The most polished games you've played

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

Lots of different guard behaviors. Environment has lots of detail (they went to an actual oil rig to research for Big Shell). Tons of little details.

Probably Max Payne 3.

Never touched MP, so not sure about that, but the SP was just great. Game was super optimised as well and ran great.

That's a pretty good answer. Now if only, if only the game allowed you to skip cutscenes... It's the only thing dragging it down imo. I didn't replay it as much as I wanted because of those custcenes (I gave up on New York minute when repeating the same 2 minute custcene for the fifth time).

If only they could patch something in to do this. Playing Max Payne 3 on pc was a blast

How can MP3 be polished when it took 5 minutes to skip cutscenes?

Polish is not just graphics and detail. A truly polished game is the entire experience: Mechanics, animations, graphics, detail, framerate, loading fluidity, UI fluidity and readability, sound design + mixing, etc. etc. There are lots of great games (not that I think MP3 is one), but not all great games are totally polished. That's fine as long as it isn't broken, but that's not really what this thread should be rewarding.

Hm, maybe "polished" needs to be defined... But then, it's a matter of opinion.

I'll agree with Nintendo games, some AAA PC games on a high-end PC of course.

Some last gen games such as Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Umcharted 3, Guns of The Patriots, Portal, Rayman Origins and others make the cut. One game doesn't particularly stand out for me tbh.

Definitely GTA 5, considering the scale, the hardware and the attention to details.

LMAO at Mario 3D/Mario Kart mentions. Just because Nintendo is finally making games in HD does not mean they are most polished.

It seems like there is this thing in this thread where Polished equals Absolute Perfection.

Say, a game has 90 or 99% things working perfectly for it, but it has one or two flaws, and all of a sudden that game doesn't deserve the polished word anymore.

I think it's silly.

so you LMAO at MK and 3DL and then cite GTAV

LMAO indeed

Solitaire - Windows games edition.

I can even see my face in all that polish.

Ratchet & Clank are pretty polished. Same with Mario.

Nintendo games are usually very polished... some Gamecube era games like Mario Sunshine were uncharacteristically unpolished.

Blizard games are usually super polished.

For some games that I don't think have been mentioned yet, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Geometry Wars 2 come to mind.

The PS2 versions of Silent Hill 2 and 3. Pretty much the definition of polish. Especially 3. Played the games to death, and haven't run into a single graphical glitch or any other problems. Great art direction and insane attention to detail. Those HD collections though...

Also, the REmake. The remake we deserved. It's a shame survival horror games like this don't get made anymore.

I see Nintendo games coming up a lot here. I used to work for a company that is a supplier to Nintendo.

They are perfectionists, without a doubt. The only consumer electronics company that compares is Apple, and they are much bigger. Nintendo just really cares a lot about their brand equity, and they aren't going to piss it away to make a quarter's earnings numbers. It may finally be starting to pay off for them with the Wii U. People recognize the consistent quality they offer.

Like most people have said - recent Nintendo games. Mario 3D World plays perfectly, looks perfect, runs at a perfect framerate. Everything about that game is perfect.

Monster Hunter series. Never seen any bugs, glitches, fps issues, control issues, connectivity issues, progression issues, audio hiccups, game freezes, or any BS of any sort. Certainly the most polished experience I have ever had.

Considering the topic is "Most polished games you've played" we should be talking about the top of the top in terms of polish.

In my eyes, polish in a game begins with consistent performance (even during loading, ie no hitching), refined controls/mechanics and consistent high-quality audio/visual style. Everything from when the game boots up to when the user quits the game should have care and attention brought to it. The final aspect of polish, in my opinion, is to not let the user aware of any smoke and mirrors. For example, if you're going to stream textures and geometry in, try your hardest to make sure the user NEVER sees the pop. I usually don't include extremely difficult game breaking bugs, as most games can be broken given enough time. As long as the game doesn't break during "normal" play it's not really an issue.

Given that definition, these games would be near the top of my list:
F-Zero GX
Metroid Prime
Super Mario Galaxy 1-2
Super Mario 3D World
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Super Smash Bros Melee
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 2
Uncharted 2
Portal
Team Fortress 2
Starcraft 2
Arkham Asylum

I don't know how people can laugh at people saying GTAV and then mention simple ass games like fucking Mario Kart. Of course that's polished, there's nothing to it. (in comparison to GTA V). The fact that GTA V even ran on a PS360 as well as it did is a massive accomplishment, the game was polished to a T. Despite some frame drops during large shootouts, so what? that doesn't mean the game is not polished. Its arguably the most ambitious game ever made. Despite some minor technical flaws, its still super polished.

So my hypothesis whats happened here, is that game reviews have started putting 'polished' in on their list of meaningless buzzwords to describe why something is good (c.f. "visceral") so people have started using it as a synonym for good and are just listing games they like now.

Right?

Because any game you can go to youtube, type its name in and suffix with bugs and glitches and find over 300,000 results is intrinsically not fucking polished

Super Stardust HD.

A 1080p 60fps PS3 launch title. Still boggles my mind how hard Housemarque knocked it out of the park. And the online leaderboard never got hacked/glitched out... Part of the reason why it stayed so competitive for so long was that it was a game that you got progressively better and better at, with an extremely high skill ceiling.

Yet lots of companies make "simple ass games" that aren't nearly as polished as the Mario Kart games. No one is saying GTAV isn't an amazing game and accomplishment. Just because a game is ambitious and best in it's genre doesn't mean its incredibly polished by default.

Dat story is so bad.

Not polished. Many imperfections in plot, some gameplay woes, and overall design choices. But it's probably just me. Very good game, but far from polished.

Edit: Now, the DLC... that was gold. Again, not perfect, but the second Daud installment was so good.

Shadow of the Colossus. That game was just an amazing experience! Agro, the sad music, the giant colossi, that lonely atmosphere! One of the prettiest things I ever experienced on games.

Taking in consideration the OP description about "attention to details".

Good one so true.

Also, Trials HD. Tight controls, instant restarts, sharp responsive menus. Almost everything about that game is instant and simple.

Yeah I would not call this game polished.

However, it was incredibly fun and was well designed.
