The (many) RPGs of 2014 - this is the year

Pillars of Eternity must seriously be the game I have been the most excited about in my life bar none... And I started gaming around the time of Chukkie Egg on my acorn electron (late 30s now). Seriously so hyped for it - remember being blown away by planescape torment, so much so that i wrote to the dev team to thank them! PoE cant come soon enough.

For you Durante :)

Yeah, there are a lot of RPGs I'm excited about, but PoE easily tops the list. In fact, it breaks the scale :P

For you Durante :)
Thanks, that makes it much easier. I'm still waiting until I have at least one other game ready to add, since updating the opening posts and table and everything takes some fixed amount of time so I'd like to batch the updates.

This thread is amazing so many games I had no idea about. I will check alot of these out. Thank you.

Awesome work, OP !!!! Helped a lot with soo many obscure games that
have some potential of becoming good games.

MAXIMUN HYPE for Persona 5 and Dark Souls II.

Moderate Hype for Pillars of Eternity, Bravely Default, Trails in the Sky, Witcher 3, X and Tales of Zestiria.

Some Hype for Dragon Age, Blackguards, Xillia II (will give a chance only if it have Dual Audio) and Drakengard III.

Hoping to see more Consortium impressions. Reminds me of Star Trek Elite Force(which I love), but I've seen a lot of reports that it's REAL buggy and the dialogue is weak.

It's less buggy than most games' initial releases which feature an equivalent level of interactivity. The bigger issue is that they announced saves will break with updates, so I'd wait a few weeks before playing it.

I posted some impressions in this thread. Spoiler: I like it.

With Might & Magic X coming out in a few days I whipped up an OT for it. Doesn't look like there is a lot of interest. Surprising given it's such a long lived and storied franchise.

Eurogamer posted an article about Divinity Original Sin. Might be my most anticipated RPG of the year, even over Pillars of Eternity.

I just played through the alpha with a friend, aside from a few crashes which is to be expected the game is incredible so far. I think I'm still more excited for Pillars of Eternity however, those last two released screenshots...

I've been looking into Consortium, the praise from the GAF thread has peaked my interest. I've heard it's pretty short though; I'll probably just wait for now as it seems some patches will be released shortly.

We need Pillars of Eternity. People have been waiting years for a modern Baldur'sArcanumDale.

More like Baldur'sDarklandsArcanumTOEEDale.

But mostly I'm excited to see Tim Cain in his element without the threat of impending studio-shutdown doom.

I wonder if things like Liege are too vague on the dates(They do say they'll release in 2014) to be counted here? Definitely high up on my list as far as upcoming RPG hype is concerned. SRPG with fluid transitions between world exploration and combat can't help but be awesome.

My list for the year:

x
Dark Souls 2
Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2
Drakengard 3

I doubt we'll see X actually come this year. We probably get a release date come E3. Until then, I've got a plentiful backlog to get through.

EDIT:

What's the word on Cyberpunk 2077?

Love the OP Durante. I think the most important thing to note is that you never played Mount and Blade. What.

Go fix that. Download the Floris mod.

I think Cyberpunk doesn't even start full production until the Witcher 3 ships.

Everytime I see a M&B gameplay video, I don't see ANYTHING resembeling a RPG. Maybe I watch the wrong footage...

Yeah, i told him the same. What the hell.

Yeah, you do.
It's the kind focused more on simulation than narrative, but it's a RPG from start to end.
Stats, companions, dialogues, stat checks, some overarching plot, etc.

the actual game play, looks more like Chivelary to me. Again, please shoot me a good video showcasing why it's a RPG and so good. ^^

Need to finish up Shadow Hearts 2 before I can dig into Blackguard.

Goddamnit Durante, why would you make my backlog even bigger? I can't hold all of these RPGs!
subbed

You really sold me on Might & Magic X: Legacy. I'll probably will look into it and buy it later at some point..

Mount and Blade embodies everything that is great about the PC platform as well as Western RPG design.

Totally open ended, you can make any story you want. The successful merchant, a Robin Hood character, a warmongering conqueror, a faithful vassal, you name it. The mod community is ridiculously huge and successful, spawning everything from overhauls to total conversions, to magic infused themes. Toss in the best melee/sword/whathaveyou combat this side of Chivalry, and you have yourself one of the finest RPGs ever made.

I'd play mount and blade if everything wasn't so goddamn clunky and unintuitive

that's a paradox game for ya tho.

I think Dragon Age will be the best RPG of the year, its what I'm most looking forward to thats for sure.

DS2 is second followed by The Witcher 3. Witcher series has done some great stuff in the past but the game needs to be more enjoyable to play, I don't have a lot of faith that this will be addressed. In terms of world building, Witcher 3 looks better than anything I've seen but it needs more than that.

My goty list is likely going to be:

Witcher 3 > Project Eternity (pillars of eternity, stupid name) > DA:I > Bravely Default > Dark Souls 2 > X ? > FF13-3 > Legend of Grimrock 2 > the rest I either don't really know, or aren't that hyped about.

edit: I take that back, I just watched the game trailer for Bound by Flame and boner status is orbiting jupiter. Mars War Logs was great, except for the ending...and the voice acting, and the fact the game was balanced poorly. Everything else was dope as fuck. Leave it to Spider to make a badass trailer.

It is worth the price of admission. The learning curve is steep, but it is simply a gem once it takes hold of you.

Great thread.

Only games from the list I will play for sure are South Park and Transistor.
I'm keeping an eye on Bravely Default and a few others, though.

Finished skimming the entire thread. I don't know how I miss this golden thread.
Trails FC has over twice as much text as Final Fantasy 12, which itself is a bit above average.

Trails SC has over twice as much text as Trails FC.

The third chapter fall between those two, but Zero and Ao no Kiseki each have more text than Trails SC. Not sure where Sen falls, but it's undoubtedly somewhere up there too.
I said
GOD.DAMN.
I think I have to take my Japanese course really serious

Meruru is a strong, independent character. Her father (the king) is a bit of a wuss. I don't know why a strong, independent character can't also look girly. Seems sexist :P

Then again I think the character art in Meruru is just fantastic, and not at all the typical generic moe style (like e.g. Neptunia)
Kishida Mel is one of my respected artist. His coloring is unique, and that makes him stand from the rest of "moe" designer. They changed the artist after the trilogy, but personally, they choose the right artist for the new series.
Esty in particular is probably my favourite female character design of the last console generation:

Not only you have good taste in RPG, but you also have a good taste in character.

From the minute or so I watched it looked like an MMO, a bit? But eh. Boring combat + no magic. What's the appeal again?
How do you gather this? From a video? Really? Are you sure? Do you even understand the mechanics of it?

Sometimes the arrogance of GAFers blows me away.

Then you ask "What's the appeal again?" in a very obviously condescending tone when there are descriptions in this thread, as if someone needs to take the time to convince you, because your limited view of the video didn't warrant the energy of using your finger to scroll on a page. Ugh.

It's more like War of the Roses, but ugly and clunky and buggy with a terrible UI. That new version of it looks a little more appealing.
