The Lumines hi-scores / unlockable skins thread

I've only played this game for like 2 hours and I'm already hitting 88k points. Oh how I love this game. This is my "Wario Ware" for PSP
 
Looking at the scores from the first page of this thread lets me know that I SUCK!!!!

LOL! Well...I have only played it like 10 times so far, so maybe I will get up to those scores one day.
 
For those new to the topic, and the game, the secret to high scores is simple.
Play the game, leave it alone for two weeks, and you will automatically be better at it next time you play it. It's like you're training your brain while you're not playing. Weird but true - everyone says the same.
 
For those of you who have reached "Lights", can anybody make a video with a few minutes of gameplay on the skin? I already own her single and have heard the song many times, but I'm curious to see what the skin looks like and how it interacts. Or maybe there's already a similar video out?
 
Some hidden gameplay rules, found by some insane Japanese guys here.

The skin changes after a certain number of "levels":
- up to level 60, a new skin every 4 levels
- from 60-100, a new skin every 5 levels

The number of blocks needed to increase levels varies from skin to skin:
- Shinin' 22
- Urbanization 16
- Round about 16
- Slipping 16
- Shake Ya Body 26
- Square Dance 16
- Talk 2 You 16
- Just... 14
- I hear the music in my Soul 26
- Dark side beside the river 18
- Aback 18
- Working in the hole 18
- Sister Walk 18
- Da-Di-Do 24
- Strangers 26
- Holiday in Summer 28
- Take A Dog Out A Walk 28
- Big Elpaso 30
- My Generation 32
- Meguro 32
- Spirits 32
- Get Up And Go 32
- Fly Into The Sky 32
- Lights 32
(this changes on the second run though!)

There's also two time released
one at 10 and one at 20 hours
, two from
puzzle mode
, and one from
locking the score at 999,999.
 
Played US version of Lumines for the first time last night - and already a new record!

US version really has no pauses in songs between the levels. Not sure if I really like that all that much. The 2-3 second pause added some drama, and the transition in visuals seemed to be more gradual, or maybe I'm just already so used to transitions that I don't notice them as much.

Aside from that, there's a nice retry feature everywhere you'd expect it to be. Namely, the puzzle mode and time attack mode.




Pedigree Chum, there's also 11 skins to unlock in "vs. CPU" mode (this is not US version speciffic, it's the same in Japanese version)
 
Alright. Fourth time with the game, and I more than doubled my score! Yeah, I know 33k isn't that much, but I did get 2 new skins!

Fucking awesome game!

You mean the retry after you lose? I'm looking for a retry option for when you mess up but don't see any...

I agree. Its been a long time I busted out the Lumines, and what do you know, new record! Reached Lights without "cheating"! :-D
 
My high score, culled from hours of time spent playing on the bus (a 30 minute ride isn't enough to finish one game now, rad) is 79,585.

Also, when I was talking to the president of Q Entertainment, I asked him how many skins there are in the game, and he told me 50. Is that how many people have unlocked? Cuz if not, maybe there is a deeper criteria for unlocking the rest? Dunno.

Also, no changes besides faster loading times between the JP and NA versions. Maybe this is common knowledge. Just throwin' it out there.

25 in Challenge mode.
11 in Vs.
2 in Puzzle.
2 time unlockables.

I'm not sure. That's why I asked. I did a double-take when he said fifty, but his English was really excellent, so, um, yeah. Maybe there's just some uber way to unlock ten more skins?
 
I guess we'll find out soon enough. Though it's hard to imagine a requirement any more uber than sinking in 20 hours or locking the high score at 999,999.
 
Man, I really suck at this game. I've only unlocked 3 skins so far. It's hard for me to play very long because the d-pad starts to kill my thumb.

Apparently he said Meteos has 40 planets, but it only has 32. So perhaps he has a knack for exaggerating.
 
I just broke 100k. 108,732 points...getting the hang of this game pretty quickly


I won't quit this game till I get 999,999 points.

Holy crap, I don't know if I should be cocky...I mean I haven't really been playing this game much, played for like 2 hours on Thursday, a hour yesterday and just played my first game today. Oh man, it's like the game is just clicking with me....I don't even have to think about where to put the blocks. Such an odd and awesome feeling

I would have gotten more points of the skin I was on wasn't so damn hard to differentiate the colors! Argh! (skin: Meguro)

This is owning me! GOTY! At this rate I should get 999,999 points by next week! :lol
 
I got 78,409 over a month ago and posted it in this thread. Sure, it's a sucky score, but it'd be nice to have my name there nevertheless.
 
FINALLY beat that 4x4 puzzle. Geez. It got a lot easier once I figured out that you can just
make a row along the bottom as well as along the sides

Having a hard time unlocking new skins now, since I just want to play the Music In My Soul skin over and over.

OK someone tell me how the fuck to do puzzle mode. I can't even beat the first level. How the fuck are you supposed to build a cross? The blocks split and fall, there's no way to make shapes like that....makes no sense.... >_<
 
How the hell do you people get these scores? I almost broke into dance when I got my lowly 33,000, I was on a roll :(

It will come to you with continued play...I started out barely breaking 8k, then 11, 15, then 25, then 30, 40, 60, 80 and now I just recently got 98k.

The unfortunate side effect of playing Lumines is that you will be mentally constructing colored squares in your head for the rest of your life.


Small price to pay I guess.

You just have to make the symbol using a single color, and none of the same color can directly touch it (side to side is wrong, but diagonally it's ok).

And in case you are trying to fill the background picture, don't (that confused me at first). You just need to make it using the pieces and it can be made anywhere on the game board.

OK so how do I do Create 4x4? I successfully managed to get 4x4 grey blocks without any other greys touching them but the game didn't accept that? What am I supposed to do here?

I got this:

x= grey o=orange

oxxxxo
oxxxxo
oxxxxo
oxxxxo

and the game didn't accept that.
 
Did you finish that before the scanner comes around? If you do it while scanner is in the middle of your blocks it wouldn't take it.

The game does accept that (though is hard as hell to get it), you possibly had another 'x' on top and didn't notice. What I do (did) is:

xxxx
ooooo
xxxxo
ooooo
xxxxo
ooooo
xxxxoooBOMB

and then just wait for a bomb block. Or rather, don't set up the 'bomb ramp' until you know which color the bomb block is. That's the easier way, specially on the second go.
