The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

I was at Tesseract last night and I was pretty mind-blown by Nordic Giants, who were opening for them. Seriously, quite an amazing live show.

I'm pretty enthusiastic about USBM generally speaking but I never put much time into Cobalt. Something about their style always seemed weird or difficult to me. I'll probably give Eater of Birds and Gin full listens leading up to their new one.

I just found out about them and have been spending some time listening to Gin. Their sound is very different from all other USBM bands from what I have heard. I really dig it though, unique for sure.

Went to the Ghost concert for the 2nd time yesterday and it was even better.

Also, Orpheum in Graz is a fantastic venue.

I have no issue calling them metal, considering 60% of the music could easily come from something like Exivious and/or Intronaut. Admittedly haven't listened to them past their debut, but scoped a couple of random tracks and seems like that haven't changed all that much. Definitely wouldn't call them rock, that'd be like.. Circa Survive or if you're going all in, Mars Volta.

If anyone wants to have a really decent nap, give the new Ominum Gatherum a spin.

Looooooooooooooooooooordy, is it boring. Yet another band that has become derivative of themselves. A shame.

Yeah, it's nice. I was there twice in 2008. The first time was a Schandmaul concert, and the second time was Paganfest* on the very next day. Great weekend.

* Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani, Eluveitie, Tyr. What a lineup!

I'm waiting for it to be released on Spotify this week, but i listened to The Pit song from the new album and I liked, it's par for the course though.

Shamelessly plugging my fellow countrymen in Textures; but if you're into the whole meshuggah/proggy/djent thing check them out. They have been doing that since 2004, and their latest album is (imho) one of their strongest releases.

So Ghost went to the Grammys and won. I wonder how many outraged people this will produce lol

Congratulations to them though, all well deserved, even if Corey Taylor says grammys don't matter. :P

Seeing how atrocious the competition was, they fully deserved it haha. Good for them. Not that Grammys have any legitimacy, one of the worst awards ever.

Yeah, Grammys are a joke, and their Metal category....fucking LOL. Shit after shit after shit awarded every year.

At least Kendrick Lamar won best rap album (one of the best rap albums of all time), thank god for that. Fucking shit Macklemore beating him out two years ago. Fuck him.

And freaking Muse's Drones album won Rock Album of the Year. Good god there have to be at least 100 albums released better than that. Clearly these categories aren't judged on by anyone that gives a fuck.

Eh, I'm not one to really get worked up in all seriousness about the fucking Grammies. Grammies I just ignore them, although while I like the fact that Eminem (rightly) has like five grammies for best album or something, at the end of the day it doesn't really matter for me. It's just nice to see the awards get handed to good artists for a change.

LOL at Muse, LOL. Is that band even that good? Seemed like a shitty Radiohead rip off, which isn't saying much because Radiohead is a great cure for insomnia.

I don't get worked up about it. Just kind of find it pretty hilarious in a way. And I guess I feel bad for them, too. If they think that album is the best of the year, then goddamn they need to listen to some shit.

As for Muse, yeah I think they were good around Absolution but they fell fucking hard. Their last few have been well beyond trash.

Is there a single notable power metal release this year? I feel like there's nothing other than avantasia and rhapsody this year.

Last 2 years spoiled me.

How's the last Dark Tranquillity albums been received? I've loved Fiction, Damage Done and Character. I'd also be down for for significant change of course. They're certainly capable of it, looking at their past body of work.

Friend just updated me that I should kick myself for not going on Behemoth concert last Sunday. :(

. Clearly these categories aren't judged on by anyone that gives a fuck.

It is telling enough that they have only 'best metal performance' category...

I don't know what's the general opinion, but I like it very much. It's up there with Fiction, imo, altough it's a quite different style. I disliked We are the void if that matters to you.

Win what? I don't think they were nominated for anything. The only metal category is best performance.

They weren't?
I thought I had a decent grasp on how metal is represented in the mainstream. Guess not.
I thought IM had the name recognition behind them as well as BoS being a decent album all around.

I wasn't paying attention to the Grammies at all because nothing I care about will ever get nominated outside of the occasional DragonForce album, although I don't think they've been nominated since Ultra Beatdown when they were at their peak name recognition.

I'm seeing Symphony X on Thursday. Not really my thing (I remember enjoying The Divine Wings of Tragedy 15 years ago or so though) but a mate talked me into it.

What should I expect?

Man, I cannot wait for the new Cobalt. I was reminded of it today and listened to Gin for the first time in years.

A lot of cheese. I saw them with Overkill and it was probably the cheesiest thing I'd ever seen. That said, musically they were impressive to watch and for the most part, entertaining.

It's kind of the feeling i see with a lot of other fans too, but I hope you enjoy it either way.

I'm not a fan, but I've seen them a couple of times. All at festivals I think. The music was entertaining and people seemed to be into it, moreso than others band. Perhaps that also has to do with the fact that Ensiferums music is very suitable for festivals. I dont think they had a special show aside from some warpaint and barbarian esque outfits, but very little bands do somerhing special.

Probably not for MetalGAF, but I'm pretty much over the moon about Puscifer coming to Europe for the first time lol

Maybe there's hope for Tool now too...

Chicago-Open-Air-Admat-2.16.jpg

kinda wanna go friday for meshuggah & periphery and saturday for gojira & deafheaven, but damn the tickets are pricey just for two bands I want to see. friday one day passes have already sold out on tier 1 and 2 too..

plus I've seen meshuggah 4 times so I'm really on the fence.
