The Hispanic Paradox

pardon my ignorance but what country of origin are Hispanics? Hispaniola?

Hispanics mean "From the Spanish".

Spain = Spanish

All the parts of the world that the Spanish conquered, and therefore now speak Spanish are called Hispanics.

Hispanic FTW! I grew up pretty white bread but all of my family has aged quite well. My grandparents both lived into their 90's in Chile. Although my grandmother was Mapuche (South American native people) so hopefully that means I get a double dose of longevity!

Any thoughts on Latino vs Hispanic? I go back and forth since I have both Spanish and native ancestry.

Oh man! I still get that sometimes, and I'm in my thirties. :lol :lol More like "don't take a shower after you eat because you'll get cramps". Kinda surprised at how many latino-GAF there are. I think I may be one of the few, if any, Puerto Ricans here.

OMG. I've gotten this a lot. :lol

I imagine this is the case for most Hispanics/Latinos. Hell go back a few generations in my family tree and you'll find some Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese

I'm Caucasian from European descent, family has lived in America since the 1700's. Our family always had us drink ginger ale when we were sick "Drink clear liquids". Even the doctors would say that. I tried explaining this to my coworkers and they were like "Why would you drink soda when your sick!?"

BTW my Grandfather is dark as hell, like he's darker than a lot of Hispanics are :lol. If I didn't stay inside most of the time I'd be like that too.

Nah.

Bring it on!

Can any Dominican here who actually grew up on the island tell me the historic reason why we got so many wild dogs everywhere? And why people are generally assholes to them?

Kaiser Dämmerung said:
That too, but as a kid in Dominican Republic I was much more afraid of encountering "Un Bacá" :lol
dude there are so much things that you can get scared of...
la Ciguapa, la llorona, el cuco... oh lawd D:

because a lot of times people don't care for them like they do here.... "perros viralatas" is what they call em. A lot of time when Dominicans come here they say that people treat animals better then people. They see them as wild animals a lot of times, another reason is that a lot of the time street dogs have diseases.

OMFG I forgot about la Ciguapa! The dominican banshee! With long flowing black hair and feet facing backwards :lol God I love my country's supernatural creatures.

@El Sloth: There's basically no animal control and/or shelter services, so they're treated like common pests. Fixing your pets is either too expensive or not popularized by pet owners. Hell, I have yet to see a Dominican family take their dogs or cats regularly to a vet. Shit's expensive here in the states, imagine how many Pesos that sets you back.

Basically I've seen that there's no difference between a stray dog and a cockroach over there. Some people even kill them or run them over for sport. Horrifying.

Edit:
OMFG x 2 - Reading more about la Ciguapa, I found out the creature she originated from actually appears as a demon in Shin Megami Tensei (Churel) :O

Come, don't forget El Chupa Cabras :lol

My grandfather was half Spaniard, one quarter Turkish, on quarter Lebanese. :lol What a fucking mess.

They're not hispanics, but a lot Filipinos that I've met have Spanish surnames.
Spanish was the official language of government at some point.

Thread's been great. I'm having a good laugh relating to all these abuelita remedies. Here in my state there's an indigenous tribe (Tarahumara) and they sell all kinds of herbs for natural remedies; I usually get yerbabuena and hierba de la vibora in case I have a stomachache, just like grandma taught me.

In the subject of health and the Tarahumara, here's a snippet of a lengthy Men's Health article regarding them:

Men'sHealth said:
When it comes to the top 10 health risks facing American men, the Tarahumara are practically immortal: Their incidence rate is at or near zero in just about every category, including diabetes, vascular disease, and colorectal cancer. Age seems to have no effect on them, either: The Tarahumara runner who won the 1993 Leadville ultramarathon was 55 years old. Plus, their supernatural invulnerability isn't just limited to their bodies; the Tarahumara have mastered the secret of happiness as well, living as benignly as bodhisattvas in a world free of theft, murder, suicide, and cruelty.

So how do they do it? How is it that we, in one of the most technologically advanced nations on Earth, can devote armies of scientists and terabytes of data to improving our lives, yet keep getting fatter, sicker, and sadder, while the Tarahumara, who haven't changed a thing in 2,000 years, don't just survive, but thrive? What have they remembered that we've forgotten?
Here's the link to the full article.

Of course this cannot be applied to hispanos in general, since the tribe maintains certain genetic --and cultural-- uniformity, but I guess it boils down to physical activity, a balanced diet, and a less stressful life overall what makes hispanos longevity gain a few valuable points. I personally don't believe religion plays a direct role in this. Indirect? sure. Practically anything plays an indirect role in your life's wealth. Being married? well, if I have a mexican wife cooking all sorts of goods and raising the kids I'm certain I'll get to 85 and die a happy man.

I always get depressed when I see 'em, especially in the capital. People seem to be so callous in the capital.

I agree. The harder life gets, people become more heartless. I left DR in the early 90's and it's so shocking to see how things have degraded as I've gone back over the years. Now I think twice about flying there :\

Daaamn. I'd love that.

This thread has made me really want some menudo :( I'm not even hispanic man, though people think I am. Maybe I'll age nicely.

it reopened as the UASD but it was originally Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino.

Yeah, it could be like 72 degrees at night here and moms' still be like "put on a jacket, it's cold". What?!

Also, this could just be a Puerto Rican thing, but did anybody ever get the penny on the forehead if you got the hiccups? I used to get that when I was young. It was that or a little piece of string wet with saliva on the forehead.

White dudes here in GAF should get with some mexican chick, make babies and assimilate our culture for longer livin.

I've always drunk soda when I was sick. First-generation American from European "descent" (I consider myself as European as American, I've lived back and forth on both sides of the pond), it must be a European thing.

This thread is so awesome. It made me remember that my grandma used to tell us to stay away from fire smoke, to avoid wetting our beds at night. I spent half my life trying to understand the biological basis of this saying. :lol

"¡Niño, quítate de ahí! ¡Te vas a miar!".
