The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Then give me a better comparison band.
Unfortunately I can't. Most of the modern metal just flies over my head :D The interlude could be labelled Opethy, or something, but the song overall definately doesn't sound anything like Opeth. Not old or new.

On a completely unrelated matter I was cleaning my old room at my parent's house and I found some old CDs I used to listen to:

I loved Naglfar's Vittra back in the days and I guess I still do, but I remember being really excited about Jens Ryden's solo project Dead Silent Slumber. If I remember correctly he plays all the instruments and does all the vocals. Surprisingly it still rocks.

Also check out Slumber's Fallout. Sadly their only output, but a brilliant album altogether. I'm really bad with genre's in general, but they're Melodic Death / Doom I guess.

so check it, I learned how to scan LP jackets. This is my first experience doing this, but I like what I got.

not sure if there has been mention of Future Tense here. Old school Dutch heavy metal of the highest order.

anyways yeah scanning LPs is very, very hard especially if the artwork is complex. I'll try to do more for vinyl exclusive releases so people can have high quality tags. Enjoy the art.

Just got back from the Sikth gig in Birmingham. Absolutely fantastic - incredibly tight as always (although something went badly wrong in Pussyfoot which was quite amusing). Great to see them, 8 years after my first viewing of them. Obviously had to buy another hoodie, just because.

On a side note, my first gig in 3 years or so - I wish I'd taken foam plugs; I get the feeling I'll still have this ringing in my ears come the morning...

I would suggest some more music oriented ear plugs like these if you go to shows often. They don't muffle things quite as badly as foam ones, but still keep your ears from getting fucked up.

Just saw Artillery and Onslaught tonight. Time for another sore neck... I wish Artillery had headlined, but Onslaught was still very good.

Bought the Artillery tour shirt too, directly from their new(ish) singer. Speaking of whom, he has some serious pipes, very skilled vocalist. It was funny seeing a dude about twenty years younger than the other members haha.

He's also insanely cute, hot damn. >_> Did not expect Rhaegar Targaryen on vocals... xD

Will be seeing them on the 23rd. Very excited since they had to cancel the tour with Gama Bomb last year, first time seeing Artillery, cannot wait

Also, not a metal release, but there's definitely some metal influences here I think some of you folks may like if you're looking to get into some other genres: https://monomer.bandcamp.com/album/labyrinth

It's chiptune-laden 80's-esque electronica, but there's a lot of progressive and hair metal influences here, if that's your sorta thing. Found it in rec'd in the chiptune thread, and I'm really digging it.

Damn, this is really cool. I've been wanting to find something like this for awhile, most of Perturbator movement type stuff doesn't quite get there.

edit: This thread needs more action. The one guy who posts to himself in the Christianity thread is on the first page more often.

somehow i've managed to avoid listening to anything devin townsend has ever done. throwing on alien now, where do i go from here?

If you like Alien, be sure to check out City. That album still floors me with its insanity. It's far more intense than Alien.

As for his solo work, I'm not one of those Devin Townsend followers so I haven't heard everything he's done. That said, Ocean Machine is a great album, very melodic and it certainly has made me more interested in his work. Try those two next.

Yeah, I really like Alien. Devin's music is crazy in a good way and Hoglan's drumming keeps it all tied together and coherent.

I'm not sure this comparison makes sense in the slightest, but this is always what I wanted from Revocation - a prog/technical/whatever mishmash of influences that keeps everything moving and interesting - the difference obviously being that Revocation would sound more thrash-derived and not really do much of Devin's polyrhythm Meshuggah-ish stuff. Dave Davidson (while an amazing soloist) doesn't have Townsend's songwriting chops.

Alien is one of the most intense extreme metal albums ever made. City is like a Dave Mathews Band album compared to Alien...

Devin is pretty much all great. It's no use even recommending any over the others, they all have their place.

edit: finally got around to putting in Z2- so far this is pretty weak compared to Ziltoid (4 songs in). Like a pale imitation.

Z2 is actually kind of bad. I would never have guessed that would be the case. The first one must have been a perfect storm for him to make that work the way it did, because he had no clue how to do it again. First off there is next to nothing actually heavy on it- Ziltoid was full of great heavy shit. The first half of the album is like a decent Epicloud album, which is what we got with the other disc already (and it's better than Z2... how could something he wasn't even passionate about better than Z2?). Second, waaaay too much script. It's almost nonstop. Captain Spectacular, Ziltoid, Captain Spectacular, Ziltoid, Planet Smasher, over and over again.

There is not one track on Z2 that holds up to anything on Ziltoid. Not even close.

Z2 is the first miss by Devin in a long time, and Epicloud came kind of close. Casualties was solid, but it didn't hit the highs of Ki or Ghost for me. Is this the beginning of a downturn?

could be statistical noise. Seems like the man makes tons of stuff.

Hey guys I don't like a thing either *waits for a hi-5 for a billion years*

Dark Matter is good for one listen through. Then if you're still listening to it instead of the third disk, then you're doing it wrong.

Killer stuff. What is your method for scanning LPs?
I'm a fan of Cadaver, but never knew about that goofy comp.

Just got my order from Dark Descent Records on some killer stuff, some mentioned in this thread. Great label to buy from. Reasonably priced and fast shipping.

go listen to like, portal/pyrrhon/mitochondrion/dodecahedron for funsies

That has nothing to do with what I'm referring to. Manic Devin is completely off the deep end... stuff like Dodecahedron and the bands you listed don't engage on that level. It's dark and heavy, sure. That's a dime a dozen these days.

More words of wisdom from the Metal God. Because anytime Halford talks, I listen.

http://metalhammer.teamrock.com/news/2014-11-10/halford-metal-is-a-force-for-good

In a recent interview, Halford stated that prayer 'absolutely works'.

I fucking love Dark Matters. While the original Ziltoid was a good album, Dark Matters more deftly combines the narrative with the music, making it feel more cinematic, coherent, and effective. It's a ton of fun.

Sky Blue is pretty much a standard Devin Townsend album, but it's well done for the most part. No complaints.

Well, almost always, anyway :)

Yeah, I was just being a bit hyperbolic. Still, Halford is always worth listening to even if I don't agree with his beliefs. At least he's not making himself look like a hypocritical bigot like other Metal Christians *cough* Dave Mustaine *cough*.

manic devin also has gene hoglan's drumming keeping his music perfectly accessible by most metalheads and doesn't really have a lot of the uncomfortable note progressions or wall of sound i associate with intensity.
