Any gif with unnecessary captions. You don't need the caption.

Think about it this way - how much dumber would airplane.jpeg be if it had a huge caption at the bottom that said "on my way" or some shit

yeah. It's exactly as dumb as the majority of people on this earth who need their humor explained to them. It's the internet's version of comedy movies that have someone hit in the crotch immediately followed by characters going "OHHH!!"

Yeah but on the other hand:

It's not so much that the context from the movie is different than the intended reaction, it's more the fact that it has a somewhat negative connotation to it and people are using it positively. It's almost like it's being used for the opposite reason that it was meant for. This:

Actually it is misused. People post it to mean "oh ho, I'm so clever. I understood an obscure reference." In actual fact it means "I never understand pop culture references because I'm a cryogenically preserved super soldier from WWII, but I finally got one because the source material is so old".
Is not really comparable at all.

The guy just looks so overtly pissed off that it always seems "off" when people use it as something positive. Then again, my interpretation was off, so...

Ironically, the 'it's the Citizen Kane of' is almost always misused, Kane is famous for being a huge technical accomplishment and innovative, it's use of deep focus and theatrical stage direction to control viewer attention was very progressive, it also used false ceilings to hide microphones allowing for low angle photography which let them shot Welles from lower angles making him more imposing.

It is an incredible film, and everyone should see it, but the 'Citizen Kane of' isn't about it being very awesome, or the moment film was legitimized as an art form or anything of the like.

Ironically, this makes Crysis "the Citizen Kane of videogame." :(

or not another teen movie

both classics

i just jacked off in your french toast is right up there with rosebud

For the most part, black and white = terrible, exaggerated acting style. Acitng didn't start getting realistic and good until around the seventies.

Movies were more like theatre back then. It is fine in classics like Citizen Kane, Rashomon or Casablanca, but it really annoyed me in The Artist and other instances where they tried to reproduce that style.

I've not seen it either, but the face value appearance is of a very angry guy clapping.

It's not as big a deal for non-Americans.

Non American critics were the first ones to start reassessing the movie as a masterpiece.

He's applauding his trophy wife who is a horrible singer and appears to be the only one in the joint doing so. He put a shitload of money into this production for her to live her dream of singing and appears to be in denial of just how bad she is.

OP appears to misunderstand the applause as well which is pretty funny.

Obviously the applause GIF gets used out of context but it doesn't really matter. It's someone applauding intensely.

I'm not sure how blind he was to her actual performance, but he's definitely clapping intensely to compensate for the rest. Maybe the intention was for the rest would join in, but they don't really. It just ends up being a really awkward shilling scene where the performer bombed, and he as well for pretending to love it.

I personally am quite fond of seeing the GIF misused, as it's usually quite hilarious.

It's even worse when the captions don't line up with what the people in the gifs are saying.
