The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Brofist! The first Evil Dead is my all-time favorite film. I watch it religiously once a year.

My personal favorite is the second movie, though the first three are all excellent.

I can't tell if Master of Reality or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is the best Sabbath album.

Master of Reality is my favorite.....maybe. I'm torn between their debut, Paranoid, or Reality. All three albums are equally amazing, it's just a matter of my preferences.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath for sure. Favorite track...brace yourselves...Fluff!

It's warm and sunny outside, but I've been in Blashyrkh since yesterday getting throned by blackstorms! Good times. Thanks to kottila for the reminder with the Abbath sheep.

I"m starting to think that Black Metal sounds better in the Winter months. Seriously, it always has a better effect on me during those times, than it does during the spring and summer.

Iron Reagan are playing a show here tonight. I'm considering going. Anyone seen them before?
Haven't seen them, but what I can say is that their debut is like a million times better than anything Municipal Waste have produced since The Art of Partying. If they put on only half the live show that MW do, you're in for a treat.

I'm studying right now, and have the Esoteric discography blasting. An old favourite for situations like this.

I ended up going and having a good time. Except for the fact that some doucher from the opening bands started throwing punches at the lead singer which then escalated to an all out brawl after the show outside of the venue.

I don't think we will be getting Iron Reagan back in this town any time soon.

No problem! Great albums generally have a way of finding you, so you wouldn't have been deprived for too long :) Glad you're enjoying it. It's all I've been listening to for the last week. Like you said, they're ridiculously consistent and then some, which is all the more amazing when you consider how unique and mature their sound is. I just can't see them putting out a less than stellar album.

Henrik is such a rad vocalist. I like Jacob, but Henrik and AG are beyond a perfect match. And the new members are great, too; especially the drummer. He isn't afraid to sprinkle ghost notes and general dynamics here and there, which the ex-drummer didn't do at all. Adds a lot to that thick blanket of sound they're so good at conjuring up.

Bummer about BG. I went a bit dark on them after ANATO. Are they very much in the same vein as the follow-up to ANATO? I feel as if they've dumbed down their sound a bit. Kinda like Vanden Plas with their latest :(
Anubis Gate has this incredibly veteran sound to them, particularly on their last two albums. I think Henrik really helps with that... he just owns the melodies and the intricacies of weaving his vocals throughout the songs. It also helps that they've gotten away from some of the cheesier concept album stuff they've done in the past.

I didn't even know they HAD other new members, but the drumming in particular has stuck out to me as well on this new record. The little offshoot beats he regularly throws in makes an already packed sound even denser. This is definitely an album that will take at least a dozen listens to fully understand and appreciate.

As for Blind Guardian... A Night At The Opera has a lot of great interweaving components and underlying melodies throughout the album, but it's mixed so poorly that it is near impossible to fully pick apart everything they created on that record. If you're not a fan of ANATO, their follow up A Twist In The Myth likely wouldn't be for you either, as it is very much in the same vein as ANATO. However, their most recent one (which came out all the way back in 2010 now) is absolutely fantastic. The sound is still "overproduced" by kvlt standards, but it's done so in an intentional, professional way. Hansi is a supreme perfectionist when it comes to Blind Guardian's music, which is part of why it takes so long for an album to come out; he meticulously attends to every note and sound on the album and arranges them in a way that produces the best effect. The band clearly took the criticisms of ANATO and ATITM to heart when mixing At The Edge of Time.

Just as a couple of examples... the first track on the album features a seventy piece orchestra interwoven with some unstoppably glorious melodies, while the very next track harkens back to their heavier speed style of yore. It's an incredibly diverse album.

I've never even heard of Vanden Plas, so I can't comment on the comparison with that one :P

Carnage - Dark Recollections getting re-issued on vinyl with FULL DYNAMIC RANGE (TM) by Earache. Pre-orders open May 2nd.

I got that email this morning. I've got the original LP and cassette and cd re-issue. I think there's no way to salvage the thin production. Imagine if it had the in your face sound like Left Hand Path did, ughhh

One of the better current death metal bands.

Also worth looking out for in may, Finnish death/doomers Vainaja will release their debut album on may 23rd. The preview track Valon Lapset sounds promising and apparently one of the members played in Mordicus.

I really don't know about calling Dark Recollections anything like thin or tinny-sounding lol. What it perhaps does lack is some clarity in the mix compared to Left Hand Path for example, but the meat is all there.

Yeah, I don't see how it's thin either. The biggest issue is the drum sound and that's a problem with nearly all sunlight recordings thanks to the electronic drum kit they used.

Oops! I should have been more clear. By "after ANATO", I meant everything post ANATO. I love ANATO. I know a lot of people don't like the direction BG took with that album, but I'm not one of them. You're definitely right about the mixing/production; it's very average. Of what I've heard of ATITM, it just sounds simpler, less memorable and less inspired to me, especially when compared to stuff like And Then There Was Silence; more generic chord progressions and whatnot. That being said, I'm not very familiar with it, so I'll have to give your suggestions a re-listen.

And DUDE. No Plas?! All this talk of mature and unique sound... Haha. Just like AG, they're a progressive metal beacon in my books, albeit with quite a few more years on them. Amazing at their best. I really can't see you not jiving with them. Have a squiz:

I was thoroughly unimpressed by the title track :/ May try listening again some time in the future.

New Slayer wasn't anything great either, blah. Not unexpected though.

Hey guys,

How about some new Judas Priest to start your week?

http://judaspriest.com/Redeemer-of-souls/

Definitely a throwback song. It sounds very Stained Class/British Steel. They also brought back the tubular super chorus guitar effect they used to use in the 80s.

Fuck Vivian Campbell! He's an asshole and a sell out. It must suck to have been in Dio and then play sloppy seconds in shitty hair bands for the rest your career.

Craig Goldy from Giuffria was shitty replacement, no wonder Dio was so pissed. Vivian's playing actually nosedived after he joined Def Lep. It's a shame cuz he was unbelievable in Dio and he was really young.

It surprises me that Vivian Campbell doesn't come up in more discussions of sell outs. Most bands get accused of it for changing their sound to be more accessible ... he jumped onto an already more accessible band for the sake of making more money.

Anyway, I saw Behemoth last night. Good show. Inquisition had to cancel (I'm guessing border crossing issues), but the rest of the openers were good (Black Crown Initiate, 1349 and Goatwhore). I've really never been able to get into Goatwhore much, but they were certainly entertaining.

and chicks. Not many girls went to see Dio.

You can sorta say the same thing about Jason Becker when he went to join David Lee Roth :/

Except Becker wasn't an asshole.

Went and listened to some old school In Flames yesterday. Got me thinking.

I haven't really gotten into any 'new' metal bands recently. I haven't heard anything for years that excites me. I keep finding myself listening to Maiden, In Flames, Nevermore, Arch Enemy, early Children of Bodom etc, among others.

New bands just don't seem to do it for me. I like melody, I don't mind the odd catchy chorus or guitar solo here or there but I just haven't found a band that has a bit of variety, technicality, brutality etc.

Anyone got any recommendations. I'm beginning to feel quite burnt out. With very few exceptions, I don't really like American or Canadian Metal.

Cacophony was the shit. DLR was the ultimate sellout band - I remember they made Greg Bissonette put on a wig cuz he wasn't metal enough, since he was really a jazz drummer.

Awww yiss. I love ANATO as well. It was my very first metal album ever (and the ONLY metal album I owned for a good six months, so I listened to it almost every single day during that time frame). Battlefield is the song that got me into metal. And Then There Was Silence is a goddam masterpiece. Under The Ice is badass as hell. Punishment Divine has some of the best lyrics in any Blind Guardian song.

STILL, I try to restrain my inner fanboy when it comes to the band and still examine them with a critical eye, and I can definitely understand why some people have problems with the album.

I really liked A Twist In The Myth too, as it DOES have some really good tracks on it, but again, if you haven't listened to At The Edge of Time you are missing out on some great stuff. Also of note... they re-recorded And Then There Was Silence with a live orchestra, and it's so much better than the (already superb) original. They re-recorded The Bard's Song (both versions) and Valhalla as well. Good stuff.

(*as a side note, "Have a squiz" is my new favorite phrase)

The first song you linked didn't quite click with me, but I'm now on my third listen of Inside of Your Head (meaning when I go back and relisten to End Of All Days I'm sure I'll like it more). What album should I start with here? The new Anubis Gate has gotten me onto another delightful prog kick and this band seems like one that is a critical gap in my metal catalogue.

IN OTHER NEWS... I am moving to Chicago next week! I am SO goddam excited for it, and one of the primary reasons is because I'll be able to see so many more metal acts. HammerOfThor, I know you hail from the Chicago area... do you (or anyone else) happen to know of a good catch-all site that lists all the upcoming metal shows in the city?

I know Agalloch is playing there over the summer, as is Slough Feg (with High Spirits no less!)

The ONLY times I've gone to Chicago the past half decade were for metal shows, but my car gets such horrible gas mileage that just driving there and back costs around $100 in gas money. But now? I'm not going to skip out on a single show I'm interested in. So hype.

I couldn't agree more. There are no words to describe how much I hate Def Leppard Pyromania onward. Such a shitty band. Pour Some Sugar On Me is absolutely heinous.

It would be one thing if Vivian Campbell actually changed the sound of Def Lep, but he didn't do jack shit. He just wanted to be pretty.

He was actually a pretty gifted guitarist, at least one with a promising career. Just listen to the way he played on Holy Diver. He unleashed some amazing riffs and solos.

Such a shame.

I just use Songkick and let that track shows for me. Reggies is really the only venue that regularly plays metal. Cobra Lounge and a few others are good metal venues but they don't have the same frequency of shows as Reggies.

The next show I'm definitely going to is Pig Destroyer in a few weeks at Reggies. I live on the South Side not to far away from the venue. PM me if you're planning on going.

Oh yeah, I worshiped the dude's playing during his Dio days. He had like a young Gary Moore thing going on, but yeah Def Leppard. *sigh*

Did he play on anything else halfway decent?

He had a stint with Whitesnake after John Sykes left but I think he only recorded one song with them. He was supposed to be some kind of teenage protege when he had a band called Sweet Savage, but the band was kind of crappy.

The dude was the pick/pinch harmonic king before Zakk Wylde took over that mantle.

That's too bad. Oh well, at least his work with Dio still exists.

Welp, looks like the good Queensryche will be the only one

Welcome to Chicago! Honestly I just keep up with bands I know/venues I know. I just check their sites regularly for shows. Songkick is good and will send you email alerts when bands are in your area. Or maybe I'm think of Band In Town? Well check out Bands In Town and Songkick, both are good ways to see who is in town.

Original QUEENSRŸCHE lead singer Geoff Tate will continue to record, perform and pursue a variety of other creative endeavors and, as part of the agreement, will have the exclusive rights to perform 'Operation: Mindcrime I' and 'II' in their entirety as a unique performance.

lol. This is like the Pink Floyd-Roger Waters deal for The Wall rights.
