I think my family's the only one that calls Vapor Rub "mentol." Hell even I call it mentol. I think"poloche" is the universal word for shirt in crazy Dominican Spanish since everyone calls it that or sneakers "tenis," it's hilarious. :lol
after you learn english you realize just how many words dominicans use that are actually just english words OR brands for that matter... why the hell do they call all toothpaste colgate!? :lol

EDIT: holy shit look what i found after googling dominican slang

My grandmother used to call peanut butter "pena par." I was so used to it that when I actually learned the real word for PB I was dumbfounded. :lol

My mom used to say"Miércoles!" rather than "Mierda" or other spanish foul language. Imagine my surprise when I bothered to learn the spanish names for the days of the week. :lol I had also used in an argument before with some other spanish kids, and convinced them in the end it was a foul word.

Oh, and the whole lemon and honey thing? I used to have it with sugar since I don't like honey. D=

Pretty much. I don't know any other place on Earth where the name for children is mixed with hell.:lol

I also found a lot of other strange sayings that I've never heard. I'm from southern DR so I only know so much of the lingo.

I still saved that page for future reference though.:lol

Fake edit:
What is this idea that early facial hair indicates a short lifespan? I started growing a beard when I was sixteen. Should I be afraid?

Hello Sir, I'm David from Whitey, Whitey and Whitey and I just wanted to politely tell you that warm 7up is our drink now. Give us 75 years and we'll give you limited access to warm 7up again but we'll be expecting gratitude.

Cheers.

My family used sprite not 7up.

You know one of the things i love most about Hispanics is the differences yet similarities between cultures. I went to a Latin school and it was so cool learning about other countries... to this out of all the ones i enjoyed learning about my favorite was Ecuador. I love when people have to get accustomed to Dominican Spanish (which happened every year in my HS, new kids having to learn what certain slang meant)

People always say that Dominican Spanish is the hardest to understand, but I've always had trouble understanding Spaniards. It's something about their accent.

The Spaniards have a real nice way of using the language if you ask me. I've always understood what they say pretty well and the ladies who speak with that accent sound nice. It's a real soft accent with fewer highs and lows.

Dominican spanish is pretty sharp though. Sometimes it feels like a standoff when a lot of Dominicans are talking to each other. It makes conversations fun though.:lol

Fake edit:
My family was partial to the Ginger ale for upset stomachs and some slight discomfort. Never used sprite that often.

^It's not that I think they don't sound nice! Quite the opposite, in fact. It's just I don't understand what the hell they're saying.

:lol My family was actually fine with whatever soda as long as it came in a green casing. Lots of Canada Dry for example, although it's all 7up or Esprite to us.:lol

My girlfriend is Spaniard and half the time I can barely make out what she is saying.

Their accent are the hardest to understand and then on top of it, they use different words compared to hispanic/latino spanish.

For example, I would use "piso" and she would use "suelo".

hispanics love lulz confirmed?

:lol :lol :lol

hmm the frosted flakes i eat often are useful.

sometimes i get annoyed because i look younger than what i'm supposed to look like. women prefer older looking guys and i look younger than my brother (he's younger by 4 years)

at least i know i won't look too old compared to everyone else when i hit 60. my dad is 65 and looks like 50.

btw, my mom used to buy vaporub but one day the stores stopped carrying it and she switched to a different one named "cepol". it smells similar and stuff.

my grandma used to buy ginger ale when someone was sick at home years ago.

damn.....

holy shit even wiki has it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominican_Spanish

* room – Spanish: habitación, cuarto – Dominican also: aposento (a Spanish archaism also meaning "chamber")

* good, fine – Spanish: bien – Dominican slang: tató (shortened from "está todo (bien)")

* wild – Spanish: agresivo/-a – Dominican also: guapo/-a

* passion fruit – Spanish: maracuyá – Dominican also: chinola

* papaya / pawpaw – Spanish: papaya – Dominican also: lechoza

* money – Spanish: dinero – Dominican slang: cuartos (this is an archaism seldom used in standard Spanish also)

* a bit – Spanish: un poco – Dominican slang: un chin/chin chin (possibly of Arawak or African origin)

* coach / bus – Spanish: autobús – Dominican also: guagua (this term is also used in the Canary Islands (Spain), Cuba, Puerto Rico; it originated in the Canary Islands)

* motorbike taxi – does not exist in all Spanish-speaking countries – Dominican Spanish: motoconcho

* scooter – Spanish: ciclomotor – Dominican also: pasola (a genericized term deriving from a trademark)

* jeep / SUV – Spanish: (vehículo) todoterreno – Dominican also: yipeta (a genericized term deriving from a trademark).

* farm/agricultural field – Spanish: granja – Dominican also: conuco (Arawak origin), finca

* convenience store – Spanish: tienda de ultramarinos – Dominican also: colmado (this is an archaism seldom used in Spanish also), and pulpería

* trash can – Spanish: bote de basura – Dominican also: zafacón (used also in Puerto Rico; possibly a corrupted anglicism of safety can)

* tree – Spanish: árbol – Dominican also: mata

* disposable diaper – Spanish: pañal desechable – Dominican also: Pamper (Many Spanish-speaking countries use this term, including in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and in Central America. It is also believed to be a genericized term deriving from a trademark.)

I'm sorry but laughing like:

"JAJAJAJAJA"

just sounds stupid.
And that's why it's important to remember that it's from a different language.

e.g. PUSE in Spanish is the preterite form for 'to put' and not a woman's vagina. If you can make that distinction, you can do the same with JAJAJA.

* wild – Spanish: agresivo/-a – Dominican also: guapo/-a

The fuck?

Just read through it. I know every single one of those with the exception of the word for golden flower.

It's also nice to see that we still use some of the words made by original inhabitants of the Island. I'm actually surprised because they're pretty commonly used by all Dominicans.

yeah i actually thought the same. I never knew that a lot of the words used today are taken from the original tainos :o

EDIT: HAH! i never realized that boche originally came from bullshit!

I was actually surprised by the origins of the word "yipeta". It kind of reminds me of the deep impacts the US has had on several cultures throughout South/East Asia.

Very cool indeed.

Menudo is good, but damn is pozole godly. The one my mother makes at least. And her enchiladas... and her sopes... and her carnitas... and her tinga... oh god I love her tinga... and am I ever glad she always makes my birthday memorable by always making me her mole. I just can't get enough.

Jet Grind Radio! said:

hijo de tu! i love menudo but i hate posole. if i'm forced to eat it then i'll only get meat and eat that.
