The "I was wrong" thread of eating crow: E3 edition

So E3 has come and gone...what were you totally wrong about... predictions or otherwise

-I was convinced Sony was going to have a very similar used games and DRM system to Microsoft....pretty glad I was wrong

Me too. I for one welcome our new Sony overlords.

I thought Sony would go DRM, although I think they backed off from that policy.

I thought XB1 would be pimping a lot more Kinect.

I thought Nintendo would try harder to salvage WiiU.

I expected Sony to do disc based DRM with whatever that NFC tech they had patented was.

I aslo expected a price drop for the Vita or at least the GODDAMNED MEMORY CARDS.

Expected a new Metroid title.

I had no idea Microsoft could so thoroughly alienate their established fanbase. The pricing is brutal.

I still want a new Ground Control, but Massive's next project looks like it will be a success.

The Oculus Rift 1080p prototype arrived way sooner than I was expecting.

If you look purely at value, XO is like 10% of what it could have been priced at!

I really thought MS would get rid of the negative PR image at E3. I didnt think they would change anything that they had announced but that they would show a bunch of great games, Sony would follow suit with the DRM (or at the worst say nothing about it), they would have a reasonable price and gamers would just forget it and lap it all up like Diablo or SimCity.

Sometimes crows are tasty. :P

I feel pretty good, as I was spot on with most of my predictions besides...

- I too thought Sony was going to have similar DRM as Microsoft on the PS4.

- I projected a $450 price tag for the PS4.

- I never thought that the XBoner would be $499.

Final fantasy versus was revealed- So glad I was wrong! Same with KH3.

Mario Wii U would be something like Mario 64 - So, so wrong. Not glad per se.

I'm surprised there aren't more people in here saying how they just knew Sony wouldn't charge for MP.
When Sony said they were making a big effort improving their network for PS4, I figured online pay was going to go behind the pay wall. PSN+ seemed like it was building in that direction already.

I was sure Sony was going to go $450 or $500. so I'm really glad I was wrong.

Same here. With the real price being $399, this is some of the most tasty crow I've ever eaten. That being said, by the time I get out of the door with the console, a game, and PS+ for online, I will have spent $500+ anyway, but oh well. That's still much better than XBone, and the forced Kinect 2 situation...

thought for sure PS4 was releasing with Eye and $499.

Pretty sure they puled the plug on that recently but I still will eat the crow on that one...

Yeah, think that was one of the things Cboat got wrong, though he did say not confirmed. I was honestly shocked. Major disappointment for me.

Also what happened to Hawken being XBone exclusive? Thought that was a really good coup for MS.

According to Adam Boyes on Giant Bomb's last E3 podcast, the final price was put together pretty much the day of the conference. It seemed like they probably had a $450-$499 sku ready to go along side the $399.

As most people here, I was surprised by Sony charging for online in PS4. But the trade-off is not that dramatic, if you ask me.

On a related note, OH BOY can't I wait until the people from the XBONE satisfaction thread find this.

"But DRM means cheaper games!"

Nothing really for me. Had some minor stuff I personally expected that we didn't see:

  • WiiU Price Drop (expected deluxe to just replace the basic)
  • Last Guardian
  • Halo 2 HD

Think that's it. Nothing major.

I'm surprised there aren't more people in here saying how they just knew Sony wouldn't charge for MP.

At least for me, it wasn't a thought in my mind. I would have said "no way" had I been asked, but honestly didn't even think about it beforehand.

I expected a Metroid or Metroid-like new IP game from Retro, that would push the hardware in a similar manner like Monolith Soft's X does. We got a SNES game instead.
Yeah yeah, i know, blah blah blah and i don't care.

I thought Nintendo would have had more aces up its sleeve (a new or unexpected 3rd party exclusive).

I did predict the fact that they would NOT drop the price. Yay me.

I think the MP paywall may have been a recent decision. I assumed it would remain free going forward into next gen - unfortunately not.

Major, non-obvious wrong:

- $399 price point for MS.
- Free online multiplayer for Sony.
- The Last Guardian resurrected and moved to PS4 (due to PS3 tech problems).

Major, non-obvious right:

- $399 price point for Sony, no camera bundled.
- No added DRM for disc-based games for Sony.

I was sure Retro would bring something impressive. DK will probably be a great game, but another platformer really isn't what they needed.

I gotta say I was dead wrong on Sony having a similar DRM policy to MS. I am glad they don't and do hope that the fallout from all this will make some changes on the MS side. Honestly, I think disc in drive offline play would be enough of a change.

Had PS4 at $349 and Xbone at $449 going in to E3 and was slightly off. Maybe a bit too optimistic there.

I did expect Sony not to implement any DRM though. They pretty clearly stated after the reveal in February, the PS4 would not require an Internet connection at all since they know it's not a given in rural areas and other countries. And without ze Internet a senseful DRM simply can not work. Plus, Shuhei said on Twitter when the #PS4NoDRM was in full swing that "DRM" is coming to the Vita, "DRM" actually being an abbreviation for some game in this case. That comment would've been way to rude coming from Shuhei so I figured they are joking around at Sony HQ, knowing the PS4 is not gonna employ any DRM.

I thought for sure Beyond Good & Evil 2 would finally make an official appearance. I excuse myself from crow, though, because I naturally become delusional about that whenever any major conference rolls around.

One wonders if Sony are going to decide their price on the day depending on what MS say in the morning. If the xbo is $449-$499 then I suspect that $399 wil be the price. If MS go for $399 then maybe Sony will plump for $349.

It just seems to me that Sony are trying to win back the hearts and minds of the core* crowd that they lost to MS in 2005-08 and a more powerful yet cheaper console will be mana to those enthusiasts.

According to Pachter a Sony insider said they couldn't do $349. So I was wrong there.

Not surprised about the people guessing Sony'd unveil similar DRM, I'm just glad cautious optimism paid off.

One area where I'm eating crow: I was expecting the X1 conference wouldn't show many exclusives I'd be interested in, but at least half of them were games that are appealing to me! Not enough to ignore the DRM and get sooner than later at least, the price point sealed THAT, but still!

I thought Microsoft would undercut the PS4 with the Xbone's price. Wrong!
I thought PS4 would have some form of anti-used game DRM. Wrong!
I thought EA would revive the Online Pass as a direct result of the above. Apparently, that's wrong as well.

I didn't think either side would say a price, though Microsoft saying their's first was the most shocking part (since it left them even more open than they already were) and I thought Sony would have some variety of DRM on PS4.
