Do you guys keep wifi on all the time or switch off after use? I always switch it off but I've noticed that wifi turns off automatically when I don't use the phone for long stretches. Does it overall effect the battery life still?

Just want to know this so I don't continue habits that I developed with my previous nokia smartphone.
Set it. Forget it. No reason to fiddle with it unless it's causing issues.

Care to explain how this makes any sense?
If you're using sync, you can't add media from any other computer but your own; it forces you to erase the contents of your iPod/iPhone if you try. That's what happened the last time I used it, at least.

yeah. that's cuz it's a sync solution based on a ten year old ideology. (one master PC and one ancillary device)

personally, I find the advantages worth the trade-offs. anyone who regularly collects music on multiple computers could (and should) disagree with me.

but, hey, when iOS 5 hits, this will be less of an issue since you'll be able to add music to the iPhone via the iCloud and iTunes match services and not just a single computer.

Does wireless sync in iOS 5 work with multiple computers?

Man, with all the sweetness included in iOS 5, I'm not even sure I'll upgrade to the iPhone 4S/5 this year, my iPhone 4 is still plenty powerful. I also just got the Apple Store exclusive Mophie battery case for it, which is awesome and doubles the battery.

iPhone 5 is going to have to be crazy excited to make me upgrade, I think. But then again, I'm sure it will be shiny...

No, but it's less of an issue (I made a point not to say it was completely solved) since you can still grab your music from the cloud without the sync. it's drag and drop from the sky, dude

the itunes syncing is for people who care about syncing podcasts, ratings and smart playlists and all that other metadata but is still based on one computer.

baby steps, i guess?

Unless it works differently on the iPhone - with the iPods if you told iTunes to manage manually, you could add from multiple PCs. Of course, you lose the syncing, but it works

So some days ago some of you might remember i went naked with my iPhone 4 for the first time.

Today i dropped it at some hard floor while changing clothes in the locker room.

Luckily nothing has happened, maybe my Home button is a little bit more responsive.

I'll keep going naked. =)

PS: My protection film at the back got some scratches.

So I went to the Verizon store to add the unlimited data plan to my account, but apparently one has to have a smart phone in order to add it. Looks like I'll end up activating my father's old blackerry pearl in order to be able to get it. Weird, seeing as I'll only be using the blackberry for a month until I'm able to get the iphone, but it seems quite worth it not to have to worry about data caps.

So I have an old ass RAZR and want to get the iPhone 5 as soon as it comes out, but I know nothing about the phone industry or the Apple devices industry. Is it like video games where I can go ahead and put my name on a list somewhere to pre-order it? And would I do this at my AT&T store (I want to continue with my same phone number and provider) or the Apple store?
Anybody?

Been naked since my first smartphone, my ideology is "if it breaks it breaks". I hate cases with a passion since they are to big and clunky no matter the size.

iPhone 5 isn't officially announced so there is nothing that you can pre-order yet. It depends on what Apple does this time - in the past (iPad 1, iPhone 4) they allowed people to reserve online but with the iPad 2 launch it was first come first serve and everyone had to wait in a long ass line.

Both AT&T and Apple Stores should be able to port your number.

I hate quoting myself but I am getting a smartphone tomorrow so I wanted to ask some people that are not Verizon reps (because employees at Verizon are obligated to sell phones, so I need relatively unbiased answers).

As someone who is not familiar with smartphones, how long will it take for Apple to no longer support the iPhone 4 in updates? It would stink to get one and then the iPhone 5 comes out and Apple yanks support for the iPhone 4.

Also, what is Camera+ exactly? I want a good camera (and the iPhone 4 looks like it has a really great one) but I know this is a supposedly good app although there are people complaining about it crashing. What does it exactly do and is it recommended? It also says it is compatible with the iPod Touch (but I didn't think the iPod Touch had a camera, unless the new ones do...?).

Last question - I know Apple had to make adjustments to the iPhone 4 to work on Verizon's network. Did Apple ever fix the issue where if you held it with your left hand a certain way it disconnected?

Thanks for the answers in advance. If no one is able to answer, then I'll just take my chances with the iPhone 4. I was looking at some Blackberry phones but since my iPod Touch is pretty much gone (it keeps getting stuck in recovery mode - no, I didn't jailbreak it - and it keeps going back after I continually recover it) I think I'll use my iPhone for both purposes.

Apple supported the 3G from iOS 2.0 to 4.0. 3GS from iOS 3 through iOS 5. From the beta, it seems like the iPhone 4 was the target machine for iOS 5, so it looks like it should last until iOS 6 or even longer. The original iPhone and iPhone 3G had really poor processors, but the processor in iPhone 4 (and RAM) looks like it is better built for the future.

A lot of the camera apps just let you do more stuff to it, like add effects or whatnot. I have Camera+ but really just use the normal camera app on the iPhone. Looks like Camera+ has an increased digital zoom that looks better (but I say stay away from digital zoom altogether), let's you crop photos, an image stabilizer, and a lot of effects and borders you can add to your photos.

The Verizon iPhone 4 uses a different antenna. I think it still technically has that problem, but the "weak spot" is no longer in that same spot, so it has a less of a chance happening, and I've also heard that Verizon's signal is strong enough to for it to rarely happen.

Thanks, that helps a lot. My concerns with getting the iPhone 4 are pretty much gone. As long as it is supported well and has a great camera then I'll be happy. Games are also a nice touch, but it wasn't close to a main decision behind getting a smartphone (which is why I was looking at Blackberries).

I just picked up my new iPhone and new service provider, at&t. Verizon has broken the last straw with me so I had to go to at&t unfortunately. The at&t plan turned out to be cheaper and has a better deal than what I ever got with Verizon, but I would have stayed had Verizon's customer service been more accommodating. Oh well, their loss.

had a talk with a verizon store worker when I activated an old blackberry so I can could add the unlimited data plan to my account. He said he expects Verizon to eventually add an unlimited data plan for 70, 80 dollars.

I switched last year. Have had better service than I did on verizon, and its cheaper. Love AT&T so far.

I am in pretty much the same boat . I have an old LG chocolate 3 and since it is not a smart phone adding a data plan to it now will do nothing once the change over happens on July 7th. The Verizon store workers were literally telling people today that if you get in on the unlimited date plan by 7/6/11 you will be grandfathered in. Oh well have to use my upgrade tomm and get an Iphone 4. I have no way of getting an older cheap smart phone before the 6th. I wanted to wait until Iphone 5 but i have no options left.

I was in the same boat as you, luckily my dad lent me an old blackberry to use for a few weeks until I am up for an Iphone.

Yup, so far at&t has been way more accommodating than Verizon has ever been (excluding this one time where this one Verizon store really tried to help us out by giving us a load of discounts and whatnot when they tried to avoid going through Verizon corporate to resolve an issue).

Glad all of you are having a great time on ATT, While I cant even make a call from my house on ATT cuz their SHIT service is SHIT! My friend got an Iphone 4 on Verizon and has 5 bars everywhere in my city (Katy,Tx) which is literally right next to Houston. While AT&T you are lucky if you get 1 bar.

I'm in H-town. I have friends who are on AT&T in all parts of Houston and the surrounding areas. Some have absolutely no problems while others have issues with dropped calls. The criticism I would have is that AT&T's network isn't consistent. Whenever I visit my parents in the Texas Hill Country I usually get 2 or 3 bars. So, while I can't stream music or videos as well as I could if I were in Houston, my phones calls always go through and are never dropped.

This is my exact problem, funny thing is when I leave my neighborhood I get 3-5 bars just fine, but in my neighborhood I'm lucky if I can even send a call out, I can only text from my house nothing more.

Also I have a question for you guys/girls, how would one go about WIFI calling on an iphone 4? I was going to try Skype but I don't know If i can route all my numbers to Skype and use it while I'm at home. I don't mind paying 5$ a month for it, but will it work with any of my contacts that do not have Skype installed on their phones? Im asking is if I pay for it will it make all my calls go through skype, instead of using my cell data?

The main reason is that Verizon customer service (through the phone) would treat me like crap and like they owned me (something you don't want to do to your customers). They taunted me to quit their service (stating that I couldn't) and they made promises that they never followed up on (I even mentioned that they made the promise on the phone, which they recorded, and they got mad at my mentioning that because it was true, they still denied ever promising me to fix a situation involving my bill - that problem with my bill was their mistake, which they admitted to).

When I went to get the iPhone, they wanted $600 for it since I did not have any upgrades available (I made the counter that the last two phones I got through the upgrades were faulty, one of which Verizon knew about beforehand but did not think to tell me before I upgraded to it and then they refused to let me switch to a phone that actually worked). They also said that they couldn't give me the upgrade so I could get the iPhone for $200 because Apple wouldn't let them (I am not sure if they were lying or not, but that was their excuse) and then they said that if I switched to the data plan without buying a phone that they couldn't promise me that I would be grandfathered in. It's not like I didn't try to stay with them, but when you treat your customers like crap then I had no choice but to leave.

On the other side, at&t's plan offers unlimited calls to any mobile phone and provider with minutes being used only for landlines (and those minutes roll over). I also get unlimited texts and the iPhone for $200. The kicker? The price of that plan with the data package of $25 a month was only $5 more than the plan with Verizon without the data package of $30 a month included.

It was a relatively easy decision after all the bad experiences I had with Verizon.

Can anyone help me with custom ringtones?

I am trying to put them on my Wife's Iphone 4 but for some reason it will not show up on the phone.

- They are in the correct format (,m4r)
- They are less than 30 seconds in length
- They do not have any DRM (ripped from old music CDs)
- They show up in Itunes under the ringtones directory both on her computer AND in the phone.
- Her phone is updated to the most current version, as is Itunes.
- All her other media works fine (Books, music, video etc)
- Have restarted and re-synced the phone a number of times.

After all this, the "tones" do not show up in her sounds under settings, or as options when assigning ringtones in contacts.

I feel like I am missing something really simple.

Did you make sure to check it to sync in the ringtones tab?

Yep sync is checked. Done everything a dozen different websites said to do...kind of annoyong to say the least.

Have now even remade the ringtone files again and still no go.

Well i took the plunge Sunday morning and picked up Iphone4. Got unlimited data plan (Verizon). First smart phone ever. Love it. Anyone suggest some cool apps? Tips? I already looked up a couple websites on saving battery life.

thanks.

I ended up UNchecking the ringtones syncing and doing it manually.

by the way, it's .m4r right, not ,m4r.

My sister's having a lot of trouble with her iPhone 4. She was getting an error asking her to restore when she plugged it in to her PC. So I did the trick where you use iPhone Explorer to delete "iTunesCDB", it worked but she started getting the error again weeks later, so I did that again and it worked. A day later the same error. Finally, I tried the fix again, started syncing it, and at the end of the sync I got an error saying the sync can't be completed.

So now she's going to try restoring it completely, hopefully that'll make that errors stop.

Mr. Pockets,

When you right click and look at properties are you sure the ending file extension is not.. songname.m4r.m4a? That was happening to me. I couldnt for the life of me figure out why it would not save as just m4r when I would rename it. After some research I went into windows explorer options and realized some file extensions were hidden. I was able to delete the m4a and save it properly. It took me a couple tries of resyncing also. Finally my ringtone showed up as "Custom Ringtone" above the other ones.

I got a paid of Jabra's HALO bluetooth headphones off of Amazon when it was their Gold Box deal of the day, holy shit are these things awesome when paired with my iPhone. They sound really, really good for being bluetooth and all the functions work with the iPhone.

Well, as far as battery life goes, I cannot recommend a battery case from Mophie enough. Double your battery life when you need it, costs around $80, and gives pretty good protection for the iPhone. When you're spending around $30 on a decent case anyways, I say splurge and get one with a battery. Of course, it'll add weight and girth to the phone, but IMO it's worth it.

And this is why one of the first things I do when I install an OS is turn that stupid feature off (if it's on by default). I can understand wanting to hide file extensions but it's super confusing that they hide them even when renaming the file.

Try out some ringtones from here:

It puts your wanted ringtone in the right format, time etc.

My gf just got an evo and I was/am freaking amazed at it. Sure, a lot of it is just bells and whistles but that doesn't make it any less cool? Am I wrong in feeling that our current OS is lagging behind android at the moment outside of the glaringly obvious (notifications). I would love to have an animated background on my phone. What are the odds of gmail being fully integrated into the phone? Google Nav anyone?

...And then you see the battery life and the occasional lag and you realize - an animated background is a little worthless.

I certainly would like widgets and Apple being a little more open with the APIs (although they have opened a lot), but I just had to help my friend with his Android again yesterday because Facebook was no longer syncing. A nice "syncing is experiencing issues" with no way to fix. Readding the syncing account doesn't work. His contacts stopped syncing with Google also and we had to backup and then delete them all to repull them from Google. Another friend couldn't download new Market apps until we cleared the cache. God, it's just like Windows...

Sorry, but you're never seeing those kind of BS things on iOS.

TAIPEI—Apple Inc. has placed orders for key components used in a next-generation iPhone it is preparing to launch sometime in the third quarter, according to people familiar with the situation.

According to some suppliers of components to Apple, the new version of the iPhone is expected to be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4 and sport an 8-megapixel camera. One person said the new iPhone will operate on Qualcomm Inc.'s wireless baseband chips. The current iPhone 4 uses memory chips made by Samsung Electronics Co. and baseband chips from German chip maker Infineon Technologies AG, according to a report by market-research firm iSuppli Corp. Officials at both companies declined to comment.
