The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

I would just like to say that Mega Jump is a lot of fun and it is utter, utter bullshit that you essentially have to pay a lot of money in order to get the bonuses and unlockables.

Also, NHL2K11 is on sale for $1.99 instead of $4.99 and is a pretty damn good hockey game.

Few things mentioned at the end of the last thread:

DODONPACHI OMG, on sale for the first few days.

Oregon Trail on sale for .99 right now.

Rhythm Spirit free today. Rahk said "It reminds me of a simplified Gitaroo Man. If you like rhythm games at all, definitely check it out. You can't go wrong for the price."

Shining Force on sale? .99 right now. Check out other Sega stuff too, might be a sale on others, like it looks like the Monkey Ball games are on sale too:
1 for $1.99, 2 for $2.99, 2: Sakura Edition for $3.99 - this one is iPad only and has iPad only content like more game modes and stuff I guess. I might pick it up just for Monkey Target.

R-Type is out...in Germany, probably a few more hours for other regions.

And yeah NHL2K11 is pretty good. There's a lite version if you want to see how it plays for a period. It says it doesn't work on the iPhone 3G but it does, albeit a bit chuggy. It's on par with some other sports games I've tried...choppy but playable. If anything it seems to be better since the game controls pretty well.

Last I tried it wouldn't let me gift stuff using my gift credit, that was a few years ago though (before the app store existed!) so things may have changed, or not. Could try emailing iTunes support if you can't find any clear info on it.

Amazing sales going on right now: Zombie Infection, Across Age & Dodonpachi Resurrection

However... I have a question about Dodonpachi... The game is extremely sluggish on my 3GS, to the point of being nearly uncontrollable, anyone else have this?

If anyone liked Pathpix I heartily recommend Piczle Lines - which is clone of the game but with an award system, nice art style and a "story" (if you can call it that). The base game is free (with 2x20 puzzle packs) and there are extra puzzle packs at 59p ($0.99) a time .

Yes! This is awesome. It's quite a popular game in Japan. Surprised it hasn't caught on more in the west. Works very well on the device.

Vote with your wallet and stop this overpriced HD shit.

Can't comment on 3GS but I've noticed that it seems to slow down more than Espgaluda on my iPad, but it didn't seem like it was excessively more. It felt in line with the increased amount of crap on screen, but never felt uncontrollable. Got any background services running? Tried restarting? You might want to ask in the iPhone DDP thread too.

Got Dodonpachi. It's a pretty big game (300mb).

As a pure RPG, Crimson Gem Saga is the better game. Unfortunately, the controls for CGS SUCK. Chaos Rings is RPG-lite, but the controls and gameplay are great.

It's always nice to get free games once in a while :D

Fastar, Rhythm Spirit, Mega Jump, Alphabetic and Galcon Labs have been made free once in a while :lol

I was wondering if there has been anything said about a 3g connection with the new Ipod Touch to be revealed and a built in speaker?

Edit: Sorry got confused that this was a gaming thread ;-(

Piczle Lines is my most played iPhone game so far. Both myself and my girlfriend really like it and I'm incredibly likely to buy more puzzle packs beyond the basic game.

iPad inclusion in the gaming thread! We've come in from the cold at last. It's so warm in here.

Does anyone know if there are any Australian crossword puzzle sources for 'Crosswords' (iphone/ipad)? I tried the lite version which is very enjoyable, but I want to do some Aussie crosswords.

That's right, you can only use gift cards for purchasing stuff on your account.

I agree, Chaos Rings has incredibly great analog controls and the battle system is nicely designed around the touch controls - works perfectly. It looks pretty nice too, a little pixelated on the edges of the polygons, but the game has a lot of nice 2D art in it.

It was on sale not too long ago, not sure if it is. I'd argue if you get all your enjoyment out of the battle systems though, Crimson Saga would be the better choice, because Chaos Rings limits your party to 2 people, which limits the complexity of the battles, and CRs doesn't really have a fun leveling system either. Still, it's a nice lite-RPG, very well polished.

Song Summoner (by SE) is more fun if you liked FF:T though, much more to enjoy in that RPG, and it has a better plot and characters.

If you haven't grabbed Pathpix yet its worth a shot then - you get 169 puzzles in the standard version and an additional 300 in pro

Netflix app has been updated to support iPhone and iPod Touch.

Yes!!! :) (hopefully this means I can watch my netflix on my phone now, and not something stupid like I can manage my list)

Maybe ill be able to keep up with this new thread.

I keep downloading all the free app a day games, and my back log is getting big now.

I missed Civilization though grrr

Help me iphone GAF! Bought dodonpachi DFK and go to sync apps, sync lasts 2 secs and doesnt add new apps, look at apps tab in itunes and none of my existing apps are there in the left column list only 4 new ones (incl Dodon) - and when i tick "sync apps" I get a warning saying its going to sync to the 4 new apps and delete all my existing ones!!!! is there any way to stop this total clusterfuck and how the hell did i do this?

also I check in my itunes apps folder on my PC and all my existing apps are in there?! Help me GAF I want to play Dodonpachi!

Ok, is there anyway to buy apps from iTunes without a credit card? It isn't accepting mine :|

Also, I played The Wars like hell in my Android phone and came to love that kind of game (you on one side, enemy on the other side, both send troops to fight) and I already have 2012 Zombies vs Aliens.

Any other The Wars type of game? Good ones lol.

yep it works great. It loads fast as hell on my Wifi and the quality seems to look better to me than Hulu plus streaming

Yes you can! Watching something now over 3G and the quality is incredible. I can't believe how optimized the stream seems to be. Impressive indeed!

Great news. Though every review of the app seems to be a 1-star review saying it's broken on their iPhone 3GS, so maybe 4s are working fine and we'll see a quick update for everyone else! :lol

In other news, I saw Knight's Rush came out today, never heard of it before, but this youtube preview of it makes it look pretty slick. Kinda like a modern day version of Altered Beast on crack from what I gather.

I'm glad I have a Iphone 4 than =]

If someone wants to design a useful OP, I will edit it into duckroll's post. Note that when I say useful, I don't mean "EXTREEEEME", I mean useful. Not filled with elaborate image art and superbanners or minute spec diagrams or thank you sections.

Just basic info for people who are new to the platform, with a smattering of universally recommended games and a link to the GAF spreadsheet.

I'm liking NHL 2K11. One dislike is you cannot (as far as I can tell) save a game between periods or midgame. Makes it hard for short bursts of gaming on the go. Worth 1.99 though!

Likewise.

AT&T is going to HATE this app, though. For those of us still on an unlimited data plan, I fear this may be the thing that forces them to push all users to limited data plans. :(

Finally!

Yes, you can stream movies from your queue, I just tested it out with the opening scenes from Barton Fink and Mulholland Dr. And it looked great, incredible quality.

I just let a full movie play (90 minutes long) over 3G with 100% screen brightness and it drained 30% of my battery. Not too bad, really.

I just recently found out there are different "themed" levels
Only downside is that only half of them actually support the "retina display" on the iPhone4. :\

Never noticed that before, which ones support it?

R-Type is … Well, it's R-Type!

So it's fucking awesome!

Dodonpachi R is also pretty good.

how are the controls in R-type?

Just came in to promote "reiner knizai's samurai". Awesome boardgame with asynchronous online! My username: MrYuYu. Feel free to add me. Easily worth the 4 euro

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but there is a neat sculpting app called iDough available for the iPad. It is similar to Sculptris and ZBrush. Looks promising.

iDough

I'm curious too, but since it has three different settings (d-pad, touch controls, and tilt?) I'm pretty sure it will be fine, possibly even easier w touch controls. I'd be more interested if it runs true to the original (framerate, etc).

You guys checked out Knight's Rush?

Basically Castle Crashers for ipod. Great stuff!

Video of the game.

I posted about it earlier, write up some impressions (+s & -s) and I'll probably buy it! It does look like it could be fun. Never played Castle Crashers though.

So they have 3 control schemes.
— Touch: Use one finger to drag-move the ship, with buttons to shoot and stuff. (This is the default scheme)
— Tilt: Is like Touch, but you can also use the accelerometer to move the ship
— Virtual D-Pad

You can have the buttons on the left or the right of the screen. There is an auto-fire option.

Touch is really good, although you have to be careful to not obstruct your view with the finger. It's fine though.

Edit: Framerate seems to be fine so far! (iPod Touch 3rd gen) Doesn't really surprise me though.

Some other stuff:
— 8 levels (obviously, lol)
— You can choose to play your own music
— There's an "Unlimited mode" (infinite lives), normal and insanely difficult (translation by me); insanely difficult is locked from the start
— You can choose to not scale the graphics, so I guess it's 1:1 pixel art in that case? If you choose that, the buttons are outside of the game's canvas, which is a good thing!

You can tell based on the previews at the bottom of the screen. If it looks crystal clear in the preview, it includes higher resolution artwork. If it looks pixelated, well, you know.
