The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

It's definitely the closest thing I've heard recently to the Sunlight Studios cranking the knobs on the HM-2 to 10 thing

Also the riff at 2:22 is absolutely disgusting in the best way

Ah man pretty fun, not too bad. I welcome anything Sunlight Studios/Stockholm worship.
Repugnant was the closest thing i've found that harkens back to that era. And of course Death Breath, but that's cheating.

Here's Repugnant covering Morbid's "Another Vision"

Tombs is one of those bands that I like, but have always been pretty ambivalent about them — take 'em or leave 'em kind of thing. There's a track out from their next album (out June 10), though, and I think it might be the best thing they've done yet. Has kind of a Nachtmystium-vibe to it.

"Edge of Darkness"

Whoa, this is sick. I haven't been able to get into Tombs up until now but it sounds like Savage Gold might convert me.

Mannnnn.

New Anubis Gate is so goddamn good.
asdhflkahjdl;fkajdfkja uh what???

Their self titled from 2011 was one of my favorite albums from that year. And, of course, Andromeda Unchained is super badass.

Son of a bitch, what an excellent thing to wake up to! So is the new album out already or what?

Name your band after a Dismember song then play that style of death metal and you'll grab my attention.

Skinfather
Then you should listen to Deathevokation

I think part of the appeal with Repugnant is that they don't try to ape the sunlight sound.

Verminous is another band that play old school style death metal without simply copying the sunlight sound.

Thanks for the reminder, I added it on Rdio and just never got around to it. Perhaps it'll be my playlist at the gym this evening.

I never seemed to like the self titled that much (had lower expectations too after hearing the previous singer left), maybe I'll listen to it again to refresh my memory of it.

Pleasantly surprised by new Gamma Ray album

Hell yeah, I love it.

It may not be a Metal album per se...but close enough.

This, IMO is hands down one of the most underrated Rock albums ever. Nearly every song is a damn classic. Anyone else a fan?
+1
I really like heavy guitar and clean vocals. In today's music, it's useless to try and dry a line where hard rock ends and metal begins. That's why I don't like attaching labels and sub-genres to metal. Most bands tune lower than standard and there's plenty of double bass drumming, even in "hard rock." Aggressive instruments, aggressive vocals and lyrics, and songs full of riffs = metal.

Nice pics for Godflesh, that's one band I really want to experience live. Also concerning Godflesh, weren't they supposed to be releasing a new album? It was originally dated for 2013, but obviously it didnt make it. I haven't heard anything about it, anyone know more?

God this riff is so awesome.

The article said Justin waned to release it in May, but I doubt his prediction was right.

Going back and listening to Death Angel's The Dream Calls For Blood. Never game it much of a listen last year.

Damn its so good. Death Angel are massively underrated.

just wow, that is some awesome history! The South American scene is always as true as they come.

now here's a lethal Peruvian classic, Hadez - Aquelarre.

Yeah, it was amazing to see them play live after all these years. Some pics from the gig can be found here, including Witchcraft (ex-Black Feast) from Finland, who were great as well. Here's one of their older songs, Celebration of Death. Pure Beherit worship.

Mystifier:

Witchcraft:

fuck man, Mystifier would have been cult as fuck to see live. One of the few bands that would give me the creeps to see live along with Beherit and Blasphemy.

Autopsy - Severed Survival is 25 years old today. 25 years stricken with a horrible disease!

I've actually managed to see Blasphemy, Autopsy, and Absu here in Finland, during the past few years. So, that's some of the bigger names crossed out from the bands-to-see list. Unfortunately, I missed Beherit during the old days, as I didn't have a driver's license back then to go to the gigs. They haven't performed live since 1993, IIRC.

I always come back to Cor Scorpii after everything else.

M-A says they're still active, so I'm patiently waiting for a new album.
FYI, a band status (active, split-up, etc.) on M-A is always the last known status. Our policy is basically that it's better to have outdated info than inaccurate info, so until the band is confirmed to be split-up, we generally keep it "active" (sometimes if there has been no news for years and years we may put "on hold" or "unknown".

I don't know the specifics of this particular band, mind you. And I don't want to dash your hopes, but don't hold your breath on a new album on account of the M-A status. :)

just got tickets to see Agalloch in Toronto in July. So excited for their new album! Anyone see them live?
Yes, they're fantastic. Seeing them again in July in Boston!

Out as of April 15, mang.

It's truly fantastic. Somehow more accessible, more progressive, catchier, deeper... All at the same damn time. Some of their compositions are just amazingly put together. The standouts of the album are simply as good, if not better than anything they've put out.

Sure, not every song is incredible, but if that were the case, I'd probably explode.

My vote goes for Withstand the Fall of Time and Where Dark and Light Don't Differ as my favourite Immortal songs. At the Heart of Winter is so good <3 Anyone know whether there is any news about a new album, its been 3? years since All Shall Fall.

Also my copy of Tryptikon - Melana Chasmata finally shipped. I'm listening to Eparistera Daimones right now, such a great album. I love this blend of doom/black/thrash, along with Celtic Frosts Monotheist. Are there more bands like this?

I've only seen them once (in 2012/2013), but they were amazing! Definitely something to look forward too.

Dude, you aren't kidding. I grabbed it the day you brought it to my attention and have listened to it twice so far. It's amazing how consistent the band is. I absolutely love it so far, and it's *probably* my favorite album of the year at the moment. Thanks again SO MUCH for pointing out that it existed. That very same day you made that post I also found out the new Blind Guardian album was delayed to 2015 (no surprise, but it still made me want to tie a brick of lead to my waste and jump in a river), so I needed a good metal pickmeup :D

I dunno, but I like how many damn genres it falls under on Wikipedia.

Love this album. Probably my favorite Immortal album alongside At The Heart of Winter. Sons and Pure Holocaust are excellent as well, too.

The two first albums are my favorites, don't really care about the rest to be honest. The atmosphere just isn't the same. I think the first one was the most versatile album, as the many of the later ones rely too much on blast beat. Which is why As the Eternity Opens is my favorite track on Pure Holocaust. The lyrics are somewhat amusing though; "Floating evil reign with fear in these sarcastic caves". =D

No problem! Great albums generally have a way of finding you, so you wouldn't have been deprived for too long :) Glad you're enjoying it. It's all I've been listening to for the last week. Like you said, they're ridiculously consistent and then some, which is all the more amazing when you consider how unique and mature their sound is. I just can't see them putting out a less than stellar album.

Henrik is such a rad vocalist. I like Jacob, but Henrik and AG are beyond a perfect match. And the new members are great, too; especially the drummer. He isn't afraid to sprinkle ghost notes and general dynamics here and there, which the ex-drummer didn't do at all. Adds a lot to that thick blanket of sound they're so good at conjuring up.

Bummer about BG. I went a bit dark on them after ANATO. Are they very much in the same vein as the follow-up to ANATO? I feel as if they've dumbed down their sound a bit. Kinda like Vanden Plas with their latest :(

Joker is too cheerful for DSBM :P

What are the rest
melo black: The Crow
Blackened death: ?
Industria:; Hellraiser
Gothic: ?
Symphonic: ?
Viking: ?
Epic/atmospheric: Sauron
Pagan: ?
Nazi: Dead Snow
Raw: Orlok from Nosferatu
Thrash: Beetlejuice

Out of all of those movies, is it OK if I like Nosferatu the best out of all of them? Seriously, that movie is outstanding, one of my all time favorites (the Herzog movie is excellent as well, but I like the original the most).

Also, it's fitting, considering that the old fashioned silent format makes the film all the creepier. I should watch it again.

Gothic is from Dracula, I do know that. The Coppola movie. It's.....flawed.

Those were the ones I knew.

The original Nosferatu from 1922 is a wonderful film. The Crow would be better suited for gothic BM.
