The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

I wish there was a lite version of Carcassonne or something. I don't know much about it but I know GAF loves it and from the screenshots it looks like something I could get into. At $4.99+ it's hard to just jump in though. :(

Honestly I might get Wizard Hex just because of the developers. Sword of Fargoal has been one of my favorite games and certainly one of the best supported over the last year or so. I trust the guy to follow through with his promises. Plus the game looks interesting if the AI is decent and/or they hurry up and get online play in there.

No I don't have a site of my own. I certainly know how and would like to make one but there are things that prevent me from doing it. I don't think my own site would get much traffic and I don't want to pay for hosting being the biggest two.

I just like putting a lot of effort into the things I create, even if they are just forum posts. I appreciate your feedback though :)

So what's the consensus on Aralon? Does it succeed at being a mini-Elder Scrolls?
I think it is a pretty damn successful Elder Scrolls lite. Four unique character classes which all seem to have depth (except the Warrior), a decent story, pretty vast world, good graphics, loot, and a pretty wide range of
quests. I'm enjoying it so far...

Hi guys. I just wanted to let you know that my game Shelly the Shell Master is going FREE as part of the Third New Year App Blowout.

Here's the link:

TRAILER

There's nothing to lose now, so give it a try!

Also you'd do well in checking out the sale, there are some great games there. For example Battle of Wesnoth will be going from 4.99 to 0.99. Given time differences the time they go on sale might vary case to case, but by tomorrow it should be in full swing.

Please leave a review on the store if you like the game. That would really help me out.
Done and done.

What is the framerate like on Time Trials? I would assume the number of cars on the screen would reduce it but when it's just you on the track...

I've just really enjoyed the smooth framerate of Real Racing 1.

If it's something that you both would want to play together, Crosswords by Stand Alone gets my recommendation. It's $9.99 (universal) but it's soooo good. You download puzzles from a variety of sources everyday and the interface is absolutely superb.

Didn't notice any significant different in time trial. Yeah, the framerate isn't as smooth as in Real Racing 1, but overall the game is much better.

Any good picross clones?
Pixelogic. I only have the iPad version, which plays well because of the screen size. Not sure how the iPhone version is, but I linked the lite version so you can check that out first. It has a lot of puzzles built-in, an archive of several hundred user-made puzzles, and a new puzzle to download every day for free. Great game.

Took me ~20 hours to beat it as 1 of the 4 classes. I finished it before the update so it was a bit buggy like almost any WRPG, but I enjoyed the game for what it is. It's not completely fleshed out, but it's very much a pocket WoW/Elder Scrolls game. The classes have enough variety that the game feels different even during a 2nd playthrough. There's not much to the storyline though, so it might get a little stale.

So...Sword of Fargoal or 100 Rogues?
100 Rogues is my preference. I prefer its art style and controls to Fargoal's. 100 Rogues has two character classes, a knight and a mage class. Fargoal has one, but the character can both melee and use spells so it's kind of similar I guess. Roguelikes tend to appeal to different tastes though, so it's a tough decision!

I'm enjoying Puzzle Agent but boy is it a blurry, muddy mess on the iPhone 4.

Hm...it's supposed to support the Retina display.

The artstyle seems off to me. Cowboys? Flying babies? I don't know, I've held off purchasing it because of the art. I think I'd rather stick to traditional fantasy.

100 Rogues. This is one of those games I have played about every week since its release some time ago. The other game I totally dig is Carcassonne.
Seconded. Played so long after my wife went to sleep the other night that the game actually kept going in my dreams. While I would not recommend that to anyone, the game is awesome.

I've played lots of both and enjoyed them in different ways. Fargoal is a much better game, all around. It's super-polished and much more varied. Rogues is really rough sometimes, and you end up playing the first few levels over and over again. Fargoal's visual simplicity gives it a longer life.

Have you played 100 Rogues since the update a few weeks ago? It added much needed polish to the game, increased loot variety, and a new character class... which you have to pay for, sadly. I bought the game for a buck and didn't mind, but others are bound to feel ripped off.

I found Fargoal incredibly boring though. Didn't like it at all.

A few. I have both iPACROSS and Pixelogic. You can't go wrong with either of them. I prefer the presentation and play of iPACROSS, but Pixelogic has a puzzle editor and you can download daily puzzles (so you'll have an infinite amount of puzzles).

Question about Aralon:

I'm on a quest that I have to talk to Sunclaw, a
Dragon,
to get him to open the gates of a temple. He just refuses talking to me though, saying that he is not in the mood or something. What do I do?

Just got my self an iPod touch, is there a way to turn off having to enter my itunes password all the time when buying apps and stuff?
Unless apple have changed toggleable settings for the 4th gen touch, I don't believe so. Best to make purchases/updates in bulk or close to each other, saves having to imput the password too often.

Diner Dash just went free for the first time in the 2+ years it's been available on the App Store. Gonna download it to see what all the fuss is about...

I asked before about good story based games on iPhone, and got a couple of good recommandations about adventure games. But are there any RPG´s on iPhone with a story that´s actually good (and that´s not conversions of SNES titles from Square).

Chaos Rings.

I'm really trying to dig deep into games that are good and have good polish/presentation that aren't publicly well known... any help would be awesome.

Ozone
Knight's Rush
Kosmo Spin
Circuit_Strike.One

All very different games but all pretty damn obscure for the level of quality, originality and polish they offer.

Damn, that's too bad.

It's also a pain I can't subscribe to podcasts on it and have them auto download when I'm on WiFi.

On the topic of games though, I started playing CivRev right after getting it to see If its a decent civ game, then 3 hours later I had killed the other 4 civs (just played on easy ) and won the game, haha. Pretty damn good game.

Just get Podcaster. It'll handle everything for you, and lets you download podcasts of any length over 3g.

Try Downcast for podcast subscriptions. It has the feature you're after.

Only tried it on iPhone but don't see why it wouldn't work on iPad also.

Look along the beach for the carcass of a drake and pick up the tooth inside, then speak to Sunclaw again.

Thanks, that one. But since it´s a Square, I´m not so sure that it falls under my definition of a good story. :)

Are there any more recommendations?

Chaos Rings actually has one of the better stories in a Square RPG (too bad the rest of it is not that impressive, serviceable, but not good). I don't think you'll find any RPGs on iOS with a good story, period. Nothing like Planescape Torment or NWN2:MotB or Bloodlines.

Your other choices are basically just Aralon, Crimson Gem Saga (PSP port, decent RPG), Rimelands: Hammer of Thor, and Undercroft. There's more obscure stuff like Ash, Zenonia, Across Age, Monster RPG 2, but none of it is really outstanding. Then there's the older ports like Shining Force (holds up surprisingly well), Secret of Mana, FF1/2 and so on.

There's a surprising large void of RPGs imo, I think the device could be well suited to the slower, less attention hogging pace they tend to play at.

Podcaster had a lite version, so I will go with that, thanks for the help!

So, instead of asking what games are good, I will ask what post, or where is the big list of good games separated by game type? Im sure someone has made such a list, and hopefully they put pictures :P

I just got an awesome review from a fallen comrade that I found too funny so I thought I would share:

Awesome (5 stars) by Seth (WiiDSmoker)
Fun and cute little game. Saw it mentioned on NeoGaf. Unfortunately I've been banned for a very long time, but I still lurk. I'm glad I do for the neat little charms such as this. My niece will have a field day with it!

So for anyone mourning WiiDSmoker, rest assured that he is still with us, lurking :lol

Picked up Spiderman for a buck it is much better than I thought it would be. The controls graphics gameplay are all great and it is fun.

This thread has just exploded with games i think i have more than enough games to last me a while on my iTouch but more and more interesting titles keep popping up. :lol

I haven't played 100 Rogues, but Sword of Fargoal is outstanding. There is also supposed to be a major update coming sometime early this year that will further expand the item/armor system.

Picked up the free version of Zenonia to try it out. I really didn't like the d-pad, sometimes the character would move too far. Other times I couldn't move him fast enough and would make mistakes. I couldn't play a game for very long like that.
