Are there any sub-$200 or sub-$300 BRD players out there or is a $400 PS3 the cheapest one?

I had some gift certificates, so I picked up a couple new discs recently. Although, I haven't had a chance to watch more the small bits of most of them.

Harry Potter: OotP - Haven't really watched this yet other than some short segmeants, picture quality looks pretty good from what I've seen.

PotC: At Worlds End -I did finish this one, the transfer seems pretty solid. My only complaint is that I don't think some of the special features were completely thought through -- Especially the "interactive" feature showing how they did the maelstrom sequence. Having Menus @ 1080p, but having short 1080i clips, and the constant switching between both started to really bug me. I'd rather just have the standard 1 hour or so documentary and not deal with the constant resolution switching.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back - Really basic disc, don't expect the special features that appeared on the DVD. No big deal to me as I've seen them, but I'm sure others will care.

Ratatouille - Amazing picture quality from the clips I watched, lots of special features that I haven't had time to check out.

Dave Matthews & Tim Renolds: Live @ Radio City Music Hall - Nothing special, but it's great to see it in HD. Decent picture quality too.

I was watching HP: Prisoner of Azkaban last night, looked pretty good. Professor Trelawney's hair looked amazing.

Unfortunately, it was late and I fell asleep!

I like being purple =)

Spiderman 3: (BLU) Wasnt bad at all! I expected a train wreck but it was a good popcorn movie. S1 and S2 were still better but from Ive been reading, it was a nice surprise.

Casino Royale: (BLU) The first action chase sequence ranks up there as one of the best ever. 2nd half of the movie tapers down a bit but overall a good movie. Still not convince with this edgier Bond.

Children of Men: (HD DVD) Hmm. Heard good reviews but I didnt really enjoy it. Interesting premise but the story never really fleshed itself out.

@ Lunatic Puma: Corpse Bride is one of my favorite movies of the past few years. Visually gorgeous, an utterly fantastic treat for the eyes, it's also a cute movie with charm and humor to spare.

I have it on DVD, HD DVD, and to be honest, I'm considering picking it up on BD for the mere 15 bones they're asking, too.

@ Everyone: I've been meaning to say, I was pleasantly surprised by "In Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry." The previews looked all right, but weren't enough to get me into the theater. Then, after reading High Def Digest's scathing review, I thought, wow, sounds like a stinker. But it was already on the way from Netflix by then so we watched it anyway.

I don't think I've laughed so hard since 40 Year Old Virgin. Seriously, if you like Adam Sandler and Kevin James, give this one a shot. Of course the subject matter is touchy, and of course some of the jokes are predictable, but there are enough surprises here, and the performances are spirited enough, that I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Even if Dan Aykroyd's speech gets a little preachy at the end, it doesn't negate the fun you'll have up to that point. And of course, it's the only place you can see Jessica Biel jiggling around in her skivvies in razor-sharp 1080p. :)

Thanks for the glowing review Kolgar. I will probably pick it up today/tomorrow though I'm trying to find a few other cheapies to use the $20 off 3 blus at BB.

I set up my PS3 last night with my PS2 component cables (HDMI are on order from Monoprice). I really wish it was white to match my other consoles. :(

Checked out a few clips of Cars. It looked and sounded pretty amazing which is saying a lot considering I'm using a 30'' HDCRT with a 5.1 logitech speaker set.

Which audio setting should I use for DD 5.1 or DTS (not the hi-def audio versions)?

Just got 2001:SO and A Clockwork Orange from Warner's sale that they had back in the early fall. They had notified me in November that I wouldn't get them 'til early 2008 and if I wanted to cancel. Naturally I did. So it was definitely surprising to find 2 quality BRD's on my doorstep, not having paid for them. :D

Still haven't seen Volver or Letters from Iwo Jima, and I just got Edward Scissorhands from Netflix today. There just aren't enough hours in the day and all that jazz... *sigh*

Got around to seeing Paprika, and boy what a treat that was. A few scenes were a bit soft, but overall this is exactly what I dreamed hi-def anime would look like. The colors, the sweet sweet colors. POPPED. If my TV could smile, I'm sure it had a wide grin the entire 90 minutes. The movie itself I didn't dig nearly as much as Tokyo Godfathers, but still a worthwhile purchase and no blind-buy remorse here.

Just saw 3:10 to yuma on bklu ray.

Such a great movie until the ENDING! Wtf the last 5 minutes betrayed everything that came before it. Movie turned into a joke. Crowes character just totally did some non logical shit.

Currently watching LOST season 3 on Blu-ray right now. Visually it looks absolutely stunning for a network TV show. The vegetation and jungle shots are extremely impressive. The scenes that occur during the day time against the ocean also look very good. Now if they would just announce dates for the first and second seasons I would be even happier.

Also taking my time with Planet Earth. But I think everyone already knows how fucking amazing it is.

Also picked up A Scanner Darkly, Goodfellas, and Bladerunner Collector's Edition but have yet to watch them.

I watched Heartbreak Kid on HD DVD last night. I'm not sure why this movie got so much hate from critics. I avoided it at theaters because of the bad reviews, but now I wish I'd went. Yeah, there were some stupid moments (pubes puffing up, donkey stuff), but that's expected from a farrely bros movie. Overall, my wife and I laughed a ton, and that's all I care about in a comedy.

As for the PQ, Paramount did an amazing job on this one. EASILY the best PQ on a comedy that I've seen, on either format. Razor sharp most of the time, with only some indoor scenes looking softish. Mexico looks fantastic, and just any random scene with characters talking looks great. It just shows that HD can really enhance ANY genre. I REALLY have to fight the urge to buy this one on Amazon, but I'm going to give Paramount some time to make a definitive statement about their future before I purchase any more of their movies.

I agree with you man. That movie was hilarious! And the photography was nice and translated nicely in HD.

"Remember the Tight Ones" :lol :lol :lol

better than Hott Fuzz? i think hott fuzz is the most impressive comedy i've seen in HD when talking about PQ

Ah, forgot about that one. No, I think Hot Fuzz is better overall, if only because even the indoor scenes on Hot Fuzz look sharp and detailed. But ok, Hot Fuzz is an action comedy, so Heartbreak Kid is still the best looking straight up comedy film I've seen in HD. How about that? :D

Sunshine is pretty decent, and does provoke some thought and some internal placement of yourself into the situation

although it turns into a slasher flick/lsd freakout in the last 20 minutes

Chris Evans can act, how about that...

Blu Ray picture quality is impressive

99% of the deleted scenes should have been left in the movie

Better than average, but unless you get a trade-in deal like i did i don't know if i can recommend a buy

Thanks. I've been waiting for some specifics about this. I imagine the color, especially in Hydra station sequences, is pretty fucking spectacular?

MAN I need a Blu-Ray player. I was just imagining the Looking Glass on Blu-Ray!

GAAAHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa.....

About Lost I saw this pic on engadgets blog:

dsc_1233.jpg

There are 2 Lost boxes. One is season 3 and one of them looks to have the color of season 2's box. Either that or the flash from the cameras made it look orange.

Today's purchases: Phone booth, Planet of the Apes (remake), Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy (these 3 were on a 3 for 2 deal) and Queen: Rock Montreal & Live Aid.

Recently watched:

Pan's Labyrinth: WOW! My favourite BD to date. This film uses colour very well, so it was important that they came across well. To compliment the fantastic picture quality, the soundtrack is amazing (DTS HD 7.1). I dunno how many times the buzzing insect sounds caught me off guard. Every time they seemed to fly behind me, I'd turn my head to the corner of the room. There is hardly ever a moment of complete silence in this film. I can't recommend this enough! Great movie too :D

Rush Hour 3: How bad is this movie :lol Great HD release though. Can't fault the picture quality at all. Has the same audio track as Pan's Labyrinth, so again, can't fault this. If only it was a good flick

Just ordered Batman Begins (yes on HD-DVD)from the USA, can't wait to see it. I read it has reference IQ.

It does. And make sure you check out the PiP, it's one of the best in terms of being informative and providing relevant in context material.

Batman Begins looked good overall but a little soft, imho.

I rented Sunshine on DVD. I really liked the movie so I will probably pick up the Blu-Ray version today, along with Pan's and Shoot em Up.

I've only watched the first disc so far but the lighting while in the station is freaking awesome. Even during the opening of the disc there is a forward by the writers and they even say how the quality is much higher than that of the HD tv broadcast. It's definitely some good stuff.

Perfect. Stunning. Amazing. Those are just a few of the words to describe the video quality of this 'Lost' Blu-ray set. The 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfers exhibit a breathtaking clarity and detail far beyond anything possible on standard DVD, and even significantly superior to the show's 720p broadcasts on the ABC network. Presented in the 16:9 aspect ratio of the episodes' original HD airings, the image is extraordinarily sharp, with no distracting edge enhancement or digital compression artifacts. Every blade of grass on the island, every stubble in Jack's beard, each one of Kate's freckles, and all the skin pores of every actor are visible in striking detail, even in medium and long shots. Colors are vibrant and bold. The contrast range is crisply delineated from inky blacks to bright whites, with an exceptional sense of depth in every scene.

A minimal amount of film grain is present in some scenes, but it has been well digitized and compressed to retain the proper film-like textures without looking noisy. The show has outstanding, feature film-quality photography and lighting, and all the lovely island scenery certainly helps to make 'Lost' the best-looking series on television, and now one of the best-looking releases in all High Definition media.

Amazing film, AAA transfer, and the soundtrack is superb. Too bad my receiver or player doesn't decode DTS-HD MA, but still, the DTS-HD core track sounds awesome (plugged via HDMI).

Pan's is one of the few movies that have come out in a while that I consider more than a movie and more of an experience.
I know many were turned off by the subs and whatnot, but it really is a remarkable movie no matter what format that you watch it on.

How's that? His own gang was getting entirely out of control, and probably would've ended up turning on him.

my copy is arriving soon. not that i can currently play it. i picked it up on HD-DVD for the extra couple of features and the *lol only hd-dvd new line cinema released* collectors value.

now all i need is microsoft to send me back my 360...

Exactly, not only that but he pretty much could see where he would end up.
His gang was out of control.
If they did a revisit a month later I would pretty much imagine that Wade was living in Mexico with that hooker chick and probably expecting his first kid.
He already escaped Yuma twice so he is not overly worried about that.
Whistling for his horse at the end running along the train was great at the end.

Will be first my first HD double dip. I'll probably sell my Studio Canal HD DVD edition for this one.

I'm watching Lost season 3 as well. Just saw the first episode and I have to say that it looks gorgeous. Kate and her cute freckles :D

MINE! I sold my steelbook collector's edition DVD a couple weeks back since I heard this was coming.

I gave mine as a gift a few years back since I had the Extreme Edition (big mistake).

wow zodiac looks amazing. Is this zodiac supposed to be good? I have seen so many horrible zodiac movies.

It's a great thriller.

I saw Stir of Echoes BD. A big meh to the movie. The PQ was alright, the audio was better imo. I like how they had both a DTS ES track and a DD EX track. Folks like me with older receivers and optical connections still get a great sounding track. I wish more HD movies would do this instead of leaving us with just DD 5.1 or plain DTS.

i watched my hd-dvd DC of Zodiac last night, great flick, awesome PQ

i just read that the movie was filmed all on digital 1080p cameras, and it really shows in the transfer, really sharp

i think the movie makes a nice send off to hd-dvd, great way to go out imo

I'm glad Sony decided to pack Spiderman 3 instead of Talladega Nights with their Ps3's now. As an HD showcase, Ricky Bobby fails miserably. I like Will Ferrell, and I like the movie, but the transfer really doesn't pop at all.

Planet of the Apes (remake): Not impressed at all with this one. Both as a movie, and as a disc.

Hellboy: Finally got round to this, after buying quite a few months ago. I thought it was awesome. The colours were great, especially the red texture of Hellboy during close ups. There's also like 3 hours bonus material on there too.

Phone Booth: Though I know its needed to keep the original feel of the movie, I'm beginning to hate 2.35:1 ratio (and those damn black bars again!). It just doesn't feel right when you're screen isn't exactly massive (even with my 66"). Either way, a great film and can't fault the picture quality. Nothing special, though it's not a film that can really show of in picture quality. For what it is, its a clear sharp image.

I watched Pan's Labyrinth Blu-Ray today, first time I saw the movie and I loved it! It's really not the type of movie you expect at all. It's actually a very dark film. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

PQ was amazing, but the soundtrack was the stand out, the music was beautiful. I left the movie on the menu screen for ages just listening to piano music.

Definitely a keeper.

That's a pretty good bundle, the exception being Ghostrider.

meh. I think i got better movies, for FREE, with my Ps3:
Patriot
Stir of echoes
The Prestige
Full Metal Jacket
Flight of the Phoenix

Watched Rescue Dawn tonight.

Movie was good, though it didn't blow me away or anything. Was a bit slow and if you've seen one movie sequence of Americans held by North Vietnamese, you've seen them all.

But the picture quality was amazing. Maybe the best I've seen to date for live action. Looked like I could reach through the screen and touch the actors. Extremely three dimensional and great color/detail. Jungles looked lush.

Was worth the watch.

Thanks for the impressions. I have yet to see it. It's been on my pile since December. Will get to it when school work becomes less hectic.

watched 2001 last night. yes, LTTP etc but its not out in the UK so I had to import it.

great picture quality. Also my wife had never seen it, so she watched as well. Although I think she's pretty pissed off at the ending :P
