The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

AC/DC is finished. First, Malcolm leaves, Rudd thrown out, and now Brian Johnson is facing total hearing loss.

Time to retire.

Yeah, pretty sad. When the Malcom thing happened, I thought that was bad news and pretty much made me think that I wouldn't bother trying to see them again. And then Phil went nuts and then I saw the prices they were asking and I said, to hell with that, I'm definitely out. And now no Brian and they are going to try and sell people on a replacement? I'd want my money back ASAP.

First time here, I think (I drink a lot)

Been listening to a shitload of metal lately though. Got into Gojira late last year, found out about Avantasia and Eluvetie (whose name I can't bother to look up the proper spelling for (folk metal for you huh?)) this year, finally got around to checking out Lamb of God, and right now am jammin' to Equilibrium.

Oh, and I was at one of those Nightwish concerts last week!

But mostly here to share the new All Hail the Yeti tune

Before the Flames

Being honest, I usually avoid big metal threads like these because my tastes tend to hit more mainstream routes which don't always win me favors D: Hoping to scroll through and find some new bands I've never heard of though. THus far 2015 was a good year for that, and 2016 is already starting off damn well.

Anyone check out Soften the Glare, Ryan Martinie (bassist from Mudvayne)'s new jazz funk band?

Video for Controlled Chaos

That's pretty cool.

One thing for me that always made Mudvayne stand out from the so-called nu-metal crowd was the excellent musicianship.

also Fredrik Andersson (amon amarth drummer who left recently) is drumming for this ending

and new song

torrent of souls

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=653SpTDe3a8

this was his old band before amon amarth

The old band was actually called A Canorous Quintet, but you're right, it's mostly the same members.
I much prefer the A Canorous Quintet albums to what This Ending has put out, despite the production being quite bad for Sunlight studios recordings.

a full track has been released for preview of the upcoming and long-awaited fourth Mithras LP entitled "On Strange Loops". Sounding great.

listen
Whoa, I kinda assumed they weren't even together anymore. Awesome.

I am glad to see Withered is getting some press, that band is really great. Colin did write and record the bass parts. Not a permanent member, but cool none the less.

Also, Sabaton and Alestorm tomorrow night. Time to get shitfaced. I never say this, but for this particular special occasion, I will.
Have fun, man. Both of those bands put on great performances. I'd dare say Sabaton is one of the best bands I've ever seen live, and I've seen a lot.

I've gotten into Nightwish Imaginaerum lately. Never been a Nightwish fan before but Scaretale is great in particular. Sounds just like Haunted Mansion from Disneyland in the middle. I Want My Tears Back rocks pretty hard too.

Julie Christmas is working with them!? Holy fuck. I'm so glad she hasn't dropped off of the face of the planet. <3

Whoa wait what hold on back up

Who is she working with?! Cause even if I hate them I'm fucking buying whatever album she's on.

She dropped off the face of the planet only to pop on Spylacopa's "Parallels" before disappearing again so I wasn't sure what she was up to next.

This is super important to my continued existence.

So I go to preorder the new Perturbator album and scroll down their artist list to find that Negura Bunget - Om was pressed again. SNATCHED.

One of my favorite black metal albums ever. So so good.

edit: perhaps not pressed again, but I don't remember seeing this version when it came out.

Moonsorrow is one of those bands that stands apart. Going back and listening to Tulimyrsky, I can't help but think why there aren't more bands out there on this level. I get into all kinds of metal and listen to pretty much anything and everything and enjoy the hell out of most of it, but it's not even close. Moonsorrow is one of a handful of bands who has mastery of every element of their sound. Even live, there's just something more impressive about what they're doing.

New Cult of Luna album, out next month!

I really hope she's going to have a more full time project soon. Everything she's touched has been golden. I still mourn the fact that Battle of Mice were only together for a couple of years.

I used to love Moonsorrow but lost interest a while ago. Verisäkeet is the last thing they did that I enjoyed, though I guess the Tulimyrsky EP was OK. But still even those pale compared to the first three full-lengths. They just got so meandering and dull... :(

The first 3 albums are undeniable, for sure. I love both eras, but Verisakeet, V:Havitetty, Tulimyrsky and VKKM are more rewarding, not to take anything away from the greatness of earlier monsters like Unohduksen Lapsi, which still has my favorite all time Moonsorrow part (maybe even the coolest thing I've ever heard in all my years listening to metal):

Chills.

Second time around is disgusting too. These kinds of parts are so rare.

Oh sure, it's all fun and games until I mention Five Finger Death Punch and any metalcore band though :P

I remember giving this band a try not too long ago and not being really gripped, but I like this. Will have to check out the new album when it's released.

I've gotten into Nightwish Imaginaerum lately. Never been a Nightwish fan before but Scaretale is great in particular. Sounds just like Haunted Mansion from Disneyland in the middle. I Want My Tears Back rocks pretty hard too.

Probably one of my top-five albums. It's so damn good, though I'm a sucker for concept albums that give me a story. There's so much magic in Imaginaerum though. Just wonderful.

I definitely find Kivenkantaja and Voimasta to be their best albums, but I love their newer stuff too. They are definitely at their best when they get jaunty.

Also, Sabaton and Alestorm tomorrow night. Time to get shitfaced. I never say this, but for this particular special occasion, I will.

I'm a huge Power Metal fan, and Sabaton are one of those bands that I don't really get the hype for. Their recorded stuff, at least. I did see them open for Nightwish and they were very good.

Alestorm are awesome. The last 2 albums have been great.

I totally get what you're saying. I don't think they're the most talented musicians out there, but I find it extremely catchy and enjoyable. They are definitely great showmen though, and put on an amazing and energetic show.

I didn't care for the Golden Age. I liked the first two albums a lot for a while, but I feel the pirate gimmick is kinda getting worn out now. There's only so many "pirate" riffs out there.

Oh man, I'm not a real fan of Cult of Luna but I'm down to pick that album up if she's a decent part of it. I have literally every project she has ever touched. Even her two solo albums.

Meanwhile I've been revisiting some of my AOTYs or top contenders of past years and can say that In Mourning "The Weight of Oceans" and Shade Empire "Omega Arcane" still hold up really well. "Colossus" might be one of my favorite opening tracks of all time, tied amusingly with "Ruins".

Boo! Hiss!
jk :)

To be honest this community here is pretty great at not doing that, been posting here for almost two years and it is nothing like what I would find in facebook metal groups or other places. Feel free to post anything or talk about the band we will not chase you out with pitch forks.

being a regular poster here we share our opinions on bands good or bad but I've yet to see any of that "Five fingered pussy punch!" or "get new ears metal noob" shit here.

I'm buying the pirate gimmick every time. It's just too much fun. Especially in a good company.

Still my favourite Moonsorrow track:
Kylän Päässä
And no, it's not because of all the umlauts xD

hehe, hell yes. Legendary.

Funny thing, when I first heard of Moonsorrow in the early '00s, I was just getting back into metal after rejecting it for around a decade, I was in shoegaze bands and focusing mostly on that kind of stuff for most of the 90s. I dove back into metal after hearing stuff like Agalloch, Opeth, Lumsk, then the floodgates opened up with folk metal. I didn't know much about any of those bands at that point, but I had this impression of Moonsorrow like they were older, kind of like elder statesmen of metal- I was that impressed. They stood above everyone else to me. I figured whoever was behind this stuff had to have been through it all, it was so... masterful (Verisakeet wasn't even out yet, I don't think). It blew my mind when I realized they were just regular guys, heh.

Another new track from Killswitch Engage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1PdUMHQAFE

This album sounds amazing.

I got the special edition album last night. I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but what I have is so fucking good. Possibly even better than Disarm the Descent.

I had been listening to Trivium's newest Silence in the Snow previously and I love it. At first, I was disappointed in the lack of screaming, but the songs are really catchy.

LP versions of Ares Kingdom's 2015 album, The Unburiable Dead, are out via Nuclear War Now! I posted when the CD came out, but this album deserves more attention.

Awesome, been waiting for the vinyl. Will grab it when Iron Bonehead get their copies...

I think I'm still the only Metal-GAF member supporting The Astonishing at the moment.

Lol I love that song. Alestorm is in no way played out. Their songs are so catchy and awesome. Pirate Powered Murder Skills!

Ok I had a new spreadsheet idea. Basically the one I did for recommendations was because I had too many bands to keep track of. Now I'm having the same problem on all the new shit I find. I keep adding new albums to my library and forgetting which got added. At least in the old disc days I could sift through a pile. Of course back in those days I was limited by my wallet where on a streaming service I can just put as much as I can find on. Anyway, long story short this is my albums of 2016 list. Whatever I find that I like is going on there. Feel free to comment on the spreadsheet (that link allows comments), copy it and make your own, or ignore it as you see fit. I certainly don't mind taking suggestions for albums to include (whether I like them or not) or allowing others to edit it. Just pm me for edit rights. This is another, I'm doing it anyway so if someone else benefits...cool.

Ares Kingdom played a killer live set on local radio KFJC recently. Will pick this up on vinyl.

OK OK, Hold your horses there now buddy. Only true fans are allowed to buy Cult of Luna albums so I guess you're outta luck :(

Darnit. Guess I'll have to listen to it on Youtube like a plebian. =(

Meanwhile I've been spinning this new Toothgrinder album. It's pretty good, very SiKth-esque. Which, in the absence of any new SiKth save the recent boss-ass EP, is fine to be a little derivative.

This video is pretty low budget and silly but it's "The House (That Fear Built)" which is the first track off Nocturnal Masquerade and a pretty good introduction to their sound.

I dunno, they're fun.

Also discovered this band on bandcamp called Gay Kiss that kinda might be more hardcore than metal but they have a very Converge-type sound with a stronger punk influence, like way early Converge. That's not to say it's just a rip-off as they throw in a lot of personal sound to it. I quite like them and the album is pay what you want so I figure that they'd be worth at least a buck to a couple people. Almost Comadre-like.

Here's the whole album. Much noise. Such punk.
