The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Maiden is incredibly melodic and catchy and accessible. Its pretty much the pop music of metal. Which isnt even meant as an insult because writing catchy songs is quite hard.

That is a wrong assessment of Maiden though, there was pop metal like shit cretins Bon Jovi/ Poison. Iron Maiden were never apart of that crowd even with their seminal pieces, catchy as they may be, even Seventh Son should not be considered pop metal, that is one catchy album

A good way to check if something is a pop song is if Kelly Clarkson could sing it

Wasted Years? Absolutely

Jawbreaker? No chance, only real metal here fam

Well a with little browsing around and I've found:

Tetragrammacide - Typhonian Wormholes

Not sure how I feel about this. Its pretty much straight up war metal but with that production it might as well be harsh noise, you'll see what I mean. The drums do sound like like a jackhammer so that's pretty sick.

oh yeah, I remember this album haha. That's exactly what I thought as well. It works for this style of music pretty well I think, but that might just be me. On that note, some other releases are coming back to me.

Intolitarian (USA) - Deathangle Absolution

ultra noisy, slightly experimental take on grind/black/death.

Nechbeyth (SGP) - Blood.Axis.Domination

these guys have an EP in 2014 but I didn't find it nearly as ripping as their debut LP. I actually traded a Deiphago shirt with I believe Zavael for their CD back then. Ultra high fucking gain, totally maniacal performances, and just a perfect album for the style.

Nuclearhammer (ON) - Serpentine Hermetic Lucifer

honestly, I think this album is a masterpiece and it certainly deserves more attention. It somehow combines relentless war metal aggression with a more meditative, traditional black metal approach and it totally works for me. Coupled with the fact that it just sounds super organic, I can listen to this album any time, any day and give it a full listen.

Genocide Shrines (LKA) - Manipura Imperial Deathevokovil: Scriptures Of Reversed Puraana Dharmurder

filthy, doomy, and while relatively sophisticated structure wise , still within the war metal realm.

True. Apparently Adrian Smith was hesitant to play his Wasted Years demo to Steve Harris cuz he thought it would be too "mainstream" for Maiden, but apparently Steve liked it. I tried playing Jawbreaker the other day - the downpicking is brutal on that song.

All about practice! At a certain point I got bored with trying to learn cool sweep picking solos like everyone else on Youtube so I just focused on trying to play rhythms as tight and fast as possible.

Jawbreaker is the best Priest song.
No lies detected.

Pop isn't the only style of music that can be catchy and melodic. Jesus fucking christ... >_<

This is exactly my thought. Iron Maiden is NOT Pop, they are just melodic and very inventive with their melodic songwriting.

I feel like today's power metal is way more over-the-top and operatic in delivery.

I'm not a Power Metal fan either, unless it's mixed with something like Death Metal (Wintersun and early Children of Bodom for example). When Metal is that souring, epic, and melodic, I need some edge/darkness added to it.

I love Power Metal myself. For me, a good melodic chorus will always beat a disposal, yet catchy chorus.

My man. Hair Metal, especially the second wave shit, will forever be the worst type of Metal.

Though I went back to early Ratt and Motley Crue, and it's not as bad as its reputation lets on. Later Crue is garbage, though.

Ratt is good stuff, exceptions to every rule

Like it or not, Iron Maiden are pop-metal. Pop stands for popular. Stop ten randoms on the street and ask them to name a metal band and chances are most will name Iron Maiden or Metallica. I love Iron Maiden btw.

And post-punk is of course any music that chronologically comes after punk, because we must consider genre tags literally at every time.

Oh wait, that's stupid and unhelpful...

I love Ratt. Warren De Martini rips. But yeah I can only stomach the first 2 Crue albums. The power ballad phase in hair metal is some of the worst music in recorded history.

Just saw between the buried and me play their latest album, they were fucking amazing as always.

The crowd was fucking awesome, best moshpit I've ever been part of.

Can't wait to see them again eventually.

I would surprised if the live show WASN'T good.

Dude, you're going to have a blast when you go see them, as if you already didn't know it.

As soon as the coma machine started I jumped in the pit and didn't get out until they stopped playing. Great night. Wish their were the closing act though, might have gotten an encore, maybe Selkies or white walls. Still, fucking loved the show.

Kind of hoping they go before Fallujah. Don't care about that band.

So you hate fun and good things?

Well, Nu-Metal doesn't have a single good band....

Nah man, the first three Mudvayne albums are genuinely great metal. Also, go listen to Slipknot's Iowa album and tell me it's not great.

I hated all nu metal until i had both bands played to me blind. I was shocked as hell when i heard Iowa in particular.

Mudvayne aren't even particularly "nu-metal" anyway. Especially not their 2nd and 3rd albums.

Mudvayne I've never considered Nu-Metal though, more like Alt Metal. Never liked them. Iowa.... I'll pass.

Malleus (MA) - Storm of Witchcraft

killer, killer Celtic Frost worship from Boston. A true blackened rager, this one. Total hails and support to these guys. Just dropped today!

Doom Snake Cult (NV) - Love, Sorrow, Doom

this is sort of a bonus rec for people who are way into the Celtic Frost tone. This is a much more trippy, dissonant, and challenging release but it's a classic in my mind. It was also blessed with killer new artwork for the recent Nuclear War Now! reissue.

Hellyeah is such a heavy band, i hope the crowd will take In Flames well.
Forged in Fire

The Misfits reunion was pretty lit, fam. Hail Danzig. Rob Zombie doing Astro-Creep in full was awesome as well, despite having to watch from the other stage to not be a football field away from Misfits lol

Checked out Sorceress and yeah I dunno dudes. there's a lot there and some good tracks and I'll need a few listens but it feels really inconsistent and I don't like that.

What's your opinion on Pale Communion? Because when I first heard it a couple of years ago, I felt it was shit. Now I think it's the shit. But I am cautious - Opeth has been pretty inconsistent with its output since Deliverance.
