The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Jesus, that's a lot. I'm cheap, so I stream albums on Youtube LOL. I can't even imagine buying that many albums within a year.

nothing wrong with listening to albums on YouTube, I do it all the time. I wish more albums were available on Bandcamp, too. To clarify, $400 spent, not 400 records haha. That money is normally expendable but for the past several months I've been putting $500 every two weeks into my car to get it paid off faster. I officially don't have a payment due until December 20th since I'm paid so far ahead, so I'm taking a short break and rewarding myself with some metal yeahhhhh. I'm still planning on having the whole thing paid off by the end of the year. Got like $1500 left on it. 5 years of pain, over.

from some of the stuff I've been picking up, here's a rec:

Dream Death - Journey into Mystery.

DOOM THRASH.

I'm spending way too much money on records. I think over 400 since the beginning of the month... #dead

October is becoming the month to bankrupt me, not only am I going to tons of shows, some crazy amount of albums coming out as well. Good month to be a Metalhead.

Great Album! Have you heard the one they released last year?

actually no unfortunately. I've been relatively out of the loop when it comes to older bands and their newer releases. It was actually being sold from the same distro I just got their demo compilation from but I decided to hold off on it. Good stuff?

Looking forward to the new BG single and album.

Has there been any news on the new Sigh album? I don't find new music often, so occasionally I search for bands I used to listen to just to see if they've released new stuff. Makes me sad to see that a lot of them have disbanded, though.

I enjoyed it, not the same as their debut but still very doomy, hits you nice with good headphones with the bass. That Celtic Frost influence is still apparent, but the direct thrash energy is not in the new album, very much its own monster, and worth a listen.

New Blind Guardian in Jan!!!

Good. Good.

Oh shit, I honestly thought 400 records, yeah that's not quite as bad. I'm not sure how much my record collection is worth, but I'm sure I have spent a sizable amount of money. Frankly though, I don't see it as a negative; music is one of the things in which the investment always feels right.

nice to hear. Will definitely check it out. It's funny you mention bass because I was sitting down with a few LPs yesterday and thinking to myself how my current analog setup is not delivering in that regard. Gotta get some fat speakers for the DOOM.

I wouldn't believe anyone who said they got 400 albums in 10 days unless it was all water-damaged deadstock of St. Anger CDs from a flea market in Taiwan lol. But seriously, yeah no doubt it feels good to drop on music. Just supporting bands/labels in general. A collection of MP3s and YouTube playlists is worth precisely nothing.

I'm a broke college student. Buying lots of records and CDs is not very feasible for me right now, so I'm quite happy with my large collection of MP3s. I do have a pretty decent CD collection at least.

I read that as 400 records at first and I was like DAMN. I feel like a chump though as I haven't bought anything since earlier this year. Getting some preorders next month but other than that nada. I gotta buy some shit.

Someday I'll own a collection of physical albums in the thousands...

Soon as I start working again I'll resume my physical collection. Love record store hopping.

this is the attitude that I like. I mean whatever, download here and there, sure. I'm sure everyone knows what it's like when the money is tight and I'm not trying to say shame on you to anyone who doesn't spend hundreds of dollars a week on music. If you at least make an effort, cool.

gonna go walk my dog and then take a few snaps of some new pickups. BLACK WAX DOMINATION.

You're in the Bay Area aren't you? What stores have you been hitting up?
Amoeba, Shaxul, and Aquarius were my go to store.

The greatest festival in the world just released their first batch of 19 bands (of 90 in total) for next summer:
sPhkZtB.jpg
Best band on that list for me is Toto :D
Mötley, Priest, HF, DAD and HEAT I have seen before, and the others' discography will be investigated thoroughly!

Shadow Kingdom and Dark Descent links are busted. Those are some of my go-to distros.
Oh, wow. Shadow Kingdom completely revamped their store architecture and didn't even bother contacting us about it. Well, whatever, I removed them because they never bother paying us anyway. Not the first time they're behaving in thoroughly unprofessional ways, sadly.

Dark Descent, we promote for free because the owner is a friend and former mod of M-A, so we get no revenue from them, but that's fine. But again, didn't bother informing us of their store URL changes. -_- Well, that one was more easily fixed at least.

Thanks for the heads-up.

blah, doing more running around than I had planned so I just took an overall shot. My music is all a hot mess right now, but I kinda like it like this lol. Second one is a close up of some of my more KVLT items.

I've never had the pleasure of checking out Shaxul nor Aquarius and I've only been to Amoeba a handful of times. Amoeba is hands down the sickest brick and mortar record shop I've ever been to, though. I mostly just check out Rasputin in Stockton and Campbell since those are my hangouts. I usually don't come away with much though, if anything a couple CDs from time to time. I hope eventually more underground labels get supported by stores like this. So yeah, most of my distro hopping is online.

yeah I am bay area technically, and speaking of the bay area:

not sure if I can make it out but I'm definitely gonna try. I also hear Revenge is setting up a tour next year with Watain and Mayhem.

From Timeghoul's facebook

wow.

I love record shopping, but I'm sad that records stores seem to be dying out (at least around here). Also where I live there's no store that has a good metal selection anymore. Used to have one, but it closed a couple years ago (along with two others in the last five years).

Last time was a week ago, got the following:

Aborym - Generator
This one has been on my wishlist for quite a long time, finally bought it. My favourite industrial black metal release.

http://youtu.be/hmbi8uAbuyE

Anathema - The Silent Enigma
Another that has been on my wishlist for a while. I'm a big fan of Anathema, primarily Alternative 4 and Judgement. Very nice, emotional death doom.

http://youtu.be/CexBzf4DC4M

Asphyx - Last One on Earth
I know about Aspyx, but I only listened to the 2009 comeback album Death...The Brutal Way. I didn't like that one, but wanted to have a look at the early releases... Some five years later I have. Old school Death (doom), it's ok, fun, not really special.

Babylon Whores - King Fear
I think a GAFer introduced this band to me, though I didn't know much about it other that it seemed interesting before I bought it. A nice surprise, nice and heavy piece of rock (death rock apparently, but I'm not familiar with that term). The composition of the album is a bit weird though. The first three tracks have a rather high tempo, compared to the rest of the album. That gave me quite a bit of a weird first impression.

Lugubrum - Heilige Dwazen
I posted about Lugubrum before in this topic. It's a weird kind of black metal: bit fuzzy black metal as the basis of the music, with some unintelligible growling/gurgling vocals, weird tempo changes and saxophone. It certainly is interesting, to be honest I like the black metal parts the least.

Also the final track is really creepy

I know of one record store near my parents' house and its metal selection is like 5 records at any given time.

That, and I was never big on buying music in general. I always found the money could go to something more worth it to me, and when Youtube came around it just made it even easier to get away with not buying stuff. Nowadays, I'll occasionally buy the odd record on bandcamp or something, but most of my listening comes from youtube.

I don't think I've ever actually seen a record store. Or rather if I saw one I never remembered it.

Rather unfortunate they're dying out, but the niche will remain despite longer having a proper retail storefront.
New Blind Guardian in Jan!!!
Finally. It's been over 4 years since At the Edge of Time.

Not my first choice of European metal festivals; but I would attend that.

Though last time i saw Motley Crue, they were atrocious. Vince Neil could barely hold a note from being so out of shape. Then there was Tommy Lee's dubstep drum solo

Obsequiae - Suspended in the Brume of Eos

Okay, this is absolutely fantastic. I don't know how I never heard much tell of this album, as it may be one of the best albums I've heard in the realm of black metal that I've heard in a long, long time. You see, Obsequiae are a melodic black metal that incorporates elements of medieval and ancient music into their song structures. This is not some gimmick in which they throw some traditional instruments into the mix and call it a day. It can be heard in the lush guitar melodies and song structures. I would even dare to describe the playing on this album as "virtuosic", as it is a very impressive display of musical talent, especially for black metal. Even though it is technically black metal I guess, it is not very harsh and is brimming with vibrant textures and colors of sound, much like the tapestry used in the cover art. Let's not forget the songwriting, album was written well enough to keep me enticed for the entire 40 minutes, again, a rare feat for most black metal imo.

TLDR; you guys need to hear this shit.

Yeah this is incredible, holy shit.

I'm getting a big Dissection vibe from that.

Definitely going to check them out. Thanks man

Hey guys if the King Diamond show starts at 8pm what time do you think it will end? Trying to coordinate with the GF when to pick me up

You can never predict that with any concert that isn't televised or aired in some platform.

Even major concerts can have a tendency to run late or long on any given night.

If the show is advertised to start at 8pm, expect it to start at around 9, the opener to go on for an hour or so, Kind Diamond won't see the stage till 10:30 or 11 and you might not get out till 12 - 1am depending.

Horrendous - Ecdysis
Quite surprised how much I'm enjoying this one. At surface level, this is definitely Scandinavian style OSDM (as well with influences from some American acts), nothing new there. However familiar it may be, this album still feels fresh. Fortunately, the band does their part to innovate within their style and succeeds in rising above the caveats of playing in a retro style. What is notable about this release is that the higher level of songwriting and musicianship gives the album more depth than your average new wave of OSDM record. It's not revolutionary, but a step in the right direction. A pretty damn enjoyable record, and a respectable addition to the death metal canon.

Yea, this is fucking solid. They are doing death metal right, the riffs, the production, just perfect. Gonna buy the shit out of this now.

mindblowing Martin van Drunen worship.

Damn right, fucking awesome.
