I think it's related to the multitask feature.

The multitask is not really a multitask. Basically it's a memory dump of the game in the moment that you close the app, and loading the memory image when you click again in the game.

And if you have played Infinity Blade, Rage HD and some other big games, you can imagine how big those memory dumps are. Simply close any "multitask" app, and syncronize again.

That's a solid theory, but like I said in my earlier post when I did some looking around the net about the problem it seems to have existed for 2 years and multitasking hasn't been around that long.

not quite. it's been there since way before iOS 4.x.

I've noticed that it can actually drop in size if you're loading up new media or apps on the device for the first time.

---

As for the "sync error" stuff, I've experienced bad syncs that have caused the "app" segment to be merged with the "other" segment, making "other" seems huge. but that only lasts for one sync. it then goes back to normal sizes.

I've always just figured it was apps that use other space for storage, like how Stanza can store books on the device, or Guitar Hero can have DLC and the sort.

I imagine it's a combination of that sort of thing, saves and other miscelaneos data but it certainly should never take up nearly 2GB. The fact restoring the phone to a backup while retaining saves etc works pretty much confirms it can collect junk data.

I'm sure there are loads of people who have this issue that aren't even aware of it because of the oh so helpfully vague "other" tag it's given.

It,s also temp space for installing apps. I remember when I was installing a 1.5 gb gps app, it took 3gb data. When I turned my device off and then back on via Golding the sleep wake, the 'other' data went away.

Horror Vacui 2

Came across this on the Creative Application blog. It's an abstract 2-player strategy game built on the idea that nature abhors a vacuum. Thought I'd put the word out since there seems to be a lot of boardgame-heads in this thread. Oh, its also universal.

Well, I always had small "other" section, but it's because of game DLC or data, browser, and other information from Stanza, etc.

But when that grow until nearly 2Gb was when I bought my iPhone 4 (with multitasking), instead of 0'2 Gb.

I just confirmed my theory (sorta). I had 1'6 Gb of Others. I took out all the games from the multitask, turned it off and on, and now it's 0'36. That now has a lot of sense, because I have Stanza with some books, and around 100 games (so a lot of saves). If it's not because of this, is memory lost in the opening-closing of apps, that is resetted when you restart the phone.

Wait, did I just finish Chaos Rings in 5 hours? :lol

Oh my, that was rather short, even for a mobile RPG.

Should I play the other scenarios? Does anything change at all? I actually quite liked the bizarre story, is there a "true" ending from playing all of the scenarios?

Too bad the game is far too easy and very light as far as RPG elements goes. Still, I enjoyed and I might play the other scenarios if you guys tell me it's worth it.

So, there's this video of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 running on the iPhone. If you look closely, you can see that something's different about it. Smoother animations, zooming camera and so on.

Then there's this preview.

Visually, as you can see from our video, Ultimate Mortal Kombat is one smooth customer. All the characters have been remodelled in 3D for a more detailed look, but without changing what we know and love, and the frame rate is as smooth as the animation.

Weird, isn't it? I wonder if the project is somehow related to the rumored HD Arcade Kollection.

EDIT:

No, you haven't.

Yes.

Yeah, same deal as Carcassone. The price will go up when the universal update hits.
Any time frame on that? I won't ever play it til it's updated so if it's gonna be months I may as well wait.

Yes.
Ah, that's good to know. Could you elaborate a little more (without spoiling of course)? :)

I mean, doesn't the story change accordingly to the scenario? Since
each scenario makes for a different surviving couple. Do the dungeons and bosses change at all?

No idea, unfortunately. It's one of the rare iPhone games that looks decent on the iPad as is, though. I've had it for a while.

The story assumes that multiple versions of universe exist. I'll leave it at that.
The dungeons don't change much (aside from the order you go through them), but some events and battles do. Each playthrough gives you a better understanding of the story as well - the characters have more secrets and are more
intimately connected with the Ark
than it appears. Besides,
their personalities are a bit different in each universe.
. It's worth playing through again in my opinion.

Anyway, I'm assuming you loaded your save after finishing the game...?
If not, do so - another dungeon has been unlocked.

Once you beat the game with all characters,
the true boss appears - you'll figure out who or what it is across multiple playthroughs if you haven't already.
.

Even then, once you reach 100% completion, there's
another secret boss you can tackle.

There's a lot of repetition, but it's a long ass game ;)

EDIT:

There's also point in replaying dungeons after finishing the game -
secret bosses appear thorough dungeons, and you get each character's best equipment for beating them.

Interesting what is Shadow Era? Can't seem to find it on the app store. Culdcept would be awesome on iOS though speaking of CCGish games.

If you've got Facebook, there's a single player beta you can log into as an app. It's pretty fun, nice and streamlined. One of the few non-crud games on there, actually. Card art is no slouch, which is a plus.

Ok, I'll continue playing then. Thanks for the detailed explanation! :D

holy shit at that mortal kombat 3 port.

There is something really weird with the Lui Kang sprite used in the video... First off, the Lui Kang sprite's skin is darker than the one in the real game, also that Lui Kang feels way bulkier than the normal Kang..

I wonder what it is.

Mortal Kombat hitting the iPhone just sort of turns GAF, Liu Kang Baking A Pie and Kano on the Phone into one big cosmic meta thing.

God, is there anyone else in here who just can't stand on screen d-pads and buttons?

Granted, I do have pretty big thumbs...

mostly, I hate them. sometimes they aren’t awful and if the game doesn’t require precision I might be able to deal with it.

but seeing that MK game with all those buttons on the screen? yuck.

I played all the way through Yoshi's Island with on screen controls. You get used to them.

It keeps me from getting games like Mega Man 2, or any other game that requires quick, precise action, because I am always missing the sweet spot, or hitting the wrong button or direction.

For games like Shining Force though, the pace is slow enough that you can take your time with it, and I don't mind it that much. I still prefer a tactile responsive control though.

I'm not a big fan of onscreen dpad/analog sticks and the like. Honestly it puts me off a game if I find out that's how it's controlled.

The lack of any feedback really just makes things hard to judge and mostly a nightmare to control as a result.

Personally I think if you're going to make an iPhone game you should tailor it to the platform not just shove some buttons onscreen and hope that's good enough. Infinity Blade is an excellent example of building the game for the device, while I do think it has some control issues I'd still take it over any virtual dpad/stick/buttons game.

Generally they suck, but Pix n' Love Rush is a great game in spite of the on screen controls. And it requires some pretty precise controls but it just feels so good and it's very rare that I miss a button press (but it does happen). I wish that game were on the DS or PSP so I could see what scores I could get when I never mess up :p.

My thoughts exactly! It's like the PSP all over again. Games like Killzone Liberation showed that any existing franchise can be adapted with success to any platform!

The iPhone, having a touchscreen and good graphic capabilities, would make interesting and fun versions of some existing games, imo!

Gravity Hook HD just got updated. Retina display, Game Center, multitasking, and "improved gameplay, now with more fun!"

Holy shit at MK3. If it controls as well as SF4, I'm in.
