The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

I love Where Eagles Dare. The instrumentals, particularly the drums, are killer to me.

Flight of Icarus is pretty good too. Hallowed be thy name is probably my favorite because of Bruce Dickinson's awesome voice. I really like Iron Maiden's songs.

Yea, Where Eagles Dare is amazing. All guitars/bass/vocals depart drift off and do their thing then come back together after the solos while Nicko McBrain keeps them all together on beat….very Iron Maiden. Production wise, it's easily the heaviest Iron Maiden album. The pacing of the track listing is relentless too, with the only flaw being that stupid Quest For Fire song.

All this talk makes me want to post some old metal music videos:
Metal Church - Watch The Children Pray
Accept - Fast As A Shark
Voivod - Ravenous Medicine
Manowar - Gloves of Metal

Red Mirror, overall, feels much stronger than AtEoT, but outside of the opening/closing pair there doesn't feel like there's any particular standouts.

I like Quest For Fire a lot more than Sun & Steel. At least the music is good even if the lyrics are bad, Sun and Steel has that lame-ass chorus... the only Maiden song on the first 7 albums that I skip.

This one is a true grower I'd say (not entirely uncommon for modern BG though). There are plenty of stand out moments in between. I loved ATEOT but I think this one is much better (and better than the two before that).

That story though, I have no clue at all, haha (have yet to recieve my earbook, so who knows what it will clarify). But it sure sounds epic.

Iron Maiden's "Classic" albums are pretty weird. I've Noticed that there are always the songs everyone universally likes, and the other songs that often split Maiden fans. Nothing wrong with that, of course.

Found out the other day that Deicide is playing right down the road from me in March. I was totally into them in high school, and have always wanted to see them just for the sheer spectacle of it. I've been by the venue, and it looks really tiny from the outside. I'm going there next week for the first time to see Anvil.

Well, I was quick to change my mind on Parallex, but I"m still not ready to determine how I feel about it with more listens. Considering that I'm getting more listens out of Colors every time, I say it's going to happen.

Speaking of which, has anybody ever seen the whole album played live yet?

Esotis - Eternal Silence Of These Infinite Spaces

Kind of like if Tangerine Dream circa '82 made an atmospheric BM album. It's damn good.

Well, I suppose that depends upon what you are into! What bands/genre do you typically like?
Well. Stuff like Sepultura,Soufly, slayer,LoG stuff along those lines.. I took a long break from metal in 2006 and I'm just getting back into them. Also Black Metal.

Any of your local radio stations play metal?

Here in SoCal we don't get anything (LA area).

Maybe the occasional You've got another thing comin', and Enter Sandman but other than that metalheads get hosed.

Probably only college stations and satellite radio playing metal these days.

I used to go on my buddy's radio show in college and we would play nothing but metal. It was a blast. I have no idea if anyone was actually listening to us but I got a kick out of playing super satanic black metal songs on the radio.

Ah, I don't know if I can be of much help. I like old Sepultura and old Slayer though, so I'll toss up some Thrash-type stuff:

Venom - From The Very Depths : Grinding Teeth

Toxic Holocaust - Chemistry of Consciousness : I Serve...

Raped Ape - Land Of Broken Promises : The Krusher This is a compilation of old demos getting a 2013 remaster/release. They eventually changed their name to Paingod.

Power Trip - Manifest Decimation : Crossbreaker

Maybe some of this will tickle your fancy, maybe not :P

New Bumblefoot song from the upcoming album!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-Ylrm3Qr1M

Love it! :D

Guitar virtuoso, singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist and producer Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal will release his tenth CD, titled "Little Brother Is Watching", on February 24. The disc is an eccentric, upbeat collection of modern epic rock with haunting melodies, huge choruses and witty lyrics about life in the digital age and beyond. Specifically, his own life and coming to terms with what we all face — beginnings, endings, and moving on.

"Little Brother Is Watching" track listing:

01. Clots
02. Little Brother Is Watching
03. Argentina
04. Don't Know Who To Pray To Anymore
05. Livin' The Dream
06. Cuterebra
07. Higher
08. Women Rule The World
09. Sleepwalking
10. Eternity
11. Never Again

Rust in Peace wasn't really catching me until Tornado of Souls, and then it clicked for me and just got better and better.
I just wanted to chip in and say that Quest for Fire is like top-5 all-time dogshit Maiden songs, since it was brought up.
The Angel and the Gambler makes Quest for Fire sound like a masterpiece. 90s Maiden in general is really awkward to listen to; even the fun songs (Fear of the Dark) have cheesy bad lyrics. But nothing I've heard is nearly as bad as The Angel and the Gambler.

Haha. It was around Somewhere In Time that Iron Maiden got lazy with vocal choruses. Just about every song onwards was "Caught somewhere in time x5", "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son x5", "Fear of the Dark x5". I think the Brave New World album was the worst offender of this, but it's still a solid album. Didn't mind the bad lyrics as long as it was fun to sing along too.

90's Maiden is just awful, specifically Blaze Bailey era. I saw them perform at a large bar in San Francisco once and it was sad.

Anyways, here's your Metallica-inspired Overkill music video for the day:
Overkill - Elimination

Also, since I saw a thread about it elsewhere, which are the Metal albums you would give a 100 Percent (or very very close) to? The all killer, no filler albums.

Some of mine:
Effigy of the Forgotten
Unquestionable Presence
Ride The Lightning
Eternal Nightmare
Darkness Descends
Storm of the Lights Bane
Altars of Madness

Well, Slayer - Reign In Blood would be a 100% filler album.

Non-filler albums for me:
Sepultura - Beneath The Remains
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare
Autopsy - Severed Survival, Mental Funeral
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
The Crown - Deathrace King
Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East (this is cheating, but it's perfection)

I was starting to put together a list but it was just boiling down to me posting my top X metal albums. I can post that list though. All of these are 10/10 in my book.

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris
Deafheaven - Sunbather
Burzum - Hvis Lysett Tar Oss
Warning - Watching from a Distance
Sunn O))) - Black One
Ruins of Beverast - Foulest Semen from a Sheltered Elite
Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Nachtmystium - Assasins

I could probably come up with more. These are off the top of my head

The Japanese version is definitely perfection. The US version got screwed (until the 2001 re-release).

I was too accustomed to the US release. Hell Bent For Leather and Starbreaker are a definite welcome though, other 2 songs never cared for :\
Speaking of Unleashed In The East, someone needs to do a documentary on the myth surrounding the recording of this "live" album.

will think very hard about this on the way home from work. For now, the most obvious for me are all three of Order from Chaos' full-lengths.

It was more the recording style of the times. All those "live" albums from the 70s-80s had shit-tons of post-studio overdubs, from Sabbath to Rush to Ozzy to Kiss, etc. Everyone was guilty of it.

loool

Alestorm was my first metal concert, before I knew any better - they have a special place in my heart because of it.

I may have, uh, accidentally seen them twice since them, making them the band I've seen live most often (whoops). I have a strong feeling seeing them four times may be pushing it though, and I've heard nothing but bad things about the other band.

I wouldn't go if you paid me, but I'm having a pretty good laugh looking up the openers

It's nice they have hobbies, I guess

I would have gone merely to see Alestorm play Swashbuckled while the band it's ripping on was in the same building.

Also it's in Joliet, which is literally my least favorite place on the planet. Seriously, that city can walk naked backwards through a field of dicks.
One hell of a weird accident.

Speaking of which I need to arrange things so I can go to one of the concerts on the Kamelot + DragonForce tour
