As soon as hybrid was on the table again, everything made sense to me.
Also, hybrid is a more bold attempt to do what the Wii U did in Japan that is simultaneously more cautious. The thing can sell as a handheld and do nothing to bring the Japanese back to the TV, but in doing so the thing is still selling. Or through expanded off-TV capability, it could encourage Japanese consumers to game at the TV some of the time.
Nintendo is very concerned with providing a way forward for console gaming in Japan, or at least Iwata Nintendo was. NX is the product of Iwata Nintendo.
Hybrid just screams 'I make everything make sense!'
