Also, now I'm comparing the Apple Store and the AT&T Store -- Apple says 3 weeks til ship, AT&T says 7-10 days. Maybe I'll go with AT&T.

They shouldn't charge till it ships. I ordered mine last week and just canceled it before driving to AT&T to pick one up. No charge ever showed up. It didn't even register yet on the AT&T system that I already upgraded when I went to check out AT&T's online store.

All these complexities are making my brain spin!!!

I've officially switched over to the 2 page model of app sorting. First page is all directly clickable apps that I use the most often, and the second page is entirely folders.

Toolbox - holds all my utility apps. Speed tests, photobucket uploader, iMovie, etc
Portals - holds all my web-portally type apps like Fandango, IGN, Giant Bomb, IMDB
Music - holds my music apps like Pandora, Wunder Radio, Glee, etc
Social - holds social apps like twitter, yelp, FML
Books - holds magazines, book apps and comic apps

...and then a bunch of game folders separated as best as I can by type.

Have room for another 2-3 folders on that second page, too...but I think I'm going to need a second toolbox folder sooner than later.

Nah, they use IP address to make sure you're in the country. Same with other apps and services such as Hulu and AB player.
 
Here's a small quirk that I wonder if Apple will ever change. When you're watching a video or YouTube and it enters into landscape mode, does anyone ever wish that the volume buttons would swap to match the orientation?

If they are standard resolution (640x480), then not matter what they won't be in the native resolution.

I'm not sure what I have at home, but I just converted a 720p stream into an mp4 no problem, which would give you an HD resoution.

am pissed that they charged tax based on the full amount of the phone (+$70) instead of the purchase price. that's bullshit and since I'm going to be on a plane again on business in the next couple of days, I might try to return and re-buy in some other state. I'm cheap and never like to feel like I just got hustled. paying $70 in tax on a $300 purchase qualifies as "bullshit" to me, so it becomes about the principle of the matter.

Uh, it wasn't that difficult to understand. When YT is in landscape and the volume bar is across the screen horizontally, the + button is on the left while the volume bar increases to the right, while the - button is on the right while the volume bar decreases to the left. He's just saying would they ever swap the two so that hitting the right (-) button increases the volume and the left (+) button decreases the volume. Though I doubt Apple would do that as it would probably confuse most people.

I still don't get it.

There is no + or - button on the screen to control volume at all...just a slider that reorients depending on whether you're in landscape or portrait.

The only thing I can think of is that he's talking about the hardware buttons feeling reversed because up the + symbol would bring the volume up, but it's on the left, so one might think that it's supposed to lower the volume since left = lower on the screen, but on the hardware left means higher.

Only solution I can think of is to just not have hardware volume buttons.

Edit: I think that's what you just said actually now that I re-read it. :lol

That's because most people aren't fucking brain dead enough that it would even cross their minds.
 
So I'm trying to get an iPhone 4 with a new family plan for 3 on AT&T's site, but when I'm on the site, clicking the add a phone option only allows me to select another iPhone 4. Is it possible to start a new family plan with only the iPhone 4 on the main line and just two regular cell phones on the additional lines cause I'm not seeing an option to allow me to to do this.

When I turned the iPad to landscape I was wondering why clicking the left part of the volume rocker was increasing volume, when, logically, it should have been decreasing volume. Honestly, little things like that is what sets Apple apart and I was surprised that it was left unchanged.
 
Not even a week in and my phone is already showing wear and tear even though I'm using a case :(

Have two weird feint white marks under the glass at the back, and then some weird scratches on the bottom left. Small and unnoticeable unless you're looking for it.

How are yours holding up?

Easy easy easy easy easyyyy.

I've done this a couple times too. When you're God awful tired on an airplane, trying to drone out everything else watching a video and slowly are falling asleep, you want to turn the volume down.

Not thinking you follow what makes logical sense on the screen, but decide to use the buttons. Then you curse yourself.

Great. I keep it in it's own pocket separate from my keys and change, so it rarely gets scuffed.
 
So I get to the local AT&T corporate store in my area at about 6am this morning, was like about 80th in line...by the time I got to the counter at about 8:10am they've already ran out of 32GB models, but they gave me a reservation voucher for their phone shipment that arrives later today...they say as long as I return by the end of the day I should be all good...I hope? =P

Little things like keeping the hardware interface consistent has always been their thing. It's why the Nano doesn't change the wheel buttons when you rotate it. It'd be madness.

Hardware buttons doing different things without some visual cue or any cue in fact would be infuriating.

It means you have to check everytime what function it's going to do next. Sure, orientation is the cue, right? But what if the phone is flat on a table and its not obvious?

Well the Nano’s buttons are labeled. But even then when you rotate it everything is still in the “correct” orientation. Rewinding is down, and fast-forwarding is up. Down decreases, goes back; up increases, goes forward. Makes sense. Unless you are left handed and flip the thing the other way or something, but lefties don’t count, do they?

But the iPad, and iPhones (prior to the fourth), and iPod touches don’t have labeled buttons, and clicking the left button of something never increases anything on consumer electronics. Thinking about it, does “going left” increase anything on anything? It’s ingrained in our lives that left = decrease.
 
Ran my battery all the way down last night. I got just over 9hrs of usage and about 37-38 hrs of standby time. The usage was mostly streaming Internet radio, browsing GAF, a couple of emails, some text and about 20 min of calls.

Pretty damn good.

I just made the same decision and went for buying from Apple. I was sort of pushed by Orange not doing the iPhone 4 on upgrades yet, but I was already sorta leaning that way. In the end it isn't really more expensive, you're still paying for the device in monthly instalments with a contract, and it's much more convenient to not be tied in for 2 years.

I'd say if you have £500/600 spare now buy it from apple and get a SIM only plan (And a microSIM cutter/adapter or get someone to do it for you in a shop or something).

Don't really know which provider is best. I'm with Orange mostly because of Orange Wednesdays.

I know what you mean when he gave me my total of 391 and some change I'm like um what? I know the bumper wasn't THAT expensive. Then he explains the tax is on the full price. I looked at my receipt from my 3g and the tax was on 299.99. What's changed in two years?

And since when is fast forwarding up? In fact I'd probably associate rewinding as up, since it's like return to top.

My point is that left-right/up-down being certain things is pretty much arbitrary.

And what about if you're holding the phone away from you - should left-right volume change then aswell? Madness I say.

Also, left may often be decrease, but I stress again it's arbitrary. Note how anticlockwise would probably be considered back or left or down. Except on faucets it's on. And what about volume wheels? Do you go by rotation direction or the exposed sidemovement? Madness. i

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think you get how insane it would be to expect users to know that the orientation of a device changes its hardware controls. I don't think there's even precedent on this. Shit works the way you'd expect it to on everything.

It'd at least be handy for Apple to officially say they are working on *something*. I'd think most people could wait a few days if they knew they were going to get an answer soonish.

Yeah. The buttons are clearly labeled with a "+" and "-", so you know what to push simply because of what the button says it's going to do, no matter the orientation.

You can't actually feel those by touch (or I can't, anyway) - but because they're circles they don't feel like the silent switch like the rocker did on previous iphones.

I put protective clear skins on the front and back, and I'm waiting for a bumper to arrive. But man, they sure take away from the sleekness of the naked phone.

If you held the Nano on it’s side, with the screen on the left, you wouldn’t be confused that pressing down on the wheel is increasing volume or fast-forwarding, especially considering the button is clearly pointing down? If someone handed you a remote with two unlabeled vertical buttons and told you to increase the volume you wouldn’t instinctively go for the upper button?

There’s no “correct” orientation on the iPad or iPhone, as Jon Ive stated. If you exclusively held the iPad in landscape, I feel it would be confusing that pressing the left side of the volume rocker increases the volume. It’s just not how we’ve been trained.

Is this a big deal? Probably not. But I think it’s foolish to say it’s a stupid suggestion. Even if Marty Chinn brought it up.
