The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Hilarious post from you. Considering how butthurt you get over "wrong" metal genres as if they're written in stone and not up for interpretation. You act like only your opinion on genres is the right one.

Most people don't give a shit if a band is symphonic blackened thrash melodic death metal instead of symphonic blackened melodic speed thrash metal.

Was going to post earlier and got sidetracked. Saw the SOAD thread and just knew that's where you must've said something.

That's gentle? I mean I hate SOAD, but they're metal from what I remember. You seem upset that someone dare label a band you despise as metal. The horror!

I can barely be bothered to keep up with whatever mess of genres people come up with. "the metal thread". That encompasses a hell of a lot.

The new Aether Realm album rules. Fuck if I care to call it anything other than heavy metal.
System of a down got me into music. They aren't metal. And winking and saying they aren't metal shouldn't be taken as an insult or some sort of slight, he's just being honest.

Genre is fluid and subjective. There is no hard line on anything and arguing about it is completely pointless. Treating metal like this exclusive club that only the "true" bands and fans are allowed in is some elitist bullshit and is one of the things that annoys me most about the culture surrounding it.

Please show me where I'm being butthurt?

That's gentle?
Um... how is it not? lol

Yeahhhh pretty sure you're the one being upset here mate. Case in point:

Yup. That's definitely upset.

Edit: wait, I feel like I just got trolled. This was a parody post that was deliberately, ironically proving my point, right?

I think Stu is amazing. Jon just refuses to utilize him to his full potential.
IE has become the type of band since the Glorious Burden, where only half the album is great, and the other half is pure filler. If they waited 5 years between albums, they'd be amazing.
Also, Clear The Way is excellent. Jon should stick to war songs.

Clear the Way was good. I feel it's probably the best of the 4 singles they released.

Oh, hey. The genre discussion again.

Genres and subgenres are useful tools! Using them accurately is worthwhile when you're trying to describe bands. Correcting people in a discussion about music and genres is generally good, because it helps ensure that everyone's using the same language.

That said, calling people out when they're incorrect in a setting where being incorrect doesn't hurt anything accomplishes nothing. In most cases, you come off as someone who's trying to show how much more they know about something than everyone else and nobody's going to listen to you anyway.

There can definitely be cases when people are just plain wrong though: see people calling Mercyful Fate black metal.

Well I'm not going to bother to list the countless posts where you get upset at people getting a genre "wrong". You said you laughed at people getting upset at you calling something not metal, yet you tend to get upset when people call something metal that you think isn't or just stick their own genre onto something.

That ain't death metal. That's doom. Maybe doom/death sometimes but not really this song. You're right that they drastically changed, though (for the far, far worse).

Okay, no. I enjoy this Tristania album very much but it is not black metal. Not even a little bit close to it. :P

No! Death/thrash is correct though.

Dammit people stop calling everything black metal xD

I mean really..

I'm not upset. Like I said I hate SOAD as much as you do. Just seemed like funny irony.

It's a pointless argument to have.

I've said before that opinions often differ. We have quite different tastes in music it seems. There's lots of variety in this very thread. A lot of the bands you post I tend to think are shit. So it goes. I mean I think Chrono Cross had an incredible soundtrack too.

Moving on.

I don't think you understand what :P or xD mean if you think that's me getting upset/butthurt, but sure, "moving on" (after I made sure to call your tastes shit because I'm more mature than thou? lolz). ;)

In my experience even bands themselves aren't sure what sub-sub-sub-sub-genre of metal they "belong" to. Many don't even want to belong to a set genre label.

Metal is kinda ridiculous with this stuff...I can't blame anyone who's making fun of it.

The only time I really ever see arguments take place in general metal discussion is when people get upset that their childhood band that got them into music or metal in general is not considered metal both by consensus and label, often times by the band themselves. Then people have the audacity to stifle any further discussion with "Well you are just one of those people who think bands aint metal enough... elitist!"

It is all a big circle jerk. When is the last time you saw such fervent disagreement and pent up emotion when two blokes are discussion Brazilian thrash metal

Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation) is doing the VO for the "freakers" in Days Gone

He said 2 years ago that he was recording VO at Sony for a game that wouldn't be announced for a long time. Someone finally asked him today and he confirmed it

Thought it might've been Bloodborne since that was announced a few months after his original post but obviously too soon

That's pretty cool. Still prob won't buy it (at least at launch) but good for him. It will be interesting to hear it.

You guys got me into an Iced Earth mood. Checked out their latest two, which I hadn't really listened to. Serviceable albums, though kinda nothing new really. Then I listened to The Glorious Burden and started tapping my toes again. I've got a bit of nostalgia for this thing, even though when it came out I thought it was super fucking cheesy and only apprehensively kinda liked it then. It's still super fucking cheesy, but there are some rad ideas and tunes throughout. Especially the suite.

Stu Block has a great voice, though.

Mikael Akerfeldt and Devin Townsend want to make an album together

Throw in Steven Wilson and it could be the best thing ever.

Doubt it'll ever happen, and if it does I bet it'll be strange as hell and nothing we'd ever imagine as a combination of those two's music. Kinda like Storm Corrosion.

Which is fine by me I suppose. To me Akerfeldt and Townsend have earned the right to make whatever the hell they want and I'll support it, lol.

Cross-posting from that silly SOAD thread, but youtube just randomly recommended this to me, and... it's pretty damn good DM.

Blasphemer - s/t (2017)

Apparently it's a rather old band (circa 1990) that only ever released demos, changed name to something else and played death/doom, then reformed under the original name and finally released this full-length recently. Interesting, must be why it sounds so old school but with a more modern production. Anyway, good stuff!

Also, this is fucking great.

I will never understand why so many people are drawn to these discussions.

I don't ever really understand why so many people get mad when something is called 'not metal' as if that denotes some kind of stamp of approval. I mean, sure, SOAD sucks regardless of genre, but sub/genres exist for a reason.

Then again it's usually the people who think FFDP are the heaviest music on the planet that are the most annoyed by it.

more on topic, that new LOSS album is really in the running for my favorite metal album so far this year.

Funny thing is, the discussion could be totally peaceful if at least one side agrees that maybe there are metal elements or similar traits in the music of that childhood band. I mean, early (especially live) David Bowie music from the Ziggy era was hard and heavy in places and it really opened a door for me that ultimately led to metal. If anyone who doesn't know metal that much came to me and said "Kiss are awesome \m/ Metaallllll!" I could see where they're coming from even if I know better, haha.

Hyporcisy alert: I'll fight anyone who disagrees that Black Sabbath are metal, though. Those people exist. A line has to be drawn. :D
