Maiden is incredibly melodic and catchy and accessible. Its pretty much the pop music of metal. Which isnt even meant as an insult because writing catchy songs is quite hard.

That is a wrong assessment of Maiden though, there was pop metal like shit cretins Bon Jovi/ Poison. Iron Maiden were never apart of that crowd even with their seminal pieces, catchy as they may be, even Seventh Son should not be considered pop metal, that is one catchy album

Tetragrammacide - Typhonian Wormholes

Not sure how I feel about this. Its pretty much straight up war metal but with that production it might as well be harsh noise, you'll see what I mean. The drums do sound like like a jackhammer so that's pretty sick.

oh yeah, I remember this album haha. That's exactly what I thought as well. It works for this style of music pretty well I think, but that might just be me. On that note, some other releases are coming back to me.

Intolitarian (USA) - Deathangle Absolution

ultra noisy, slightly experimental take on grind/black/death.

Nechbeyth (SGP) - Blood.Axis.Domination

these guys have an EP in 2014 but I didn't find it nearly as ripping as their debut LP. I actually traded a Deiphago shirt with I believe Zavael for their CD back then. Ultra high fucking gain, totally maniacal performances, and just a perfect album for the style.

Nuclearhammer (ON) - Serpentine Hermetic Lucifer

honestly, I think this album is a masterpiece and it certainly deserves more attention. It somehow combines relentless war metal aggression with a more meditative, traditional black metal approach and it totally works for me. Coupled with the fact that it just sounds super organic, I can listen to this album any time, any day and give it a full listen.

Genocide Shrines (LKA) - Manipura Imperial Deathevokovil: Scriptures Of Reversed Puraana Dharmurder

filthy, doomy, and while relatively sophisticated structure wise , still within the war metal realm.

All about practice! At a certain point I got bored with trying to learn cool sweep picking solos like everyone else on Youtube so I just focused on trying to play rhythms as tight and fast as possible.

Jawbreaker is the best Priest song.

This is exactly my thought. Iron Maiden is NOT Pop, they are just melodic and very inventive with their melodic songwriting.

I feel like today's power metal is way more over-the-top and operatic in delivery.

I'm not a Power Metal fan either, unless it's mixed with something like Death Metal (Wintersun and early Children of Bodom for example). When Metal is that souring, epic, and melodic, I need some edge/darkness added to it.

this is sort of a bonus rec for people who are way into the Celtic Frost tone. This is a much more trippy, dissonant, and challenging release but it's a classic in my mind. It was also blessed with killer new artwork for the recent Nuclear War Now! reissue.

What's your opinion on Pale Communion? Because when I first heard it a couple of years ago, I felt it was shit. Now I think it's the shit. But I am cautious - Opeth has been pretty inconsistent with its output since Deliverance.
