Seriously though, why do people seem to like Thorin so much? Dude acts like a supercunt roughly 80% of the first film - something I was hoping had been resolved when he finally realised it by the end of the first chapter. Now this trailer shows that he's back at it again.

given that this movie seems to be ramping up the original/outside content:actual Hobbit story ratio even more, i fully expect There and Back Again to be 2 hours of random scenes from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and FanFiction.net with 15 minutes of Bilbo walking home

One of the going theories is that Thorin is succumbing to what's referred to as the "dragon sickness" after his various encounters with Smaug. Basically it causes someone to become obsessed with treasure and - by proxy - power. I have no idea if this'll be the case in the film, but it's a possibility. It would at least explain why Thorin goes back into asshole-mode after becoming bestest pals with Bilbo at the end of AUJ.

I liked the first one well enough, and I think it's only going to get better from here as we get to the points of The Hobbit that are actually what I wanted to see in the first place.
I know some people had issues with the first film but it was still a lot better than most of the other big blockbusters released that year. This looks to be a visual upgrade from the last film. Going to watch this in 48 fps, will all theaters carry it this time? Last time it was only in select theaters.

I would guess that there will probably be around double the number of HFR screenings this time around, since there was a considerable rush from theater chains to upgrade their projection tech in order to actually show the HFR 3D version last year. Now that it's been another year, there has been ample time for more theaters to upgrade.
Also, the fact that AUJ made $1 billion+ at the box office is probably incentive enough to offer more HFR 3D screenings.

Yeah, but the dude just acts like a cunt to Bilbo over and over again, when all Bilbo is trying to do is help him. Bilbo will save Thorin's ass - along with Thorin's entire company, and then Thorin will tell Bilbo to fuck off and leave them alone because he's a burden or some shit.

Yeah, most of the big Tolkien forums have gotten increasingly negative about the films since An Unexpected Journey was released. There were obviously always plenty of purists, but a lot of moderately pro-PJ fans have had a lot fewer nice things to say about him too. Which I'm actually kind of disappointed about because it means that the purist debates are a lot more one-sided and thus a lot less interesting this time around. :/

It's part of the reason why TheOneRing.net is one of the few Tolkien fansites I still bother reading on a fairly frequent basis. Yeah, it's pretty much dedicated to praising Jackson's films, but good Lord it's nice to interface with some optimistic Tolkien fans every once and a while. There's only so much pessimism I can take before I stop caring about what purists want from an adaption of one of Tolkien's works and just throw my hands up and say "I'm out".
Hell, even Dantes called the folks at the Barrow Downs some of the snobbiest Tolkien fans on the net.
I'm gonna say something that has gotten me tons of problems in Tolkien forums. The reason An Unexpected Journey wasn't as good as the LOTR movies is simple in my eyes. PJ didn't turn into a hack. He didn't half-ass it. The source material is simply worse. That's it. Everything I see people point out as bad about this movie I have seen people use against the LOTR ones. That's the way PJ directs. There were just fewer of them because the books they were based on are much better than The Hobbit.
Disclaimer: This comes from a Tolkien fan that thinks The Silmarillion is easily his best work.
It's been forever since I read the Hobbit or had it read to me, but I thought in the book he was never very fond of Bilbo, and there was only a bit towards the end where the dwarves got nicer to him...and then yes, Thorin got
dragon sickness/greed/whatever with treasure
and turned into more of a jerk at the end.
As for the movie in general...it's so weird to see Legolas and the elf lady and random stuff. The three Lord of the Rings movies were some of my favorite movies EVER, and I have a great deal of respect for Peter Jackson and everyone involved for those movies, extended editions and otherwise.
I really like 48 fps for smooth landscape pans and hope to see that again too.
All that said...the first Hobbit movie was probably enjoyable enough for me, though it had some very silly parts, but the visual design feels weird to me in the whole series. I felt like the LOTR movies had scenes of awesome natural grandeur, but the Hobbit movies have very CGI-esque backdrops. It lets scenes use unusual camera angles that they couldn't otherwise do very well, but I miss the older movies which I seem to recall looking more realistic. However, that could just be nostalgia and time talking.
I'll still see the new movie of course, probably at least twice this December I hope.
Jeez, this looks so terrible. PJ's movies just keep looking worse and worse. He went from imaginative and inventive to movies that look like bad videogame cutscenes. I swear even the visual effects look worse than they did in 1999.
Cool that the trailer makes it look like the movie focuses on my favorite Hobbit characters, Legolas and Kate, kicking ass in those iconic battles that really made the book. And I'm glad they keep coming up with new things for the dwarves to fall off of; I was worried there would be fewer crumbling/collapsing things for them to tumble from this time out, but it looks like my fears are allayed for another year.

I've been reading the Hobbit with my kids. Thorin is skeptical of Bilbo but never hostile or even rude. It's amped up to increase the drama in the film, like every other thing Jackson touches from Tolkien.
We just got back to reading The Hobbit this week, after a many months hiatus. The first film killed their interest in the story so hard we stopped reading it together (I read chapters out loud to them at bed time). Now that they've mostly forgotten the movie I got them interested in how the story ended (we left off with Smaug heading for the lake town) and are going again.
There's a way Jackson could have set this film in the same universe as his LotR films without gorging the films with content from the appendices or his ass. Just put it in the same setting and enrich it around the edges. My kids see these trailers and wonder WTF is going on - it's not the story they're hearing me read them. So do I, really.
