For stills the spec page says 960x720, I guess it just crops from the 1280x720 (.9MP to begin with) frame to get a more traditional 4:3 picture size. I'm guessing it's a tiny sub MP lens cause the thinness of the case.

I think the bigger deal is that the low end model (albeit $229 now) is current rather than a last gen model. No longer need to spend $300 for the mid model to be up to date.
Ah, that sucks. :(

I wish the lower end model was 16GB though. At 8GB it feels like you may as well pay the additional $70 just to get 24GB more. Doesn't matter much to me, but my sister is hoping to get one for her b-day and while I think $299 is a bit too much to drop on a not so-special birthday, I can't bring myself to buy one lacking that much space for such a small difference in price.

Pity that no other developer has managed to hit the same quality then. I guess it's down to the scale of economies of the app store.
I was on my way months ago, but realized that I couldn't easily support both OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0 as a single guy out-of-the-gate, particularly when you think about the huge amount of artwork that needs to be created if you want to use shader magic effectively. I'm sure a lot of other people ran into this realization themselves. It's really a matter of budget.

Where it gets kinda hazy though is when you think about what companies like EA should be able to pull off easily, but choose to not do it.

I'm sure there's also some iDevice engines out there that could theoretically get this fidelity down, but there's a bunch of barriers that are hard to get over:
— Appropriate art pipeline (like node-based shader editors and shit, it's hard to compete with UE there!)
— Team size to produce the amount of art needed (this is a whole medieval town, all textured, shaded, whatever)
— Competence in terms of artwork
— Competence in terms of optimization (Epic has a fuckton of experience in the first place and can pick-and-buy competence, basically)

So it comes down to acknowledging that it's hard to play ball with the big boys if you're really small! And a lot of teams making iDevice stuff are rather small, in multiple dimensions. So this level of fidelity would appropriately be expected to be rare on the platform.

There's also other arguments, like the ones I brought above. A big one is that if you make the same money without coding a really intricate graphics engine, you don't code a really intricate graphics engine, right? On the other hand, if you sell really intricate graphics engines…

You know, they could port The Last Remnant to iPhone now. That would be funny.

Eh, its not quite as simple as that. The UE3 being on the iPhone doesn't mean you're going to see ports of PS3/360 games or that they're even possible.

Are any of these besides Robot Unicorn Attack worth playing?

I enjoy Amateur Surgeon and 5 Minutes to Kill Yourself. That was when they first came out though and there's been a deluge of wonderful games since then.

But you can play 5MtKY online, and probably Amateur Surgeon as well...of course you can play Robot Unicorn Attack online...so I guess it's just a matter of if you enjoy the flash version, would you want one that's got just a bit more?

I just have to repeat this, Epic Citadel:

You touched my tralala, mmmm my ding ding dong

Anyone else feel the same way? I seriously can't wait for the game. I keep replaying it and came to conclusion that I would be amazed even if it got released on the current consoles, yes its just that good.

Not sure if your reaction to this is healthy :)

But yes, it is pretty damn amazing - especially on the iPad.

How is Mirror's Edge?
Played a bit and it's fun -- a little bit of Canabalt with twists and steroids. The menu has Still Alive; made me quit the game and go buy it from iTunes Store :lol

I fricken love this device.

Good god, I know it's not just a flick of a switch, but it presents an option that wouldn't have been there at all. You haev your assets ready, and you have a significant amount of codebase which could be reused.

Just played Epic Citadel on my iPad.

Picked up Mirrors Edge this morning. I'm quite impressed with it. The controls are good, lots of context sensitive swipes (left for left, right for right, up for jump/wall run, down for slide/roll), a little bit of tilting here & there and no buttons on the screen. Winner.

Graphics, sound, presentation are all top-notch. I don't like 'Still Alive' but it does make for a great title track for the menu screen. So far gameplay seems like an advanced Canabalt (or a side scrolling Mirrors Edge) and all in all, for £2.99 I'm a happy chappy.

Now to check out that Epic Citadel game. Not seen it mentioned much.

Citadel is mindblowing...

Also, what device are you using? I'm wondering if Mirror's Edge even runs on a 3GS, just wanna make sure since the app description vaguely says that it's designed "JUST FOR THE IPHONE4!". Also wondering how good it looks on the 3GS (is it anti-aliased like Jet Car Stunts?).

I'm on a 4, sorry. The description seemed very 'iPhone 4 only!' without explicitly saying so but it didn't seem like something that couldn't be done on a 3GS. It doesn't use the gyroscope or anything. Very nice looking game though.

Might be best to wait for a demo (or confirmation from a 3GS owner).

Just read the toucharcade review and they mention that people are reporting that it runs well even on 1st gen iDevices on their forum.

But what it does show me is that a RPG in the vein of FFXII (all 3D enviroment, OTS camera) is possible.

^I'd like to know too. Also, Desktop Tower Defense was announced last year and still nothing...

(i know, i know... another TD game... but Desktop is one of the best IMO)

Apparently Rimelands: Hammer of Thor' has been released. Pretty interesting description:

In Rimelands, you follow the treasure hunter Rose Cristo through an epic steampunk fantasy adventure. The entire game is turn based, and features tons of customization options through talent trees and skill boosts. We're still working on our review which we will have posted soon, but if you've been chomping at the bit for Rimelands after following the threads in our upcoming games forum… It is finally here.

Will be watching impressions/reviews.

this is goddamn amazing
it's fucking unbelievable.

if Epic does not fuck this up and they make it a proper RPG...it'll sell iPods, iPads and iPhone 4's.

it's that damn good. just walking around the city is enjoyable.

It gave me the Fable feeling; best "settings" ever IMO it always makes me happy and wanna hug somebody.

Minsc, that looks really good. I'm burnt on buying new apps right now though >.<

I would buy that in a heartbeat, too.

I thought it was supposed to be a fighting game?

that was a different game. during the Epic demo, he was floating around in Epic Citadel, then got a game invite to play another game. they then played the other game.

Wasn't he just invited to fight against him, within the same game?

It really seems like if there was more going on in the Epic Citadel demo, frames would be lost.

Like if there was a battle, or even just people models walking around the town.

I thought Still Alive was from Portal. Or is this a different Still Alive?

Mirror's Edge run on a Touch v2? $5 is a little much for a blind buy for me on this platform. Getting a Touch v4 ASAP though.

The touch arcade review mentioned some forum members saying it ran fine on their 1st gen touch...which is the slowest of the iDevices. Of course they may be deluded and consider it playable when others may not for all I know.

Ossian Studios announced they are making an RPG for the iPhone now, The Shadow Sun, due out later 2010:

“The Shadow Sun,” a 3-D RPG that obviously draws from genre classics. CEO Alan Miranda writes that The Shadow Sun will “bring together the high adventure of classic D&D, combat inspired by Fable, Zelda, and The Witcher, and the fear of otherworldly horrors of H.P. Lovecraft.”

The Shadow Sun’s world and plot is hinted at in this snippet:

This is a world in which magic is wielded by only a few, where a cataclysm a millennium ago still fuels hostilities between the civilizations that remain, and where much of the lands beyond the fringes of human settlement remain a deadly unknown. It is also a world that has felt an alien touch upon its sun, shrouding it in ever-increasing shadow with consequences that are only now becoming horrifically apparent.

The game is rich in promised features that will feel familiar to any RPG fan: the ability to become a hero or a villain, combat featuring both magic and traditional weapons, fighting companions who may join you in your journey, and of course a story packed with “intrigue” and “shocking surprises.”

Sounds very nice on paper!

What if they spent more than 8 weeks optimizing it though? I'm sure even as well as it is, it still isn't using the hardware perfectly.

I picked up Rimelands: Hammer of Thor, seems pretty fun. Combat is enjoyable and somewhat challenging, there looks to be a ton of loot, and deep character customization, and the graphics are charming for it's size (30MB), so long as it is zoomed out.

It's a little rough in some areas though, the digital pad could be a little more forgiving. You can't move the camera. There is no mapping feature.

All in all, I think it should be a good game, none of the flaws are all that troublesome, and I love turn based games so that gets a big plus from me.

My co-worker just showed it to me. Good gravy. Whelp, back to loading my old unreal work and getting back into the engine again :lol

Edit:
They have normal maps, the draw distance is ridiculous, nice materials, animated mesh, alpha maps with no sorting issues, particles.
My co-worker just said "so, iPhone port confirmed?" This may be the push for a lot of other developers/3d artists to get into the mobile marketplace. I can't believe Unreal is going to be fighting with Unity3d for mobile engine market share. If I were making a mobile app, I would probably be going unreal for my 3d mobile needs.

I don't know jack shit about programming, but I do know that is someone is able to utilize the engine the way Epic did with the Citadel I would be all over it. They could easily add mobile developer to their organization (and in this economy any additional cash flow should be considered a great thing).

My jaw dropped after it loaded, it was fluid and gorgeous on my iPad.

Was great on the iPad, a bit of a framedrop when moving around fast outside. It was lovely and it actually pains me to see the combat of the actual game. I imagined some kind of first person RPG

Epic Citadel puts everything I've ever played on my iphone to shame.
I want someone to make a UE3 iPhone game NOW.

This is the type of shit that will make me justify paying more than 5 bucks for an iPhone game.
Scary.

This makes me want to just buck-up and buy a fucking iPod. I'll wait for my brothers girlfriend to give me the one she won in a raffle before I make such a decision. Didn't even realize they're releasing a new model next week. WTF, Epic Citadel has got to be one of the most impressive things I've seen as of late.

Agreed

Listen guys, it's a tech demo. Hold your horses. You really want to purchase an iDevice for a tech demo? Make sure you have an actual use for the thing beyond that.

Good news is that there's some pointers right in this thread right here :D
