All of a sudden I felt like playing some Tactical / Strategy / Simulation RPG. What are some good suggestions?. I don't want a typical RPG like FF, but more like, say, FFT... but seeing how SquareEnix isn't releasing FFT (got announced during the last E3, so it might still be sorta far...).

So yeah, any suggestions?. I basically want a game that lets you create your own character/s and level up like crazy, build items and stuff for him, etc.. And usually Tactical RPGs have a lot of that :P

(I feel so bad for selling Disgaea 3 now... sniff..)

Song Summoner Encore!

Also, FF:T is coming out soon, less than two weeks i believe, Sept. 15th, so maybe you just want to wait for that. SS:E is quite awesome though, sounds right up your alley.

I'm thinking about the new iPod Touch...some quick questions:

1) What are the good websites that talk about iPod gaming?
2) Do games not updated for the spiffy retina display look not so great?

Thanks!

1) I'd suggest:
http://www.148apps.com/
http://toucharcade.com/
http://appadvice.com/appnn/
http://iphone.appstorm.net/

If you RSS all those sites, you'll get 1-2+ paid games for free a week most likely, and also you'll be on top of all the sales.

2) They still look good most of the time imo. Half the time I can't even tell (like in Sword & Poker 2).

Hey! Thanks for the suggestion :)
I'm checking out the lite version right now. But 1200 Yen (around $12? or maybe $9 over there?) seems a bit too steep for a game I'll play for a week and a half at most, seeing how after that all I will care about will be FFT :lol Also this game looks a bit ugly? But other than that the premise sounds pretty good.

Now if only FFT were a universal app so I can play it on my iPad too... :/ (I doubt that will happen, but yeah....)

I never noticed this before, but from that link:

The new "War of the Lions" edition will include some extra features for those who have slashed through it before somewhere else. Iwano even went as far as to say that he thinks this new version will be the best so far (big surprise).

"We customized the playability for iPhone," Iwano explaioned. "Even though I always thought that the touch screen was a better fit for Simulation RPGs over a controller, I was concerned by the screen size of iPhone since it looks too small to play the game comfortably. However, we learned so much about utilizing the small screen size of iPhone developing Song Summoner, and I can confidently present 'Final Fantasy Tactics' for iPhone as the ''Final Fantasy Tactics' with the most comfortable playability.'"

That about wraps it up for me! Day one. Thank god it's not a virtual d-pad like with FF1/2, like that other poster taunted earlier (though I don't have any problem with them myself).

your mileage may vary, from the meager 4 non-retina games i own the quality varies dramatically based simply on art style

Really interested... might pull the trigger.

My character's level 11 and I'm around 10 or so dungeons in.
It gets a little rote, but it's still enjoyable.

Seems pretty high. So far there have been 6 levels, each with 2 acts. I think I'm close to the end though. Each act takes anything from 1:30 to 2:30 to speed-run, obviously longer the first few times through as you learn the levels. There are messenger bags hidden in each level to collect and in-game 'achievements' that unlock artwork. I can see me playing it for quite some time as it's good fun learning the routes and then stringing everything together in a nice run.

Sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Is the FFT coming out a straight port from Playstation or is it the War of the Lions remake?

Edit: next time I will read before posting

Rebirth of Fortune is free right now, and it looks EXACTLY like FFT in terms of play style. Graphics look like someone mixed FFT and Advance Wars in an awesomeness blender. I haven't played much, but it seems very promising. :-)

Only thing I noticed so far is that you take individual turns... maybe turns are based on a speed attribute, but at least in the first battle it was just your turn / enemy turn, one guy at a time. Anyway, for free? go go go!!!

swung by my mac store today near my house and played with a iphone 4g and have to say I miss my iTouch not working...

Tempted to sell my Wii and some other stuff since I know i'll use a itouch 4 more than my wii.

This makes me want to just buck-up and buy a fucking iPod. I'll wait for my brothers girlfriend to give me the one she won in a raffle before I make such a decision. Didn't even realize they're releasing a new model next week. WTF, Epic Citadel has got to be one of the most impressive things I've seen as of late.

Did anyone else have trouble with it on the iPad? It refuses to run on mine.

It would not install on mine till I updated the iPad software, then it installed and ran great.

Try downloading it in iTunes and synching it to the iPad if you have not already

Yeah. I tried that. Did not help. It crashes every time as it shows the Epic Games logo.

It kept crashing like that for me too until I restarted my iPad, works fine since

Has anyone tried the Settlers for the iPad yet? Just wondering how it is...

Rimelands: Hammer of Thor could be worth a look. I haven't tried it, but the review at Toucharcade is pretty positive.

Yeah. I finally got it to work with a full shutdown. I guess its related to the amount of ram the iPad has.

Tried it yes. Not much though, just the first tutorial mission. It seems to run fine. One annoyance is that the controls do not use pinch to zoom, they have an onscreen slider for that instead.

The number of iOS apps which, both, have high production and target only ES 2.0 is... well, one. That's why nothing else looks close to Epic Citadel.

Disbelief that a phone could produce such graphics in the first place is just an IMR state of mind.

Thanks. It's going to still drive me nuts knowing that I'm playing games that could look so much better. Hopefully the more popular games will be updated in the future and new games coming out will support it upon release.

That said, will FFT support the higher res?

I find it matters most in completely 3D games (due to jaggy aliasing), 2D games like GeoDefense, S&P2, or FF:T probably aren't so bad (for me).

I extremely doubt FF:T will have retina display support, as no version to date (PSP, PSX, etc) supports anything near the iPhone 4's native resolution of 960x640, while the 480x320 resolution fits in right along all the existing ports.

Are there options to run with black borders, or does the device upscale no matter what?

Pretty much upscales no matter what (some rare games support running in a window). You could always just hold it further away from your face if the pixels are too big... ;)

I played FF:T on the Playstation on a ~27" SD TV, so going to a 3.5" screen is already a dramatic improvement in pixel density. The game ran at 320x240 on the PSX iirc as well.

What region? It's still showing up $2.99 here in Canada, although maybe the sale ended.
Germany, it's still on sale. so sales can be region locked... that explains why we didn't have a monopoly sale over here :(

Good point. Thanks for the help!

What about Sketch Hop?

I'd disagree about there not really being any high production value iOS apps, EA has quite a few and Gameloft too. Games like Need For Speed: Shift, Hero of Sparta, NOVA etc all aim to be full-featured console-like games. But games always look like somewhere between PS1 and Dreamcast standard in terms of visuals. I've seen higher-than-usual polygon counts in NFS: Shift and Trophylite Rally but nothing that went far beyond the other stuff at all. Epic Citadel is like a friggin' time machine that teleports you a year further in terms of tech or something, it's nuts.

I'd say perhaps the iOS platforms require a different approach to some fundamental aspects of 3D engine programming and only now when the big boys (Epic) are seriously digging into it do we see people coming to grips with it. That's the only way I can explain high-production-value games with PS1-like graphics having framerate issues while a demo that seriously looks as good as Unreal Tournament 3 on my beefy pc runs relatively smoothly.

So it's not a full football game, just a tackling mini-game? No wonder it was so small.
I tried it and got bored after fifteen minutes. The opposing players always dive head-first at you from the same distance, so it's pretty much impossible to not dodge them if you're trying. Deleted.
It's better at harder difficulties because you're constrained in regards to where you can run. I had a lot of fun with it.

Speaking of Tactical / Strategy / Simulation RPGs, are there any good ones specifically for the iPad (noticed the suggestions given were iPhone ones) ?

The PSP enhanced port also just zoomed in and cropped rather than redrawing the graphics, so don't expect much. Though there is the possibility that this will be the definitive version.

Strange that they would only put Sims 3 Adventures on sale in Germany.

I bought Shibuya, but when I get to the menu screen, a white pop-up covers the screen and I can't do anything- anyone else have this problem?
