The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Feel free to scold me for not being a proper metal-head :P

Ohhh can I? :D

Sgjackson's suggestions are solid. Here are some more:

- Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
- Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
- Iron Maiden - first seven full-lengths (seriously, they're all better than BNW)
- Kreator - Coma of Souls
- Testament - The Legacy
- Artillery - By Inheritance
- Anacrusis - Screams and Whispers

Been going back to the heavy hitters from my school days in the late '80s, when I wore a Boston Bruins baseball cap in junior high and had a mullet.

My top 5 cassettes of the era:

1. King Diamond 'Them' - Genius. I wore a few of these out.

2. Sepultura 'Arise' - I saw the video for Dead Embryonic Cells on Headbangers Ball and I knew right then I'd still be listening to it when I was almost 40.

3. Metallica 'Justice': Visionary and heady, it elevated everything.

4. King Diamond 'Conspiracy' - almost as good as Them. King has some creepy moments on this album. Them and Conspiracy are amazing.

5. Overkill 'Years of Decay' - Time to Kill took the badass middle riff to another level.

what a heart warming post!

So, my first post here, and I'm looking for a band/album recommendation as I haven't really gotten into any new music in a few years. I'm not particularly into anything heavy, more toeing the line between hard rock and metal
You might like the following albums. Links are to songs on Youtube.
Black Tide - Light from Above
Rise to Remain - City of Vultures
Arch Enemy - War Eternal (This album is fucking brilliant)
Glamour of the Kill - Savages
Trivium - In Waves
Unearth - The March

this is exactly where you go if you're like "man this shit is cool LET'S GO BACK IN TIME"

Banjo and black metal go together great. I know the new Panopticon has been mentioned in this thread a few times, but I really think it might be my favorite album so far this year. And that is saying a lot considering the onslaught of amazing stuff that has been released this year.

wait the new panopticon has banjo also? i knew kentucky did that but that made sense given the album's concept.

Final guest line up for Ted Kirkpatrick's (Tourniquet) new solo project, Onward to Freedom, that comes out in a few days, and boy is it a line-up with a few...odd choices:

Wow, the guy who played Carl from Up. Some of these are interesting too. I'm surprised to see Stryper still playing and kicking. I can always go for Marty and Chris in an record. Hope Marty utilizes some novel scales in his solos.

So they other day I posted about this being teased, but it just got announced today. Not metal band, but an industrial electronic project being done by some metal musicians Ryan Clark (Demon Hunter, Training for Utopia) and Randy Torres (ex-Project 86) called Nyves is being launched on KickStarter for their first album, Anxiety. Very NIN and Depeche Mode influenced and I think Ryan (who's always been a strong vocalist) really fits in the sample track they posted. Artwork/design looks really sharp too. It'll probably be an interesting project to keep my eyes on.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1722713765/nyves

Periphery announce two "Juggernaut" studio albums. The whole double album thing doesn't really do a lot for me, I'm just excited to hear new Periphery. It's like my prog-metal comfort food, if that's possible. Also grabbed tickets to see them at the end of January with Wovenwar (ex-As I Lay Dying.)

Hmm, I'm a big fan of Ryan Clark and his endeavors, but not a big fan of Kickstarting music projects. Hope it works out for them though, sounds very interesting.

Wow that was fast. It seems like Clear just came out. Yeah I'm skeptical of a double-album too - I hope they don't get all overly serious.

I like Periphery, I'll be looking forward to this one. I'm more a fan of the music than the vocals, though. Nothing wrong with the vocals, just not really my style.

Yeah, I think their strength comes from having such a strong songwriting lineup. Misha, Mark, Jake and Nolly are all very talented in their own ways.

as long as they have someone other than Spencer writing the lyrics.

Maaaybe? I would think that's all him now but it seems like he's started up quite a few projects outside of Periphery lately so who knows.

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had any band suggestions for me. I'm looking for some really nice metal with vocals that sound very "girl-like" to an almost screeching halt. there is some emo punk bands that do it, but I was wondering if someone knew some really nice metal that had this.

Example, of what I mean but this is more like rock songs (I guess?) : Circa Survive - Fever Dreams ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBQ-LgJj9Vw ), coheed and cambria - welcome home ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0H3RlaQVrM ),

I sounds like a hard rock/pop mass transfusion in my ears and i like that because my ears are not ready for the growling.^^

I'm sure some peeps with a much wider knowledge of metal than me will pop in here to help you out, but Tesseract's newest album comes to mind for me.

Also, more post-hardcore than metal, but if you haven't heard Chiodos, I think they'd be right up your alley.

Ling Tosite Sigure from Japan does the Circa/Coheed girly vocals thing:

Abnormalize (Psycho-Pass song)

Tesseract has a new singer now, or rather, they got their old singer Daniel Tompkins back.

In fact, anything by Daniel Tompkins might be up your alley:

Skyharbor (w/Marty Friedman solo)

White Moth Black Butterfly (non-metal)

Also, Chino from Deftones is very emo in his delivery:

Chino's side projects are also worth checking out.

Thank you guys! This is great stuff! When I have tried getting pointers from metal fans in the past I felt a very hostile attitude! Metalheads don't fuck around haha!:D

Yes....new Blind Guardian will be intriguing....

Hope it ends up all well.

Yeah, I think their strength comes from having such a strong songwriting lineup. Misha, Mark, Jake and Nolly are all very talented in their own ways.

Matt Halpern is the most impressive member for me. Dude's an amazing drummer.

I've been on a pretty big DSBM kick lately. It's perfect to walk my dog with.

Dog walking has never been more depressing, it seems.

Ha, well I walk him through parks and other nature-y places and its perfect for that late fall atmosphere when the skies are cloudy, air is chilly, and leaves are falling.

Sometimes I get a bit envious of people who are able to experience Fall. Arizona has none of that type of weather (at least where I am). I wonder what I'm something with my Metal listening due to that.

I guess Arizona is great if you enjoy Stoner Metal, though.

Unintentionally, I've seen them live twice. They're alright ... definitely a surprisingly good opener. I don't really get the Opeth comparison, though.

I haven't heard them past that one song. It was sent to me this morning and, while it's good, it's not extreme enough to be in my spectrum continually. That song itself is a bit like older Opeth to me but, I'm not the biggest Opeth fan (haven't cared for much except Blackwater Park) so I'm sure most will disagree. It's the only thing in my memory bank I could link it to though.

Someone else could probably put a better tag on it, sans FACE who will just tag it shit. Either way, don't let my memory lapse stop you from checking it out.

Then give me a better comparison band.

No kidding? That didn't take long. I thought Ashe did a pretty great job on that new album but I certainly don't mind them getting Daniel back.

Yeah, Halpern is the shit. He also founded that Bandhappy company, which is pretty cool.

... did someone hack FACE's account?

Anyway, best part about a new BG album is a new BG tour. :D

lol, thought the same thing.

Haven't been impressed by BG since Nightfall in Middle-Earth myself.

I like things...

...occasionally.

The version of NIME without the silly interludes that came with that big collection is way better than the OG version, hooray for not having to skip a song every 4 mins.

Wait, there was a version of Nightfall in Middle Earth without all those stupid folk interludes?

That's how I felt about Pestilence - Spheres as well. Every other song is a fucking interlude of stupid shit.

11 tracks not split bitmeal across the seas? Color me surprised.
I find it mildly weird they're titling one of the tracks off the previous album. The track might either be a follow-up to Wheel of Time in honor of the series ending.

"The Ninth Wave" sounds remarkably stupid though.

Found this the other day as I was trawling through bandcamp artist recommendations. It's some seriously heavy fucking sludge: https://colliderslays.bandcamp.com/

Really great sound. Wish they had more stuff, honestly.

Also, not a metal release, but there's definitely some metal influences here I think some of you folks may like if you're looking to get into some other genres: https://monomer.bandcamp.com/album/labyrinth

It's chiptune-laden 80's-esque electronica, but there's a lot of progressive and hair metal influences here, if that's your sorta thing. Found it in rec'd in the chiptune thread, and I'm really digging it.
