The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

I think it's an EP actually. Nevertheless, I can't wait.
Yeah I didn't realize. Honestly i'tll probably be the length of any other band's full length anyways lol.

I really like Colored Sands but it's so dense that I have a hard time getting through it all in one sitting

So what your saying is this double album should be a single album with a bonus disc of songs that didn't make the cut?

Not necessarily. The songs I listed are just the ones (I feel) that can get you inspired to listen to the others for the complete picture. Once you grow to love the base of songs you can transition into liking the others.

Don't really care about the live show. Unless there's something really rad I don't know about... I mean I doubt the live show is like as good as Roger Waters 2015, which I just watched the other day.

I'm thinking more on the line of a theatrical musical rather than a live DT concert. In a Rolling Stone Article JP did mention plans for eventually making Astonishing a Broadway show.

"Next year might be too soon, but I'll tell you, in coming up with this plan, we have thought about all of the possibilities. The Who did it with Tommy and Green Day with American Idiot, so it's not out of the question. It's something that would be fantastic — I would love it to happen. All of the elements and ingredients are in place. Hey, it could be the next Disney movie musical [laughs]! Everything is geared up, and the sky's the limit."

Totally. I love the album, but after my initial obsession with it, I usually listen to one of the halves in a sitting. I think this EP will provide me with enough music to give me a satisfying Gorguts listening session.

And I think we found the reason the album sucks so much. They're way too obsessed with what is seriously not that great of a story. If it was backed with great music, sure it'd be alright. It's not the worst thing in the world, but they're getting high off their own farts here. They are way too into the story and the music suffered.

The music in this album is much more theatrical though. That's why Astonishing can be transitioned to a musical show. As you listen through it, you can see how the various musical themes and tracks can fit right into a show. You couldn't do that with something like Scenes from a Memory because it's still primarily traditional Prog Metal. So I'd still argue the music is great in a theatrical sense. Coupled with a story that's well enough, and yes you have a good theatrical event. Lets not lose sight of the band's namesake Dream THEATER.

Riverside's Facebook page just put this up relating to Piotr's tragic passing. Posting the last paragraph from it. I'm completely crushed. I've had a history with said band, and I've seen some tough times, but Riverside would always be there to help me through. Gutted. Absolutely gutted.

It must be a joke, a grim twist from the damned "Game of Thrones", which we were reading avidly at the same time, checking furtively how many pages the other one had got left to read. A terrible blow as if a baby learning to make its first steps was swept away by that big wrecking ball. And all that's left is a huge black empty hole with remnants of dead flesh around. I feel as if half of my heart was ripped out of my chest, as if half of my soul was taken away from me. I keep crying and I can't get a grip. I feel an immense sea of sadness and pain inside me. Yes, sometimes, to balance things out, I get a glimpse of black humour. Sometimes, I'm simply pissed off. But the truth is, I miss you, Piotr, and I don't know how to cope with it. A lot has ended when you died, a lot has faded, vanished, fallen to pieces. I am simply devastated. I feel as if tides were crashing me against rocks and with every wave it's getting worse. I don't know when the pain will pass but it looks like for now it has to be a part of me. Just like you have been a part of my life.

Farewell my beloved Friend. See you somewhere on the other side.

Well, Ozzy wasn't half-bad for a dude with a cold (or so he said). Even if he does use a teleprompter. Still had chills during Black Sabbath (opening song), and Children of the Grave.

Wish they had played Symptom of the Universe or Electric Funeral. Or Sweet Leaf even. Still a good setlist, mind, but I wonder how Iommi feels about his apparent "final tour", after 45 years of career in Black Sabbath, where every single song except one (Dirty Women from... Technical Ecstasy, lol -- apparently an Iommi favourite?) are from the first 2 years of Sabbath (first 4 albums).

Even I was a bit shocked to hear nothing from Sabotage or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, to be honest. That said I was pleasantly surprised to hear Hand of Doom, as I wasn't expecting it to be part of the setlist.

Here is the full list, for those who cares:

Oh and with all due respect to Bill Ward, that replacement drummer was solid, and probably did perform better than Ward would have... <_<

I feel the same way. These guys have done more for me than they could ever imagine. First time I heard them was in 2007 opening for Dream Theater here in Portugal, they stole the goddamn show, I couldn't believe it. Too good to be an opening band. I really hope they take their time but come back with more great music, Piotr had an incredible sound (when the first song of their first album gives you such a good taste of his guitar work, you know you're in for a ride - one of the best debut albums in Prog?) but Riverside is too good to end... though reading those words (full statement) by Duda doesn't really give me too much hope. Fucking hell... I'm still shocked. I'm too used to looking forward to another Riverside album and knowing the guys would deliver.

Good to know someone around here knows how I feel about this.

just nabbed tickets for the black dahlia murder (performing unhallowed), fallujah, and disentomb at the beat kitchen in May. they're doing a US tour over the next few months.

pretty stoked for it too. I've never seen fallujah and the only time I saw black dahlia was on unhallowed with every time I die, scarlet, and as I lay dying in 2004 at the fireside bowling alley.

Looks and sounds like Dillinger Escape Plan

Yeah, obviously a big influence. Genuinely though, live, they make DEP seem calm and subdued.

They start their gigs by bringing the mic stands and some road cases into the crowd and play the show down there. They were dragging tables about the place, leaping from one thing to the other and using peoples shoulders as stepping stones if need be. The guitarist played a full song rocking out on the bar.

At the end, they brought the floor toms into the crowd, gave the sticks to some kid, told him when to hit while the drummer gave a guitar to a kid, taught him the chords there and then then put him on his shoulders as he ran about the room. It was fucking beautiful carnage from start to finish.

Candlemass \m/
I've seen two awesome gigs with them.

The first one was on the day Chuck Schuldiner died, December 13th 2001. It was the first reunion gig with Messiah. Loads of famous metal musicians were there, like Mike Amott, Entombed and Dismember.
I managed to catch a special t-shirt they trew out into the crowd from the stage. Only 25 made.

The second one was in 2002 at Klubben in Stockholm. The gig was recorded for the radio. The venue was so hot that sweat was running down the walls. It's actually released on an official live album called Doomed for live. I can hear myself singing in one of the tracks. At The Gallows End - 0:10-0:17, that is me being retarded and singing the melody of the song.

I've also seen them a third time but have no special memories from that gig except speaking to Messiah afterwards, and drinking beer with Amon Amarths drummer Fredrik.

New Anthrax drops today, For All Kings. Anyone had a chance to listen yet? It's not available yet on Google Music so I haven't yet.

I did, and from people's impressions for even over a month now, i think i'm in the vast minority. I Almost fell asleep listening to the album, felt too dragged out and heaviless.

But don't listen to me, people seem to be loving it, don't wanna be a debbie downer, just my two cents on it.

Anthrax wishes they could write songs for John Bush but he doesn't give a fuck about them so they settle for Joey

The result is something that doesn't have the hooks or riffs of their classic material, while also lacking the balls of the Bush era

Worship Music was written for Dan Nelson (Bush/Anselmo wannabe), they kicked him out and got Bush for festivals but he didn't want to commit full time, so they got Joey again. In the span of like a year. Was pathetic. Then they put out a bunch of press releases like "oh yeah we reworked the album, it sounds really old school" but they didn't do shit, they forced lame melodic parts into rasp sections and changed lyrics. There's recordings of the songs on Youtube with Nelson singing them live years before and they're a lot better than what they ended up putting out (mainly because it was how they were intended)

Anthrax used to be my favorite of the big 4 but they really squandered my interest with that BS. Then Exodus followed suit by ditching Rob Dukes and becoming a bad legacy act

I agree with you entirely. Thre is so much mess they are doing for a long time now with their singers and it's completely fine if people like this new album for what it is, just the messaging of old school that is completely BS to me.
Anthrax is still one of my top 5 thrash metal bands, but what is going on right now (or for a while depending where you are coming from with their career) is just not for me.

It's frustrating because to me, if you decide to go all in on "nostalgia" then I expect there to actually be some effort put into it. They did Among The Living a few years ago which was cool, but when regular setlists are the same shit every time it's super boring.

That's why Exodus pisses me off too because they get loser Zetro back to suck on stage, and how do they capitalize? By playing the same set they've been doing since 2009 (or before). But with new, bad songs! It's a bummer.

Megadeth's new album has been getting a lot of hype from people. I haven't been the biggest fan of them ever really, but what I heard was decent. The production seems a bit too clean for my tastes, but I'll have to give it a shot EDIT: It's ok. Songwriting is nice but the album has no edge to it

Saw Ensiferum and Metsatöll last night! Great show :)
I know some of you guys told me not to get my hopes up, but I thought the band was great and the mood was good. And holy shit Petri's voice... wow. I had an awesome time.

...

apart from that one chick next to me who just kept taking selfies and scrolling her instagram THE.ENTIRE.FUCKING.TIME.

Just what the fuck.

P.S.: A little self-promotion here, but I thought some of the photos I took were pretty damn awesome (I do this professionally). I did my best to capture the mood of the show, see them here. :P

Please let me know if this shit isn't allowed

So, gave Dream Theater's latest album, "The Astonishing" a listen, and my impressions aren't positive...

Dream-Theater.jpg

Their 2013 self-titled was really dissapointing in my opinion, which left post-portnoy DT at a 50/50 split in terms of material I've liked! "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" was a pretty good album, but this album feels waaaay too bloated and full of samey sounding filler to really enjoy as a whole, shame as it starts off strong with the first of the album's instrumentals, "Dystopian Overture" and the album's first proper song, "The Gift Of Music" which are both fantastic, and it felt like the gang had gotten out of their recent rut, but then comes song after song of slow paced piano driven ballads that monologue and try to push the bland story along, with brief teasing glimpses of that complex instrumentation and lyricism that I love DT for strewn sparingly throughout. Whilst I understand it's a concept album these guys have done it way better in the past.

"Metropolis Pt2: Scenes From A Memory" was a much better concept album and that only clocked in at about 12 tracks! That album was tightly packed together and knew how to space out everything, it had slow quiet moments, ferociously fast instrumentals, and each track sounded unique and refreshing when listening to the entire thing in one sitting. It also told it's story in a much less overblown and more intriguing fashion than this over-engorged mess.

A huge portion of this album just feels too samey, and that's a shame as tracks like "Lord Nafaryus", "A New Beginning", "Moment Of Betrayal", "The Path That Divides", "Our New World" and the aforementioned "Dystopian Overture" and "The Gift of Music" show that if this album was significantly shorter, veered away from it's concept album origins, and shed a ton of it's bloat then it could've actually been a solid album. A crying shame. This, along with Ayreon's "The Theory of Everything" are prime examples of albums that try to do way too much instead of focusing on a tighter, more focused album.

It wouldn't be dream theatre without 10 extra layers of bloat.

Just like it wouldn't be Luca Turilli without 10 additional tracks of orchestration.

Koriandrr, nice pics :)

There was a couple standing near me on Ghost concert in Vienna. And they just stood there and filming a WHOLE concert. From the start to the end and both just stood there, transfixed to that phone recording the show.

Speaking of spamming, I've got a gig at least once a week for the next month. Life is exciting. Still looking forward the most to Ghost next Tuesday in London. They said it'll be an extra special show, so I'm suuuuuper hyped. :D

Thank you! Glad you like them.
Man.... this really sucks :( I know the venue Ghost are performing at next week is pretty tight about cameras though and they've been introducing some new rules even for photographers, so .... I'd like to see if that'll make a difference.
