The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

yeah I am bay area technically, and speaking of the bay area:

not sure if I can make it out but I'm definitely gonna try. I also hear Revenge is setting up a tour next year with Watain and Mayhem.

Revenge is too fucking kvlt, too bad I won't be around for this. The Elbo Room is a fucking sweaty pit too, haha. I'd probably pass out from the intensity and lack of oxygen there.

Horrendous - Ecdysis

Quite surprised how much I'm enjoying this one. At surface level, this is definitely Scandinavian style OSDM (as well with influences from some American acts), nothing new there. However familiar it may be, this album still feels fresh. Fortunately, the band does their part to innovate within their style and succeeds in rising above the caveats of playing in a retro style. What is notable about this release is that the higher level of songwriting and musicianship gives the album more depth than your average new wave of OSDM record. It's not revolutionary, but a step in the right direction. A pretty damn enjoyable record, and a respectable addition to the death metal canon.

this is fucking sick

edit: hahahahah that riff 50 seconds into nepenthe is the most carcassy fucking thing

You can never predict that with any concert that isn't televised or aired in some platform.

Even major concerts can have a tendency to run late or long on any given night.

If the show is advertised to start at 8pm, expect it to start at around 9, the opener to go on for an hour or so, Kind Diamond won't see the stage till 10:30 or 11 and you might not get out till 12 - 1am depending.
Lol I'm gonna have a great Wed morning at work.

Cool, a metal thread! I am a metal and (progressive) rock fan, so I will keep an eye on this thread.

My favourite metal bands:

-Blind Guardian (already ordered the single on vinyl and my tickets for the 2015 tour)
-Symphony X (love their more recent and more metal approach as well)
-Iron Maiden (my favourite band of the older greats)
-Dream Theater (took me some time to like Labrie, but now I am a huge fan. Saw them this year, they are in fantastic shape now. They have done many different things, and I like most of it).
-Wintersun/old Ensiferum (basically anything Jari. Hope the guy manages to get his issues sorted out.)
-Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon and Star One. So many different talents involved and used in a fantastic way)

Other things I love: Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Evergrey, old Iced Earth (and their latest), Old school In Flames, Anthrax, Dio, Opeth, Seventh Wonder etc.

Welcome brother! It is nice to see another power metal fan in here.

One recommendation, have you heard of Galneryus? I'd imagine you'd like them. They are the band that got me interested in power metal.

The budget fuzz pedal (or maybe I'm hearing that shitty Boss Heavy Metal pedal) distortion is gross, though.

you must not listen to a lot of Swedish death metal if you're not down with the HM-2 sound.

Satan and King Diamond are also rolling through this month, but I'm most likely gonna go 0 for 3. Last show I caught up in SF was Black Witchery although I was mainly interested in seeing Diocletian who got lost on the way lol. Schedule these days is just too brutal.

King Diamond tonight! First time seeing him in 11 years. So excited!

Incidentally, yesterday night I also attended a concert... but it couldn't have been more different than the one I'm attending tonight, haha. (It was also incredible, of course.)

Yup! Sorry I totally forgot to respond to your previous post about them!

Ha ha, no worries. It's thoughtful of you that you remembered from that long ago.

Anyway, why did it take me so long to listen to Sol Niger Within? Not quite on the level of Meshuggah, but there's some amazing stuff on that album.

Nice find, I just put in an order for the CD with Dark Descent, thanks!

So Diablo Swing Orchestra released a song with their new singer and it's very... disco?

This might take some getting used to.
Not minding the singer but this disco beat is ... I'm not sure if it's just strange or plain bad. What happened? Last time I heard from them was the album Sing Along... Quite some quange.

King Diamond was absolutely phenomenal last Friday. So sad for people who are gonna miss out on this. They even played
two Mercyful Fate songs! As someone who never had the chance to see Fate live, this was really cool. The crowd went absolutely nuts too. Hope there's a real reunion in the works... Oh and Cremation too, I didn't expect that, but it was absolutely perfect, with the stage props too. <3

Here's the setlist for Montreal, if anyone's curious:
http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/king-diamond/2014/olympia-de-montreal-montreal-qc-canada-5bccf7b4.html
I think the order is not 100% right though. IIRC, the medley was followed up immediately by
Evil
, not
At the Graves
(though they did play
At the Graves
but I can't remember the exact order).

Awesome! So excited for Tues.

How was the opening band?

I'm still somewhat curious, so I'll listen to it. Didn't like the new single, though.
Me neither. The titular song kinda clicks better in the big picture when listened as a part of the album instead of a single song.

If I had to say the album is more akin to Terminal Spirit Disease instead of Slaughter of the Soul. The songwriting is a more diverse. Dare I say progressive? I need to put in a few more listens, but the whole definately a lot better than what the single let me expect. Maybe not an instant classic, but I'd be a happy man if a band put out similar output every two years or so.

How was the opening band?
It was Jess and the Ancient Ones, a psych rock band from Finland. They were pretty good. I knew nothing about them. Some of their songs dragged on a bit, but they had some pretty epic moments too. Definitely worth arriving early to catch, at least.

And certainly a million times better than the opening band from 2003, which was by far the worst opener I ever had the displeasure of hearing. xD Some uber-shitty industrial rock band from Texas with the worst female vocalist ever. Urgh, I'll sadly never purge this from my memory, it's like a trauma. xD

Not too much. At the beginning yes, lots of drunk (already) morons shoving randomly too, as per usual, but they tend to tire quickly and it settled down after a while. Don't stay too deep in the middle though, or you'll get slammed from all sides when the show starts.

I know there are a few Chicagoans here, question about The Vic. Do you need special tickets to sit upstairs or can you just walk up there and take a seat?

i listened to three songs before shrugging and going back to the new rigor mortis

How are you enjoying the new Rigor Mortis album? Shining moment for Mike, really amazing professional musicianship displayed on it. I don't think the overall songwriting does enough to remain memorable to me, it does not draw enough atmosphere from the lyrics like the debut that Bruce Corbitt was so good at executing. It is one of the better releases among an established Thrash act this year though, and I think it will continue to grow on me as I blast it more and more.

The guitar tone is really thin and that detracts from my enjoyment of the album a fair amount, but I really enjoyed how some of the songs leaned more towards the speed metal end of things as I feel like not as many of the more mainstream thrash bands I get exposed to do that as much.

Also the last track is really meandering and kind of forgettable, I think I'd have left it off of the album.

EXODUS Singer Says 'Big Four' Of Thrash Metal Is Really 'The Big One And The Other Three'

Choice quote:

"Personally, I don't pay attention to that necessarily," he said. "I was in the Bay Area in the beginning, before I was even a member of EXODUS, so I remember who was the forefathers of thrash. I mean, Tom [Hunting, EXODUS drummer] invented that drum beat. That [guitar] picking style was from Gary [Holt, EXODUS guitarist] — that's where the genesis of that came from.

"I think what [the media] did [when they came up with the 'Big Four'] was they took the four bands who were probably the most successful in the initial period of thrash metal — from, say, '85 or '84 to '90. If you were to go off popularity, if you were gonna go off record sales, you would have to say ANTHRAX, MEGADETH, METALLICA and SLAYER.

"Now, when you ask me that question, this is what I say: it's 'The Big One And The Other Three.' Sorry. Neither one of those bands — and I love every single one of them… But METALLICA sits on their own. So, to say the 'Big Four'? I don't know if you can say that. You have to say 'The Big One And The Other Three.'"

Thoughts?

Well yeah if your going by sales and popularity Metallica trumps them all. They really are the big 'One'.

In fact those Big 4 shows would never have gotten off the ground without Metallica. The other three wouldn't be able to draw that kind of crowd at those types of venues.
