The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Has anyone in this thread been to Maryland Death Fest? When did you book your hotel? I'm heavily considering going but I probably can't make the decision until early next year and it seems like the hotels fill up fast. Also, to any one that did go, where did you stay?
Hotels usually booked when we buy tickets. Mount Vernon is decent. Envy is garbage avoid at all costs. There's a nicer one called Embassy. I don't book the hotels, my friends handle that. Dunno where we are staying this year other than it being near the venues. There's a holiday inn around there . Try to get something around the boardwalk area as it's nicer and the venues are there.

Baltimore can be rough and the fest draws a lot of attention (less so now that it's indoors) you'll usually see others from the fest but don't walk alone when it's dark out. Muggings have been an issue

Getting cockblocked so hard on this. Got notification from Spotify it was up... it isn't. Just two songs. Went to the record store for this and Opeth... no Alcest copies in yet. Fuck.

I don't understand who is to blame when this happens, if it's a Spotify issue, if it's yet another timed excluse to Apple Music. I remember new Ulver album had the same situation for over a month with only a couple of songs available.

I figure a lot of times it's probably on purpose for smaller bands. They probably know their fans will pick it up in that period of time and then they can feel free to put it up after that when they're getting essentially no sales outside of at live venues anyway.

That and probably a less connected relationship between smaller labels and spotify. I'm sure bigger labels have a pretty good pipeline to streaming sites and have their files over there weeks before release and ready to go.

I go every year. A friend I stay with usually reserves a room right after the fest ends for the next year. Any of the hotels near the venues fill up pretty fast, but if you dont mind a 10-15 min walk, there are usually rooms available. If you are considering going and need to book a room, I would look now and book at least something that you can get a full refund on if you decide not to go.

I have stayed in the Hampton Inn which was nice and the Embassy Suites which was even better. Both are about 10-15 mins of walking to the venues. They are pricy, but with 6-7 other people, it cuts the cost pretty quick.

On the first listen the new Epica sounds quite strong. It's no Quantum Enigma so far, but still very good. and TQE also took a few listens before I fully appreciated it so maybe The Holographic Principle has a bight future :D Some songs have some odd sci-fi feel and very predominat use of choirs which I don't really like (especially Universal Death Squad) but others just instantly clicked (Edge Of The Blade, Phantasmal Parade, Once Upon A Nightmare). Simone has some awesome vocal melodies on the album (and almost no operatic singing anymore if that matters to anyone). I like.

Anyone else in the U.S. pre-order the new Alcest album and receive it today?

I pre-ordered mine and have yet to receive a shipping notification for it.

I preordered the rerelease of Gojira's Terra Incognita but they added it to Spotify today and first time hearing it, I am really enjoying it.

Can't wait to see them for the first time in a couple weeks.

Saw them earlier in the week. They sounded really great and had a pretty killer show. Enjoy!

animals as leaders - the brain dance

nice lil acoustic piece. it gives me hope for this album since I haven't really enjoyed their stuff since their s/t. I did like a song on weightless too (but had more hope for koperweis awesomeness).

I love animals as leaders, their debut and weightless are awesome. The joy of motion was a miss for me. That being said, I liked this song, I trust this album will be better than their last release. Can't wait to hear the rest.

Thanks for the MDF advice. Hopefully I can make it this year.

Also... NEW FUCKING DEATHSPELL OMEGA. No audio yet but it's coming Nov 8th. Cannot wait

Whether you go with a strict schedule of bands in mind or you're just in it to chill and go with the flow you'll have a blast. The crowds are probably the best you'll experience as far as metal/punk shows go. Soundstage is a blast if you're into that stuff, stagedives everywhere. Hope you can make it.

And yeah had no idea DSO was coming but it is very much on my radar. Drought rules

Kodama is Alcest's strongest album yet.

I still think Les Voyages de l'ãme is their best album, but this one is right there with it. Some classics on this one and the lyrics are again pure poetry.

I do have a small criticism though, i think it was a little mistake to have the last two songs instrumental to close the album, Onyx was perfect at the end, incredibly atmospheric and somber, i guess the other one could have been introduced earlier.

Woof, I sorta stopped paying attention to music these past couple months as I've been barely listening to any for a variety of reasons so I went back to pick up shit I missed and good goddam have there been a lot of really good releases lately. Or at least fun to listen to ones. We got:

Mizmor - Yodh
Lesbian – Hallucinogenesis
SubRosa – For This We Fought the Battle of Ages
Myrkur – Mausoleum (this shit was haunting holy crap)
Coma Cluster Void – Mind Cemeteries
Inquisition – Bloodshed Across the Empyrean Altar Beyond the Celestial Zenith (guilty pleasure band, honestly)
Imperium Dekadenz – Dis Manibvs
Shokran – Exodus
Virvum – Illuminance
Black Hate – Through the Darkness
An Autumn For Crippled Children – Eternal (jesus christ these guys put out like an album a year)
Neurosis – Fires Within Fires (honestly, it's not a "set the world on fire" good album but it's Neurosis so a "good" Neurosis album is automatically better than most other albums)
Allegaeon – Proponent for Sentience (got a weak spot for these guys too, that Rush cover is something else)
Oathbreaker – Rheia (mmm...yeah...that's some good shit)
Knocked Loose – Laugh Tracks (weird album)
Every Time I Die - Low Teens (after all the shit Keith went through, you can really tell how it changed their sound on this album. As a result it seems more evolved and tighter, they didn't get less hard but got more...polished and pushed certain other sounds)

So...shit son. I picked up a lot of shit.

Looking forward to the new Car Bomb later this month too.

Also looking forward to the BABYMETAL anime/live action show. As someone who loves BABYMETAL I can't see it as being anything other than terrible which will be entertaining in it's own right.

For anyone that saw Alcest on their last NA tour, you may recall Emma Ruth Rundle (of Red Sparowes and Marriages) opening for them. Her new record came out on Friday and it's amazing; highly recommended if you like atmospheric, female-fronted post-rock. Also, I forgot to mention this earlier but when I saw saw Wolves in the Throne Room the other night, their incense set off the venue's fire alarm and everyone had to evacuate the building before they could continue the set. Amazingly, this is the first time such a thing has ever happened at a show I was attending. Maybe we just take this stuff more seriously in New England since Great White murdered a hundred people a few years back.

Listening to the live bonus tracks on Sorceress and holy shit Mike's growl sounds fucking awful on The Drapery Falls. It doesn't even sound like him.

Opeth always sounded bad live, honestly. Especially when it comes to playing metal.

I've always been very sympathetic to metal vocalist playing live, it isn't easy to do those growls for a long time, especially if they're headlining a show. It's not like recording an album where all the conditions are in their favor, also have to remember mikael also plays the guitar so that's another thing he has to worry about. That being said, I think mikael was great in that track, wonder when it was recorded.

Growling is tough to do, really. It's strenuous indeed. Thrash vocalists often sound great live, though.

Not true. They were pretty tight on the Blackwater Park and Damnation tour. Mikael's growls were never as bad as what is on those live Sorceress tracks. I thought it was a guest vocalist or another band member doing the growls they were so bad.

So Bathory's debut is 30 years old today....

I forgot about Lamentations. The Master's Apprentice live version is terrific. Lopez's feeling on the drums is subtle and insanely intricate.

Tell me about it. Still trying to get it down. Been a few months since I really started giving a shit, and I'm maybe halfway there but I dunno if I'm doing it right yet. It's fucking hard. Uses muscles/throat in a way that aren't supposed to be used.

My roommate in college years was a very good growler. He even had a band... until he met his current wife :P

Agreed, they took the opera of TQE and turned it up. Definitely a strong album.

Opeth plays Chicago this weekend but my ticket pre-sale and album haven't even shipped yet. They sent me codes but they didn't work. 23/7 hasn't responded to my emails. This sucks.

Edit: I checked my original order email, it looks like I get my CD when I arrive and I might have to do will-call. I'd still like to know why the codes aren't working.

I've been jamming Kryptos albums the past two days and holy shit what a killer band. First albums sounds like 80s Metallica, and then their next two just combines that with some Maiden influence and it's awesome. Their second is definitely the best if anyone wants to give a listen.
