My brother actually. :lol

Plus, our families stick together and thus you basically live forever. The more women you have around, the longer you tend to live. It's like they have this regenerating life force. Men with daughters live five to ten years longer than men without and married men live longer than bachelors.

Also, when you get old and decrepit, your family keeps you around rather than shunting you into a home. I think Jewish families also exhibit the same behaviour with similarly boosted longevity.

Right on the money, as always.

I have a feeling it's got a little to do with the Vicks Vaporub (as mentioned) and the fact that we're only a generation removed from dire poverty and tropical disease. It's a tough combo - we've got the European resistance to things like colds and flus and the American resistance to cholera, malaria and dengue. An environment like that tends to toughen up the constitution (have you ever seen a Latino child with an athsma puffer?).

This is true. Latino families tend to stick together. Sometimes we'll have a lot of family members living together in the same house.

Oh and my fellow Hispanic-Americans, don't take this as an excuse to adopt unhealthy lifestyles, just because we on average tend to live longer than whites and blacks. :lol

What other ethnicity group has the more mixed races?
Maybe that's why we live longer? More diverse genes in our pool? :lol

Edit

This!!! I'm so addicted to Vicks Vaporub!! Goddammit! :lol

It must be the warm 7up we drink when we get sick. I hear it's the bubbles that really helps.
Hello Sir, I'm David from Whitey, Whitey and Whitey and I just wanted to politely tell you that warm 7up is our drink now. Give us 75 years and we'll give you limited access to warm 7up again but we'll be expecting gratitude.

Cheers.
Dave.

I think that it is more cultural and related to the fact of having very close, extense families that helps to take care of the sick helps a freaking lot, creating a "hand made" safety net (there are several studies in Spain regarding this, and family care keeps off a huge burden out of the social security expenses). Also, don't treating elders as disposable waste as the anglo saxons do surely helps in order to live longer, but that's a subjetive opinion of mine.

Not surprising, all that running back and forth across the border is great cardiovascular.

But seriously, Asians tend to have a long life expectancy as well, so maybe there's something in the rice?

True. White people dont eat rice unless its wraped in sushi or they foget to ask to le ave it out of burritos

Not so fast there Hispanics. The UCLA study in the OP mentions nothing of Asians.

Disclaimer: I didn't read the entire article.

The thing is, Asian-Americans are also highly educated and pretty well-off. That's why their longer life expectancy isn't a "paradox."

White people eat plenty of Chinese food, which often has rice. Dunno what you're talking about.

It's because of the manual labor they perform until the age of 70.

Not sure if you're serious but my dad is in his late 60's and he works hanging sheetrock. He looks like he's in his early 50's and is pretty healthy. I think having a positive (carefree?) attitude has to help somewhat.

I work in construction and there have been a lot of studies done on carpenters, laborers, etc on life expectancy after retiring.... it's not good. Once the physical labor stops, health declines very quickly.

It's supposed to sound like "hah" not "jah" FYI. It's just non one bothers putting on the accent. But I do agree it's kinda dumb.

I'm Hispanic too (Dominican), but I'll probably die early because I got facial hair really early :/.

Don't feel so bad. No matter how old you are, you'll still be able to play Little League!

That's interesting I've never heard of that but my dad really is healthy he goes to the doctor regularly and the doctor says he's in great health. Even when he is not working he's working around the house.

Could it be that familialism and religiousness, major parts of Hispanic culture, are actually good for your health?

Yeah I definitely think this plays a role. I notice my family and people in Vietnam live a lot longer. I have so many relatives that are in their 80s. Family structure and togetherness over there is a lot like the Hispanics as well as a lot of other Asian countries. Maybe America should adopt that instead of the typical nuclear family or the idea of you're eighteen now get the fuck out.

Ummm... that's the way it sounds in Spanish. That would be as dumb as saying ""HAHAHA" sounds stupid to a Spanish speaker because the H is silent in Spanish.

Stealth edit, wrong quote!

Both of you don't have to feel alone because I'm Dominican too (3/4 Dominican, 1/4 Cuban). :D I think it is the Vapor Rub and the rice and beans that's doing us good also the platano (plantain). Plus the family must stick together ideology although I barely see my family save for my 2 bros and my mother but that's because I live with them. Off topic but does anyone get annoyed when people on the internet say for example "k lo k?" I hate when people don't type in proper Spanish because it's the internet. The only downside to being Latino/Hispanic is that we get racially profiled easily because most of us are brown skinned.

when i use to skate most of my buddies where white and most of them broke shit...where me and this other guy(dont remember his name) where Mexican and didnt. we clearly have the more superior stronger bodies.

i bet its all the hard labor. white people sit back while we build roofs, driveways, tile floors, drywall, and yard work. (all things iv done with papa except for the yard work)

same! my whole family calls it that, just like they call polo shirts poloche :lol

Concerning the post about running across the border and all that....

Well, I find it ironic that the fastest runners on the base I'm stationed at are Mexicans, myself included.

My friend Mario has the record for fastest mile at 5:11. :D

But it does...

Same reason having a strong support network extends your life. Same reason having a hobby or activity you're passionate about extends your life. Same reason cancer patients who have something to "fight for" are more likely to pull through than those who don't.

Hope and optimism are powerful things.
i can buy that. no matter where it comes from hope and optimism is good for you

I think my family's the only one that calls Vapor Rub "mentol." Hell even I call it mentol. I think"poloche" is the universal word for shirt in crazy Dominican Spanish since everyone calls it that or sneakers "tenis," it's hilarious. :lol
