Yea, Where Eagles Dare is amazing. All guitars/bass/vocals depart drift off and do their thing then come back together after the solos while Nicko McBrain keeps them all together on beat….very Iron Maiden. Production wise, it's easily the heaviest Iron Maiden album. The pacing of the track listing is relentless too, with the only flaw being that stupid Quest For Fire song.

Red Mirror, overall, feels much stronger than AtEoT, but outside of the opening/closing pair there doesn't feel like there's any particular standouts.
 
I like Quest For Fire a lot more than Sun & Steel. At least the music is good even if the lyrics are bad, Sun and Steel has that lame-ass chorus... the only Maiden song on the first 7 albums that I skip.

This one is a true grower I'd say (not entirely uncommon for modern BG though). There are plenty of stand out moments in between. I loved ATEOT but I think this one is much better (and better than the two before that).

That story though, I have no clue at all, haha (have yet to recieve my earbook, so who knows what it will clarify). But it sure sounds epic.
 
Iron Maiden's "Classic" albums are pretty weird. I've Noticed that there are always the songs everyone universally likes, and the other songs that often split Maiden fans. Nothing wrong with that, of course.
 
Found out the other day that Deicide is playing right down the road from me in March. I was totally into them in high school, and have always wanted to see them just for the sheer spectacle of it. I've been by the venue, and it looks really tiny from the outside. I'm going there next week for the first time to see Anvil.
 
Well, I was quick to change my mind on Parallex, but I"m still not ready to determine how I feel about it with more listens. Considering that I'm getting more listens out of Colors every time, I say it's going to happen.

Speaking of which, has anybody ever seen the whole album played live yet?

Well. Stuff like Sepultura,Soufly,slayer,LoG stuff along those lines.. I took a long break from metal in 2006 and I'm just getting back into them. Also Black Metal.
 
Any of your local radio stations play metal?


Here in SoCal we don't get anything (LA area).

Maybe the occasional You've got another thing comin', and Enter Sandman but other than that metalheads get hosed.
 
Probably only college stations and satellite radio playing metal these days.

I used to go on my buddy's radio show in college and we would play nothing but metal. It was a blast. I have no idea if anyone was actually listening to us but I got a kick out of playing super satanic black metal songs on the radio.

The Angel and the Gambler makes Quest for Fire sound like a masterpiece. 90s Maiden in general is really awkward to listen to; even the fun songs (Fear of the Dark) have cheesy bad lyrics. But nothing I've heard is nearly as bad as The Angel and the Gambler.

Haha. It was around Somewhere In Time that Iron Maiden got lazy with vocal choruses. Just about every song onwards was "Caught somewhere in time x5", "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son x5", "Fear of the Dark x5". I think the Brave New World album was the worst offender of this, but it's still a solid album. Didn't mind the bad lyrics as long as it was fun to sing along too.

90's Maiden is just awful, specifically Blaze Bailey era. I saw them perform at a large bar in San Francisco once and it was sad.

I was too accustomed to the US release. Hell Bent For Leather and Starbreaker are a definite welcome though, other 2 songs never cared for :\

will think very hard about this on the way home from work. For now, the most obvious for me are all three of Order from Chaos' full-lengths.

It was more the recording style of the times. All those "live" albums from the 70s-80s had shit-tons of post-studio overdubs, from Sabbath to Rush to Ozzy to Kiss, etc. Everyone was guilty of it.

Alestorm was my first metal concert, before I knew any better - they have a special place in my heart because of it.

I may have, uh, accidentally seen them twice since them, making them the band I've seen live most often (whoops). I have a strong feeling seeing them four times may be pushing it though, and I've heard nothing but bad things about the other band.

I would have gone merely to see Alestorm play Swashbuckled while the band it's ripping on was in the same building.
