The Last of Us Part II announced

I teared up when I saw the firefly logo, by far my favourite game of all time. The characters, the atmosphere and grittiness, speechless my god.
 
I've just finished watching the panel.

Man, those 3 sound so passionate about it. I love how they acknowledge the fear everyone has about a sequel lessinig the impact of TLOU1's ending and Neil outright says that he would not touch it if he felt there wasnt a story worthy of continuing it. He makes me much more confident about it, because he seems to understand more than anyone the game's legacy. He knows what he is doing!

I'm not trying to make it seem like anything. I guess I just assumed that seeing as how you shared a negative opinion on a public forum, that you'd be up to discussing it.

Well, I'm glad we can finally come to an agreement on the fact that a woman's voice doesn't necessarily have to change noticeably between the ages of 15 and 19, as Ashley Johnson voice so perfectly demonstrates for us :)

i like the idea of ellie as the main character. hopefully we get to play as her throughout most of the game instead of joel. i have a feeling he won't make it to the end of the game. probably gonna get killed off.

Which is a damn shame, but he's gotta pay for his sins I suppose, probably in a pathetic way of getting killed off. You're probably right that Ellie will be the playable one mostly, she's older, maybe now she can grab and strangle niggas

I like it, reminds me of the Godfather. Also like the Godfather, this game is a sequel to a movie than stands on its own and doesn't seem like it needs a sequel.
 
That new clip of music from the panel is the best part of this whole thing for me. I have an extremely up and down relationship with Naughty Dog's games, but more Gustavo Santaolalla music? Yesssssssss

Huh? From what I've read in this thread neogaf seems to be overwhelmingly positive about the announcement, where are these anti-TLOUP2 circle jerks you refer to taking place? I didn't at all say that I didn't like the direction or 'it should have been ____", in fact I started my post by saying I was excited for the game just like everyone else. All I said was that the sequel title, in my opinion, undermined the narrative impact of the original game, and I mentioned the negative connotations that it conjured up when I considered it (marketing requirements, developers pushed to work on a sequel instead of new IP, etc). I can't imagine why you picked my post to single out and condescend when I made it clear that it was written from a place of appreciation and respect for the experience of the original game.

Edit: Yeah, I'm a "random internet man", trying to respectfully communicate my opinion just like everyone else here. I apologize if my presence offends you.

Not exactly. Druckmann just said they spent the last few years trying to figure out what a sequel would be about. Planned from a financial standpoint maybe, certainly not creatively based on his own words.

Wonder how far they're taking this rather obvious nod to The Godfather. Will we play as young Joel in the early days of the outbreak? :P
 
I think people are underestimating what Ellie is capable of especially in the span of a 5 year period. We don't know what they've been through post LOU1 yet and how much she's changed.

She won't spend half an hour singing sweet lullabies into people's ears, it's just *snap* and they're gone.

Joel in his "rescue Ellie" mode (in both Winter and Spring) is not going to be topped easily.
 
Speaking of The Godfather, I am pretty sure Neil must be a huge fan of the movie.

If you think about it, the ending of both Godfather and TLOU works with a single premise. Of course, each with its nuances and creative direction, but both are very similar.

I don't understand how you can be OK with the direction of the game, but somehow not be OK with the title for the reason that it signifies the direction you previously said you were OK with.

If you've played the game, the definitive "narrative impact" has already been made. Even just watching the ending changes the narrative impact, and it'll change on repeat viewings, or when you're discussing it with other people, or thinking about it when you're in a different state of mind than you were when you watched it for the first time, or any other number of reasons. So how can a sequel truly change your impression of the ending, let alone the title of the game. Like, what are we complaining about here? Let alone the fact that we know literally jack shit about the game yet.
 
The original TLOU is the only Naughty Dog game in which ever really came to appreciate and enjoy the combat mechanics; UC4 actually felt like a big step backwards by comparison after the upgrade/holster system and the weapon variety in TLOU. One of my favorite aspects of TLOU combat was how visceral/intense the combat felt at higher difficulty levels, and how I felt like I was slowly achieving mastery of a complex system in an almost souls-like fashion. I hope they expand on that in a sequel, it seems like they could take it in a completely new and exciting direction with a smaller and more agile protagonist.

I guess you're right, to be honest, and I was wrong about point that in my response. I don't actually care for the direction of the sequel in terms of extending the story of Ellie/Joel, I wish the story were focusing on another time period or another character perspective. I felt like the Ellie/Joel story was masterfully handled/packaged in the original game, and I guess I feel a personal attachment to that narrative as a whole and I'm threatened by the prospect of returning to it and possibly diminishing it. I think that some stories are told so well the first time that there's a danger in revisiting them. Yeah, maybe I'm being irrational and/or ridiculous, but it's only because of how much I appreciate the original experience. It's not because I think I "know better" than the developers.

Why do people always gotta be like "NAH BRO PLAY ON HARD AND TURN ALL THE SHIT OFF EVEN THOUGH I DON'T KNOW YOU AND YOU MIGHT HATE IT!". If someone wants to play on a difficulty they should go with that. Playing how someone else thinks its supposed to be played is how people get turned off from a game.
 
Ah yes, loved the original game. Personally I would've preferred a new cast, but I'm intrigued by this installment all the same.

Let's see how the human world deteriorated lower after those five years. Love exploring the world in the original game.

I can't imagine that the last part of the game won't have any lasting affect on the relationship between the two.

I actually don't think people would be pissed off if it's only hinted at in passing, the franchise's understated storytelling was pretty well received.

I legitimately do not understand how anyone could recommend or enjoy listening mode. Absolutely everyone should turn that off.
