The Last of Us - E3 extended gameplay demo

This is like the best thing...

I wonder if you can control the crouch. If the game always auto stealth's for you, that would take a little bit of the tension out of it moment to moment. But holy shit when things are full-on confrontation, damn dude. I know ND gets credit for being the most movie-like in their cutscenes and set pieces... but now their actual game is cinematic.

Mission accomplished bros.
 
Freakin unnerving watching thru this extended version...one moment you're sneaking out of sight from room to room, and when its down to just one guy left and you're the one who has a gun, he runs away and you become the predator chasing after him . The game does a good job at letting the pace be completely at your control. They've nailed the atmosphere and the lighting is simply gorgeous.
 
Oh damn I didn't notice Joel's nose got all cut up, I'm guessing from the desk smash. I'm pretty sure I saw blood running down his face too but I couldn't tell for sure.
 
It really reflects well on the game when you see it being played naturally and at a measured pace as seen in this video. It helps stave off all those "scripted" accusations, and lays bare how well designed it all is.

Edit - Taking the stealthy approach without a radar is going to be brutal. As if the game needed to be more intense.
 
Pretty good. A little slow but I'm glad ND decided to go with a more colorful apocalypse ala Enslaved.

The animations are really good.

Don't start to want something that you will regret. Rockstar showed about everything with MP3 in their every mini-trailer-tutorial thing they threw at us before was even out. I knew already about everything that was going into the game.
Prefer to see the rest of The Last Of Us on my couch with the game into my hands. Is enough already to know how the game works on some levels.

But if you refer just to where they are right now with the game progress, yeah I would want to know as well.

I was disappointed when they skipped most of that first room of enemies because I remember that being the room from E3 and I wanted to see how the encounters would change. I was ready to analyze every second of that footage lol.

Every time he attacked someone up close you could see how the game went into it's own sub routine. And while it does chose animations according to your surrounding I had hoped that the fights would be a bit more user controlled. I could be wrong and all these actions are player controlled (meaning you could stop mid attack and change weapon) but it just looked like once the attack was initiated there was a "movie" playing.

I'd love to be proven wrong though.

There's not much that will change about the scripted setpieces, but as long as they don't go overboard with those that should actually make the game more enjoyable.

I got to say though, the animations are just sublime. The way he choked out that first guy was amazing. The way his eyes managed to convey the terror and panic was just outstanding. Unlike Quantic Dream, Naughty Dog manages to get the whole body animation right and not just the faces sitting on top of a wooden and unexpressive body.

The sense of weight and physical presence in this demo is just simply groundbreaking.
I can't remember seeing or playing a game where the characters felt so grounded in the game world.

If they can clean up the Jaggies a bit, this is going to set the graphical standard for consoles period.

Overall, this is the demo they should've shown at E3. If you went only by the E3 demo one could think this game is a mere shooter with brutal finishers, when in fact it offers a lot more variety to it's encounters.

And then came prepared with molotov Lol.
Impressive stuff indeed.Probably the glow on objects won't be there on crushing.

See the problem is that guy made it out of materials you could have use.

While the combat wont be deep in melee, i guess we will be able to do the stuff you said in the game since we can do that in uncharted.

The camera angle makes it look like its a movie being played
 
I just hope this doesn't become yet another game where adding aliens/monsters/supernatural enemies ruins what makes the game good. We know they're coming at some point in this game but the encounters with the humans are perfect and intense. Just don't fall into the same trap so many other games have ND.
 
I can see why Kojima went by Naughty Dog a while ago.

Snake can learn something from those animations....

Absolutely stunning demo. If the game has little scenes like when Joel shot the last guy with the molotov, this is gonna be great.

The fact that enemies call out where you are is also a nice touch.

I also wonder if that sequence of gameplay is just going to be copy and pasted everywhere. I definitely like the way it looks but will it get old after the 20th time a guy grabs me and uses me as a human shield?

This is a great post, and you bring up a fair criticism... my thought is that even if these are little movies that you watch, the real gameplay is in the set up. You manipulate the situation to give the best possible outcome. So then the couple seconds of melee are more of an award for your strategy/reactions. I would argue this might even be deeper than some traditional gameplay, because you're manipulating dynamic, contextual systems in a way that I have not seen before. They just do not exist. Not in games of this type, with this kind of production value.

Of course, until we play it, this is some speculation... but right now I honestly do not give two shits if some of the melee finishers aren't very interactive once initiated. Just initiating them seems pretty interesting already. That seems like the real gameplay.

Yep, I'm anxious to see how they'll handle it. I imagine the stealth will be similar but with a more aggressive AI, but how the hell are they going to handle the melee combat with the zombies/infected/walking mushrooms?

That demo was stellar though.
 
the encounters seem like they can be tackled in a variety of ways. So even if this is a shorter title, it will be a blast going through and trying out different approaches. Looks like a highly stealthy playthrough might be possible.

They have actually made a great AI system which they were describing about in E3 and GI Interview.

Ill post it if you want where they said that every AI movements is dynamic based on the map and location of stuffs.

Looks great as usual but I honestly wonder if they've finished any other part of the game.

Oh that, yeah, but I don't have a problem with this, it's no different then execution kills. Once you pressed the Square on that situation that enemy is down. I don't think all fights will be like that though, only under certain situations, like having a wall/table near, or having a brick.

Hardly "heavy" scripting imo.

I'll take your word for it. My greatest concern about this game has been if my experience playing though is actually going to be like trailers being show. It good to hear that AI system is actually as good as it looks.

one of the first thing we got confirmed in first magazine previews is the existence of crouch button.
