The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

Not open for further replies.
As a 3GS owner, I'm not liking the retina-updates where my apps are going through enormous changes in size.

The Oregon trail app, which was originally 343.5 MB (according to Appshopper), has expanded to 1.17 GB...

Had to delete 4-5 other apps to make room for this.

Sorry. =( I was stoked about Oregon Trail, I beat it yesterday after the update - wish it had game center though.

I've talked to the guy with the broken leg and I know I should follow the path to the house on the cliff but what should I do there ? I can't enter. : |

Yeah, I picked this up when it was free and have played it a decent amount and I'm really impressed. For my tastes, this is the first iphone game that is must have and is not brought down by being on a phone at all. The graphics, gameplay, writing feel just as good as any PC adventure game and the controls are fantastic (as opposed to some of the other iphone adventure games that make me wish they were on PC with a mouse).

For comparison, I picked up Hector: Badge of Carnage ep1 for $4 a week prior and it's a much worse P&C adventure game in every aspect imo.

what? I have the latest update with retina display and it's only 343.6 MB

edit: holy crap it is 1.17 GB on the ipod

how is it more than 3x the size compared to the file on my computer o_O

That is totally unacceptable. Fucking absurd.

Besides what TMO posted (I pretty much agree with everything on that list but with Angry Birds - which is beloved by the whole world, so I don't think my opinion counts - and the fact that I don't get the love for iOS' sterile version of Dead Space), these are my MUST HAVE games:

SWORD & POKER II - part rpg, part Puzzle Quest, part Poker, ALL AWESOME.
This game keeps on giving, thank for telling me about it guys! Lovely art as well, same device multiplayer.
Game is packed and keeps adding mechanics and strategies into the game.

Flick Kick Football - flick you finger to score a goal.. Is that simple. Or is it?!
Sooo good, it took some time to grow in me, but damn I'm addicted now, probably my most played game.
Took me 5 days to "get it", been playing it for two months straight now, what a bargain.

Super Stick Golf - think a 2D plane Zany Golf, with so much content to keep you busy for weeks and polished like a Nintendo console game.

Dodonpachi Resurrection - perfect port of Cave's bullet hell shmup, one of iOS's shiniest gem.

Bit Trip Beat: perfect remix of Gaijin Games' Wiiware masterpiece and is crazily being sold for a pittance!

Mad Skills Motocross - ever heard of Excitebike? :)

Mega Jump - free, cute, addicting, perfect tilt controls

I Must Run - well, I absolutely love "run" games and this one (and the three below) is among the very best.
Run Like Hell - FREE run game
Canabalt - run game... the simplest, the original and maybe the best
Mirror's Edge - yet another run game, yet another fucking good one at that

Brokensword DC/Monkey Island SE 1/ Monkey Island SE 2

We have another update for this in the works which should make the multiplayer better, so keep an eye out for that in early March.

are there any cydia apps that would let me backup certain apps so if I do a restore I won't lose my game save?
AppBackup, it lets you back up individual apps in a tarball. You do have to backup the directory they're in before restoring the phone, but it beats Apple's terrible handling of individual app saves. It's fine if you keep the app on the phone indefinitely, then the iTunes restore should restore everything as it was from the last backup proper.

But if you want to remove a game because you aren't playing it anymore for whatever reason butg would like to keep your progress...you're screwed without AppBackup or manually doing it.

You can manually do it with iPhone Explorer, don't evne have to be jailbroken. It's just a pain is all.

Anyway, if you're JB, get AppBackup, the guys webpage for it is: http://me.srwz.us/iphone/appbackup

If you're not JB, get iPhone Explorer and do it manually (backup the Documents folder within the App's folder). http://www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/

Oh, niiice :)
I'd love to see push or in-game notifications when a friend on Gamecenter or Openfeint beat your score, me and my friends would play it even more than we do now.
Dunno how feasible is that, just throwing it out there ;)

Same here!
What's the best guide/tutorial to jb an iPad updated to the latest firmware and maybe one to see a "best of" of what's possible to do with a jb iPad?
I wonder what are the risks in jailbreaking...

Edit:
Secondapps sure doesn't make it easy to multiquote, sorry for the two posts guys

What on earth? I thought that iTunes was supposed to be able to figure out what hardware you had and put that version of the App onto it? IE, if you have a universal app, it's not going to put the iPad version of it on your iPhone. If you are using hardware that can't use the Retina graphics, why the fuck would they need to be stored on the device? That is BULLSHIT.

Picked up Phoenix Wright! Remember playing one of the DS titles but never really got hooked but I thought I'd give it another shot - and I'm glad I did!

PuzzleQuest 2 - does anyone else have experience with this? Its half priced now and I was going to get it (for ipad) but the comments on itunes says its pixellated and a bad port. Worth the $5?

Does anyone know how the good or bad the controls for the Sonic games are? Since Sega's sale ends tomorrow, I was thinking I might get one of them (Probably Sonic 2).

okay still not sure what caused that sandbox glitch but I figured out a fix

I just set up a new account using a different email and then signed out of that and in with my regular account and was no longer in sandbox mode :)

If you're okay with a bunch of filler between boards it's pretty good I think. It needs to be sped up a little, but it's a decent, be-it slower paced Match-3 game with a bunch of RPG elements.

The next update will patch in retina support, so it should look gorgeous, and it will have online multiplayer via Gamecenter, so that should add a bunch of value to it as well.

It just depends on how you feel about on screen d-pads. I personally have little problem with them.

Out of all the on-screen d-pads I've used, Sonic 2 has one of the best. I play Sonic 2 on my iPod quite a lot and I don't remember the last time the controls got in the way. The game is an awesome 5 minutes waster since I usually start it up and am satisfied playing through Emerald, Chemical, Aqua and getting my fix.

Seems to have worked for Wario too.

So all your Gamecenter stats are intact?

Nothing holding me back from jailbreaking my iPad tonight then.
I'm sure there's a simple guide DashK, I link yo it later on tonight.

Apparently people here are incurring the sandbox glitch without using Installous/AppSync to install pirated games, but I will note that elsewhere on the internet, the sandbox glitch is only occurring for people who do so.

So again, not that I'm accusing anybody of anything, I'm sure it's totally possible that there's an unrelated jailbreak bug that's only manifesting itself in a handful of NeoGAF users while thousands of pirates elsewhere on the internet all have it happen for the exact same reason and no one else seems to be reporting it.

Either way, though, the glitch in specific does not remove or damage anyone's Game Center data and it's not a reason to fear jailbreaking your device.

since I've gotten my iPod Touch at Christmas I have spent...

$217.07 (damn... I knew it was around $200 but didn't think I had actually gone over O_O) on iTunes on apps

man those 99 cent apps really add up after a while >_<

It boggles my mind that people would pirate games that only cost $0.99-$6.99 in most cases. If this is truly the case, I have zero sympathy.

I've probably spent somewhere around $170, but probably half of that has come from iTunes cards as gifts. I've become more selective on what I play and play those games often. Heck, I'm still going strong with Lumines, Pizza Boy, StarDunk, etc. And I'm just now returning to games that I only dabbled in before like Infinity Blade and Aralon.

Ok can anyone here help a New iPad owner.. I was so lucky to be in line for an iPad. Paid 90$ for a brand new 16Gb 3GS iPad.. and damn it is a nice piece of hardware..

But what apps/games should a new owner get..? the store is really big, and there is a lot to check. So what apps/games can Gaffers recommend a new iPad owner..?

yeah thankfully I'm pretty sure around $150 of mine at least came from itunes cards either as direct gifts or I got them using Best Buy gift cards/store credit/reward zone certs

edit: I think I'm done with app purchases for a while

at least until Wi-Fi Sync for Cydia becomes iPod Touch 4th gen compatible and MLB At Bat 2011 comes out >_>

I usually get a couple games per month. Lost Company will probably be the next one that's on the horizon. Although there are always games that come out of nowhere (League of Evil) that grab my attention. I'm sure we'll hear of some more great stuff at GDC.

They said they are looking at the $10 price point. And I meant to say the greatest management sim known to man. The Show is clearly the greatest baseball game ever.

Are you surprised? Tons of major releases later and Apple barely skims the surface of whats possible with their own hardware. Jailbreak apps are leagues ahead and always have been. I don't know how I'd live without SBSettings and Lockinfo.

It's out on the Mac App Store at 14.99 (I think). Looks pretty good but the lack of MLB license means I'll likely never play it.

If I may ask, what is the sandbox glitch? I just jb'd my ipad Saturday and should I run into the glitch, I want to know what not to post on the board since I'd rather people not imply I am a pirate.

That is the desktop version from last year I think. They are going to be significantly different but yeah, OOTP has never had the licenses.

Erm, unless you willingly install AppSync and Installous', you should have no problems unless this post is already implying you are pirating..

Considering I don't know what those are, I hope not. My point is that stumpokapow seems to be not so vaguely implying the folks seeing the glitch are pirates and if I run into the same issue I'd rather not get tarred similarly.
