The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

It means you can't copy games to it...

With the old version you could just use iTunes to transfer a zipped game over and unzip it using iDOS.

so how would it work now for us new users? :-/
Theoretically you'd be screwed for adding new stuff, unless your device was jailbroken, but even then not gauranteed (you'd be able to transfer whatever you want to the phone when Jailbroken, wether or not the App recognizes the data I wouldn't know).

Really wish I got in on that when it first launched.

LotR: Defense (if you're a big LotR fan)
Leave Devil Alone (PvZ clone)
iBomber Defense (WW2 inspired, towers need repairs, a "man's man" TD)

I didn't know about these, I just got the free versions of the latter two, how is LotR?

There's apps that can access data without jailbreaking (like iPhone Explorer). If the app still looks for that stuff (like if he only cut out the iTunes storage access) and you knew the file structure it might be possible to add in stuff through there.

But that's just a theory until someone actually tries it out.

Secret of Mana always crashes if I need to reload after I've died, so annoying. The game can't load if I'm playing music anymore either. Not sure if it's because my touch is 2nd gen or just faulty coding on their part.

I don't really understand how the iPhone 4 doesn't have massive fillrate issues with games, since it uses the same GPU as the 3GS... I heard something about iPhone 4's CPU not being underclocked and being much faster though, does this mean (because it's a system-on-a-chip) that its GPU also runs much faster? Maybe it just has a much higher clockrate, compensating for it having the same feature set. Devs?

It's something I've been lost on too since it was used on the iPad as well with more pixels and less RAM (vs iPhone 4) on top of that. I have no clue about the GPU clock, but for the CPU side the 3GS is 600mhz, iPad is 1ghz, and 4 is 800mhz iirc. With a quick search for the GPU speed I'm seeing 100, 150, and 200 mentioned for the 3GS...so I'm guessing no one has a clue.

Yeah... All I can think is just that the iPhone 4's GPU must have a significantly higher clockrate.

Also, guys! Dungeon Defenders is $0.99 atm!
(edit: and the new update seems to bring tons of drastic improvements)

Is it worth it?

Not sure yet, haven't had time to try it out. But for a buck and given the improvements, even with its misgivings a lot of people still seemed to like it and it seems like one of those very original and unusually high production value games on iOS, so I grabbed it.

It's actually a decently presented TD game, with not great animation but decent presentation. You can replay levels on different difficulty settings, there's all the LotR characters with special abilities, and there's even a mini-story between levels, that basically follows the movie. You can set up barricades to alter the enemies path (but it's not an annoying build 100 towers to create a path TD), and level up your heros which gives them powers to use against the waves if you'd like.

I only played the first two or three levels so far, but what I saw seemed decent enough. Saving the rest of it for a little while longer (and it got a few performance updates since I bought it, so generally I'll wait to play newer titles 3-6 months so most of the big updates happen before I play them, rather than after).

Played around with the Lite version of Dungeons & Such due to this thread and was hooked for a solid 45 min. It plays sort of like a poor man's Etrian Odyssey. Plunked down the $3 for the full - Fun stuff.

Any good tower defense x rpg style games?

Like being able to level/distribute skills and units and every level not being a completely blank slate.

I just played Legends of Elendria: The Frozen Maiden which I got for free. Was really simple but I liked the levelling and skill distribution of the game.

Also any Elite beat agents clone?

Have you played Defender Chronicles already? It has different hero units with skills you level that affect your armies power, but due to the nature of the genre, carrying over armies would destroy balance so levels start from scratch (but are actually quite well varied in strategies needed to survive them). There's like 5 difficulty levels for each map and a large VA story (for a TD game), with tons of items to purchase (and skills to enhance your units, and actual units) and the higher difficulty settings are all but impossible without getting proper leveled stats and equipment.

We should figure out a way to send our characters to each other as mercs, if possible.

Is there a difference between the ipad and ipod version?

All the reviews I read is that the ipad versus looks just like the ipod version in 2x mode. (The ipad version is not even full screen). The ipad version cost 3x the ipod version though.

Seems to be high-res with new units:

In addition, iPad version comes with exclusive features such as brand new units like the Lizardman, Sentinal, Paladin and the Marksman, while some of the existing units have been improved. Of course, graphics is also hi-res, optimized to look better on the iPad.

I only have an iPhone right now, so I can't say for sure, but the game delivers even more content than that flash-based Gemcraft game linked above imo, so it's a steal at $3 or $1. Unless you play it for like 50+ hours you'll never have to worry about finishing it. I think on the official forums people have put like over 200 hours in to leveling and playing it.

This is going to sound stupid but I'm pretty amazed by how much that actually looks, sounds, and plays like Dead Space. There doesn't seem to be many compromises made at all.

unless it's like a 1 hour game

So according a recent Touch Arcade news article, the updated iDOS emulator app with additional control schemes (comes with 6 freeware/shareware titles pre-installed) and other improvements that is back on the App Store for free, is still open, and you can load dos games in to it simply by copying them into the app folder with a freeware program.

Sounds like if you missed it before, make sure you grab it now, and if you want the nicer looking joystick interface for playing games, you can update without needing to be jailbroken! :)

Confirmed that you can use iPhone Explorer (free, no JB required) to add new games to the new version of iDOS.

I was reticent to upgrade iDos but now it's updated.

Not really. Unless they significantly improved UI and smoothened out the frame rate, you should just wait till they put the game on PC.

Well it is just 99 cents instead of $4.99, and they have said UI improvements are coming down the line and this update added pets (which was one of the bigger things the iOS port was lacking), more levels and a big performance boost, so it may be worth grabbing now at 99 cents, and putting it off til the next update if the UI bothers you, incase there's no sale then. Unless you just wait till the next inevitable 99 cent sale after these improvements are actually made, which is probably smarter.

I've tried that program and half the time it starts to tell me directory can't be found :-/

A small suggestion. Could we start putting the name of the game we are talking about in the post title? Particularly when there's a lot of quoting going on, that sometimes spans more than 1 page. It would make it a lot easier to follow discussions on multiple games at once.

For example I have no idea what game you're talking about (and would like to know).

He's talking about Dungeon Defenders

Free Windows/Mac program.
Works on iPhones with or without Jailbreaks.

Ok, I downloaded and installed it. When I load it up, it just has two blank panes. I hit the "refresh" green button, and the program crashes with an exception.

How are you supposed to use this program? I have my phone plugged in through USB...

EXACTLY my point.

Fair enough, I didn't do it intentionally and apologize for the confusion, but I'll try and drop the name of the app I'm discussing if it isn't in the quote. I can see how it can be confusing if you don't backtrack through the quotes, especially since both games are 99 cents, but Dungeon Defenders and Defender Chronicles are two pretty different TD games.

Even the names are confusing enough, luckily we don't have Dungeon Chronicles and Defender Defenders games in the mix too!

Don't really know.
I've never used it.
Good luck!

No worries. I just used you as an example, but was hoping it could become standard practice. The bold name of the game in the post title really would be a big help to follow discussion along.

Just found this game while searching for a decent RTS, it's called Space Harvest:

Looks like fun, can't wait to get out of work and play it. It's universal too. If you watch the youtube vidja that I posted above, it looks like a combination of base building and RTS/resource management all wrapped up in eboy-esque hotness.

Thought I'd let you guys know.

Looks really good! A bit pricey to suck, so give us some feedback!

Best arcade racing game for iPad? Asphalt 6, NFS hot pursuit, NFS shift, ridge racer all look ok but not fantastic. Also important is how they drive - not a huge fan of tilt to steer on iPad. Already have real racing but want something a bit more arcadey

I like hot pursuit quite a bit. Doesn't handle all that well, but was fairly engaging - I played through about 97% of it so it must've had something. Compared to about 2% of real racing. Still need to get into that.

I got hot pursuit for 99c, though.
